    Wolf and Deer

The wolf lived kindly with the deer
    Until that fateful day.
Set long ago between the two,
    Took place this dark foray.

The wolf was lean as winter trees
    He hunted and was feared.
His fangs were keen, his maw nothing
Down which no beast could have peered.
Now seasons passed, he was alone,
And Lived winters’ wrath in gloom.
He hunted – still sorrow approached
    Much like the coming doom.

Wolf drank the final broth of blood
    Spewed freshly from scarce prey.
When that was gone with winter storms
    He trudged along his way.
He traveled far amidst the storm
    And came upon the Deer.
She was meat, but beauty too.
    Wolf felt himself endeared.

For in her eyes Wolf saw a thing
That spoke of sadness like his own.
He endeavored then to put away
The hunger winter storms had sown.
“My dear,” said he, unto the doe,
“I assure you of no test.
Will you stay with me, friend not foe?”
    Unsure, Deer acquiesced.

The wolf promised with sincere eyes
    To ensure her safety well.
He sought for her the winter grass
    And together they did dwell.
    The winter drove them many days;
But Wolf shut away his thirst.
Deer was nervous, yet she stayed
    Through winter’s coldest curse.

    Among the winter’s cruelest winds
    The two grew ever close.
    Wolf and Deer, they stayed a pair;
    Great fondness they could boast.
But such things last not and so it was
    That Deer grew fearful, scared.
    Suppose the wolf’s hunger rose,
    Despite the times they shared?

Thus Deer planned to rid herself
Of Wolf, to save her life.
Though her thoughts were dark and sad
Fear cuts deeper than a knife.
A hunter then, would be her plan.
She would lead him on a chase.
When Wolf came dashing to the fray
    Wolf's life would be erased.

So Deer sought man as Wolf slept
And found man soon in snow.
    She showed herself, so carefully
    Trotting to and fro.
    Hunter saw her soon enough
    And began the dreaded chase.
A bullet missed and awoke the wolf
    Who soon the Hunter faced.

The wolf leaped, snarling, at the man
They fought fiercely for their lives.
When wolf tore Hunter’s throat away,
    Deer charged with fearful cries.
Wolf dodged the hooves of his friend
    Confused, bewildered still.
    Knowing that he’d been betrayed,
    He ran before she killed.

To this day Wolf’s heart burns
    With great, hot misery.
He’d grown so fond of his Deer
    And loved her savagely.
Now he hunts her with great rage,
With yellow eyes and fangs all bared,
And seeks an answer why she betrayed
When all he did was care.

The wolf lived kindly with the deer
    Until Wolf was betrayed.
Set long ago, between the two
    Took place their dark foray.

    Beloved of Stars

Hail, my darling, beloved of stars
What do you do when I am afar?
How do you sleep alone in our bed
The one we lay in the night we were wed?

What makes you cry, what makes you weep so?
Tell me, my love, I wish I could know.
I'll cease those tears, whatever it takes,
I'll stop the nightmares which keep you awake.

Come, my darling, fall into my arms.
I'll shelter you and guard you from harm.
No one shall have you, no one but me.
I love you forever, that you will see.

What is it then, what makes you so sad?
I have returned, so why aren’t you glad?
I came from afar, to witness your smile.
O, my Lord, it has been a while.

Kiss me, my darling, my beautiful wife.
I promise you a lifetime lacking of strife.
Why do you cry, what sheds these tears?
Confess to me, darling, allay all my fears.

Hello, my darling, beloved of stars,
What did you do when I was afar?
What is the shifting I saw in our bed,
The one we lay in the night we were wed?

Don't say to me our love was a lie
Not when I see you tremble and cry.
I love you forever, I know you love me.
It was this love that set our souls free.

I love you forever, O love of my life
Though my love for you pains me all night.
What did you do when I was afar?
Who did you name your beloved of stars?

    Flight

Betwixt a torn world split in twain so fine
Drawn in pain with dewdrop red lines,
Stares hard these eyes of solemn life threadbare.
The reaper's visage never before seemed so fair.
This image I see of tombs swept so clean
Placed quietly wherewithal all spirits flee
Somberly lends a secret place to quiet rest.
Tranquil from pain; though from life bereft,
Though hell is doubtful and heaven more so,
I have seen and will lend to the crows my spoiled soul.
No running, no fleeing; no fear haunts my mind.
I know no better end but this I now find.
And this fading of my soul's last light, final flight
Marks this sunset of a most gracious, bright life.

    Love of My Life

    Even when the mountains cry,
The rivers warm and then run dry,
When the stars chill and lastly die,
I will love you till the end of time.

Though the earth can shake and burst to flame,
And the air can split and part in twain,
    You can make my heart fall lame;
I will love you most gentle, tame.

When the world becomes coldest, rock
And all fortune will have me mocked,
When all my kin have run amok,
I will love you – my heart is locked.

When the doomsday clock strikes thirteen,
And humanity falls away at its seam,
When kindness becomes thin and lean,
I will love you, my life's true dream.

    When temples' sanctity are felled,
And heaven is fallen under hell,
My body reduced to a lifeless shell,
I will love you, strong and well.

When we age and lose our light,
When we no longer hold our sight,
And when we think of life as a blight,
Think of this, love of my life –

If you turn cruel and shock my heart,
Tear my soul and rip me apart,
And make my love taste sour, tart
Think of this, my singing lark.

Then the mountains can laugh through all of strife,
The rivers can dance and avoid the ice,
And the night the stars' lights can slice,
But you I won't love, love of my life.

Note: The answer is no, never.

    The Girl

She takes you up, spins you around
Lifts you high and throws you down.
Makes you shiver, makes you shake –
Heats you up until you bake.
    She's a girl you just can't take
    A girl you cannot make.
    Everyone who sees you
    Sees someone who is fake.
Those who see you as you are
    Driving quaking in your car
Those who see you in the night
Those who catch you in the light.
    Everyone who knew you
Wish they could fix you too.
    You don't remember anything
    Just last night's deadly fling.
No one knows you as you were
If you were better than before.
    One more year, another day
You've watched her take your life away.
    You don't work for anything,
Just this girl, the high she brings.
You love her true, this girl of sin
    You moan her name,
    Methamphetamine.

An old poem but one I thought turned out fairly well.

    Pass On

    Hark-to the angel's weeping,
Would you know how we all live? –
We walk the roads of the darkness gathering
Strewn with the blood of the endless age.
    Forever alone on the pavement
For all that was, and will never be again,
For all that was, and will never be again.

    Hark-to the angel’s weeping
Would you know how we all live?
The wars we fought were all unheeding
    To the angels’ dying calls.
So now we walk the lonely pavement
    Passing others not one glance.
And so our voices freeze in stillness,
What words once meant are now unheard.

We fight for the peace and sake of war
    Passing others not one glance.
The pen and sword do not agree
And the clock winds down and starts again.
The day grows dark and never comes
Hand in hand we walk alone.

Hark – to the angels’ weeping
Would you know how we all live?
The wars we fought were all unheeding
    To the angels’ dying calls.
So now we walk the lonely pavement
    Passing others not one glance
And so our voices freeze in stillness
What words once meant are now unheard.

Look your fellows in the eyes
And see – how they look away.
    Daily greetings remain in silence,
    Passing others not one glance.
Hand in hand we’ll walk alone
    This is our choice
    Locked in stone.

Speeches made to change the world
Though the pen and sword cannot agree
Strewn with the blood of the ages.
The years don’t heed the angels’ call.
    History weeps and time repeats;
The clock winds down and starts again.
Would you know how we all live?

The wars we fought were all unheeding
    To the angels’ fading calls.
Now our ears are closed again
    Blind and we cannot see.
We see and hear and do no evil
    Passing others not one glance.

    The end beckons once again
We do not know how it came
But for that was and never was,
We’ll walk alone and continue on.
Wars are fought and battles lost
    Passing others not one glance,
Strewn with the blood of the ages,
    Passing others not one glance.

    Sleep

I'll sing to you a gentle tune
And hold you in the night.
I'll protect you well, my precious love,
    Until the dawn breaks bright.

My love, you were my missing soul,
    A spirit in my heart.
Never leave but stand with me -
    Gods, let us never part.

My soul sings with a mighty voice
When you are at my side.
    You shine so radiant, my love;
For you I feel great pride.

A blissful state, my love, it is,
    To be only with you.
My devotion, it shall never fade
    But grow strong, staying true.

Sleep now, I will watch you doze,
As I sing to you this tune.
I love you true, I'll guard you well.
You need not wake too soon.

I've been wanting to write something like this for a while. I was inspired by the memory of a classmate's clever poem of a group warriors who went off and pretty much all died one by one (awesome as it was, don't ask me for it, I lost it and it was never published outside of the school writer's magazine.) Mine has only one warrior and an entirely different story and theme, which is how it should be.

    The Warrior

On a great day's most coldest Eve
Comes the night to stand bereaved.
The Warrior wakes, and thus he knows
His Death has come, and so he goes.

Witness, behold - he is not scared
    But has forever stood prepared.
He sensed the advent of this Eve.
He is not daunted, nor bereaved.

He knew he could lie safe, inert
Yet rose instead and all alert.
Heed he would Death's grave voice
For it was his life; it was his choice.

Dressing quick he glanced at glass
To see himself, what years had passed.
Though yet young, a warrior still.
He had learned to love as he learned to kill.

Stepping from his home he faced the storm
And walked dark fields and lands all torn.
He paced the paths of dire straits,
    Fearless of his final fate.

What was it that drove him unafraid,
To an end only his life could pay?
Perhaps it was war, a disease at his core.
This calling was nothing felt ever before.

He walked long and hard, with never a pause.
He walked as if driven by divine cause.
He walked the Eve and those who saw
Said he was unbound by life and law.

As the Warrior traversed the blackest roads
He thought of the stories told by crows.
Of carrion, death, and how the world turns
And war, and blood, and how the world burns.

    He lived a life he swore quite complete;
He bore little regrets and dreamed always deep.
He admitted his faults and unfinished claims,
But recalled his moments of fortune and fame.

He traveled the lands he once had seen
When he fought for people both heavy and lean.
He had been of those who had taken their land
And fought till his comrades spat curses and ran.

The Warrior relived wars won and lost
What they had taken, and what they had cost.
When the war had passed with him left alive
He felt redeemed then, and at home he arrived.

Yet in those years of peace lived without war
He felt something was missing; he lusted for more.
    Restless awake and dreaming bizarre,
It was only this feeling that had his life marred.

So now he walked far, this Warrior strong.
No one but him could say why or how long.
    He had no one, abandoned no values behind;
He kept only his weapons and unbroken pride.

He felt his Death coming, or waiting for sure.
It was no blessing anymore than a cure.
But it was not a curse, or strain of disease
Those thoughts had arisen, but long had they ceased.

What form would it take? How would it come?
A wound given by an enemy's daughter or son?
Perhaps a misfortune, an accident untold,
Or perhaps only age would cause him to fold.

The Warrior walked through the night lost in thought
Wondering of the Death he so firmly sought.
He was caught unawares when the sun at last rose -
The Eve was over, and before him, Death posed.

The Warrior drew his blade and stood firm.
Determined to carry this day through to term.
Undaunted still, he greeted Death with a smile
And Death rushed the Warrior's last mile.

So dawn came, the Warrior laid low,
Felled at last by a renegade's keen bow.
It was not told why he was chosen by such.
It never will be, for it matters not much.

The Warrior lived a life well and long
Riddled with foolery, miracles - troublesome songs.
At the call of his Eve he rose without fear
He had not shivered, nor shed any tears.

Only the gods know why the Warrior died
Even so the Warrior was left with his pride.
He had died instantly, left forever in peace.
Life was the Warrior's final, savory feast.

    Solitude Eve

    Tranquil beneath a blossoming tree
It happened on a solitude eve.
    When the flowers are birthed
    And the sparrows go forth
To return to the nests they had left.
    It sprang out of shadows
    And into the shade
It happened in such a rare way.
A man fell in love with a woman, they say,
So it was on a solitude eve.
He caught her deep gaze, a lonely dark man
    And found it serenely returned.
He was in love, it was clear to be seen
He was caught in a midnight-dark web.
    He thought and he dreamed
    Of grand plots; grander schemes
Of how to capture her love.
It eluded him until at last it came through
Like a song, enthralling and true.
He labored a year, working in tune
To the beats his heart made for her.
    He worked to the rhythm of the sweat on his brow;
Through it all, he thought only of her
Till at last it was done,
    His hard labor complete
He took it in hand and away.
He stood poised beneath her window and called.
She opened the glass and gazed down -
    How her eyes shone!
    With the colors of fall!
He took the grand gift and began
Singing the tale of how greatly he fell
The dark eve when he saw her so well.
    Captivated in love ,
    He sang high and loud
As he held his gift to the sky.
A majestic strung harp crafted of wood
    Oak and ash, mahogany red.
It played for him and his great, burning heart,
Strings burning alike in his hands
Still he played on to her ears.
He sang the tune of his heart.
When done, he offered his hand.
He waited for her to descend down the stairs.
    He waited with steadfast resolve
He waited with undying hope he possessed
    And yet, she never appeared.
And never would, since the song he had played
Only for her and his heart.
Some love, they say, is fated to be
And some is not, it is plain to be seen.
His gift was one carved from his heart
    Denied, no less, that eve.
And it was an eve, a solitude eve
Like the one he remembered so well.
A solitude eve when he fell and died
For a love he sang for so well.
