::History::

Aki Takei, one of the most renown Miko under the protection of the head of the Fujiwara clan and Emperor Kammu, is assigned to travel to a shrine in the town of Kai and inspire hope in the townspeople once more. She is a priestess of the goddess Kannon, and is praised by many for the children and new mothers she has saved with Kannon’s healing powers. During her journey to Kai, she falls upon a group of bandits who immediately recognize her and offer to escort her to the town, to keep her safe and well-fed.

Their leader, Shinda (The man who makes other men dead) treats her as though nothing more than an eta (The filthy ones). He feared no curses, no spirits, no demons, and therefore had no fear of the priestess. Upon nightfall, he attacked Aki and threatened to rid her of her life lest she lies with him. Fearing for her life, Aki gave herself to him, and the next morning the bandits escorted her to Kai, not knowing what their leader had done.

She remained in the town with the villagers until she gave birth to a baby daughter. Amaterasu Takei. Aki loved the child, but hated who it reminded her of. Years passed and the face of Shinda still haunted her, the hatred becoming too much to bear. Aki cursed her child to feel nothing, so that she may never give in to the greed of man, then she sold her to a group of Chinese war advisors that had come to speak to Shigogure, the daimyo of Kai.

The three men loved the child instantly and took her back to China where she was put in the care of their many wives at the court of the Empress. Her name was changed to Qiaolian, and she was taught their language, and all the arts that came with being a lady under the Empress. But news of her skill and beauty traveled fast, and reached the ear of the Fujiwara daimyo, who even dared travel to the court of the Empress as to visit the child. At age 16, he purchased her back from the Empress and brought her to his own court to be a lady in his pavilion. But he did not permit her to have visitors.

The other women were to tended to the needs of the samurai lords serving the daimyo and the advisers, but she was to do no such thing. She was to sing and dance for them, and for the daimyo, and then retreat to her chambers and paint. The world knew of her, but knew not her face, or her life, or her story. Yet news traveled everywhere of the Utsukushisha (Lady of Beauty) that resided within the Fujiwara’s pavilion, with her crimson lips, curious probing eyes, and pale, snow-white flesh.
