She awoke with a start as her small eyelids fluttered open in a panic. Had she somehow managed to fall asleep after everything? How could that be?
Thinking back, she recalled a horrid nightmare – an experience in which she imagined many times and always feared would come true – where her Mommy and Daddy had been snatched up by evil monsters in the night and Mommy had pushed her underneath her bed to hide. What a terrible dream that was, a terrible—
Dream…? Blinking the sleep from her eyes, Grace looked to either side of her and spotted something familiar but certainly out of place for a little girl who was supposed to be in her bed: wooden floors. A little confused, she stretched her short arms out in front of her and used the palms of her hands to pull herself out from under the bed to the point where she could stand. Once on her feet, she began looking around her bedroom for the one thing that could bring her comfort after a scary dream; her teddy.
It didn’t take long to catch a glimpse of Fuzzy, the little brown bear that Mommy and Daddy tucked her in with every night – he was strangely lying face down on the floor by her closet.
How did he get all the way over there?
After she gathered Fuzzy, Grace decided it was time to find Mommy and Daddy, and ask to sleep with them for the rest of night since her nightmare had her little heart racing. But the hallway to their bedroom was dark and she was scared to make the journey alone. Standing at the doorway to her bedroom, she called out for Mommy and Daddy… but there was no answer.
Keeping close to the wall to avoid any monsters that may or may not be straying around this time of night, Grace made it about halfway down the hallway before she discovered why the hall had been so dark: the lamp that usually sat on a table midway through the length of the hall was laying toppled over and broken on the floor. Grace wasn’t in a sleepy haze anymore…
So much for it being a dream. Mommy and Daddy had been stolen by the monsters that hunted the people for their special light; just like they had warned Grace about before. This time it hadn’t been a nightmare, and now she had to go outside like a brave little girl – just like Mommy and Daddy had explained to her many times if anything like this should ever happen – and find someone else who had the special light glow like she did.
It was hard, but Grace managed the dark and scary route downstairs from the bedrooms, down to the door, and outside. She wasn’t quite sure where to begin, so she just started walking and held fast to Fuzzy. If all else failed, Fuzzy would protect her – and maybe even know the way she needed to go. Squeezing the bear’s soft foot that she grasped in hand, she allowed the stuffed animal to dangle upside down as she began walking. She knew that she needed to stay out of sight from the monsters, but which ones were monsters and which ones weren’t? Mommy and Daddy even told her that some of the people with the special glow light were monsters, too.
When pale lavender eyes set upon two people; a man and a woman, walking a little bit from down the way, Grace approached them, and when she noticed their special light, she stopped. Holding Fuzzy out in their direction like a weapon, Grace pointed the bear accusingly at the pair and readied to launch her attack teddy at them should they turn out to be monsters. With her free hand, she pulled and tugged nervously at the middle of her white cloth nightgown.
“You both have the pretty light,” she addressed them, but narrowed her eyes at them in suspicion as she asked “But are you monsters?”
If so, Fuzzy was ready.
