I never got into the novels because I wasn't sure how well the series would translate into book form.

lol. FMP originally was novels. They were made into the Anime. I read the novels before TSR came out and totally spoiled myself to all of it before the first episode came out lol. The manga was purely spin off sort of things

I know they were originally novels. It's not a matter of which came first. Some series, for example, do better as anime. The original manga can't benefit from musical mood-setting or great animation sequences. One that comes to mind is Bleach - the fights make the series for me, and they lose too much in translation to the manga.

So I'm just not sure I want to chance finding out that the series doesn't stand without a lot of the things I love about it, such as its music, or the quality of the animation.
