Most often it is used to purify food and drink of disease or poison, but it is capable of generating short-lived magical barriers which, to a certain extent, protect against physical assault as well.

There will come times in this roleplay, no doubt, where your character will attempt to do something that is extraordinary (i.e. learning incredibly swiftly, or doing perfectly something that your character might not be able to do.)
