In Genesaris, and indeed many other lands, there are planeswalkers who possess the ability to travel to other worlds or even entirely separate dimensions. Some of these men and women (and creatures) however do not possess this power as an innate ability, but rather use such devices as the Crossroads.
No one quite knows who built them. The Crossroads is not one place but many, located in scattered, random locations throughout Genesaris. Not all of them are easily accessible, nor have all of them been discovered. Some of them are inside intricate buildings; others are set outside. All of them are formed as giant gates of stone with elaborate runes carved into them, many of them resembling a long hallway. Entering one throws the person into a vortex of light, shunting him or her into another land. Those who have a precise idea of where they want to be, or at least a general concept, may find themselves very satisfied. Some find it fun to let the gate transport them to whatever it feels like, leading to some very interesting places of exit.
There is a main Crossroads station for use centered in the Midlands, guarded by privileged warriors whose job it is to ensure that the portals are not abused, as well as to dispatch any planeswalking beings who may endanger Genesaris, be they people or exotic creatures. Most of the time, citizens like to look at the magnificent gates rather than actually enter them. Adventurers like to step through, trusting that they will manage to return by using a gate on the other side.
If there is one.
