    Traps: A Comprehensive Study

A basic syllabus, written in black ink on inexpensive parchment, is delivered by courier to the students a week prior to the first meeting:

    Class: Traps: A Comprehensive Study.
    Professor: Edward Brown.
Students: Cage 37, Esben, Joseph, Luriah Macreez.
    Meeting: Tuesdays (11 AM – 4 PM) and Thursdays (5 PM – 9 PM).
Requirements: None. Tools and textbooks will be provided for each classroom period and collected at the end of the day. Students are explicitly disallowed to bring any note-taking material.
Meeting point: The Free Gate in the Student Dormitories.
Expectations: By the end of the class semester, students will be able to identify and neutralize class-9 traps, and will be able to create traps up to class-5. Students will cultivate their sense of forethought, hindsight, and ratiocination. Assignments will be scored on creativity, efficiency, speed, and style.

Once through the free-gate, the magical and pristine world of the academy was replaced by one of devastation and ruin. It looked like nothing on Terrenian soil. The architecture was all wrong and, to be blunt, a little off; one had to wonder how people could leave in the cold, square blocks with cold, square windows that looked like all the other blocks and windows around them.

Not to mention all of the chaos, rubble, and shattered foundations littering the scene.

They started beneath the water tower (near the top of the pic!). Edward had his feet over the edge, kicking them lazily, hands behind him and supporting his weight as he looked out over the city and kept his eyes on the rust-bucket car broken down on the road. He'd gotten here two hours earlier, and planned to never arrive early to this class ever again. Edward hating arriving early to functions; what a waste of time. But for this particular class, he needed to make sure he got here before any students did and got themselves killed.

Upon getting her instructions, she had started her morning off with a relatively large breakfast. She wasn't going to bring her satchel with her, which meant no snacks. In this case her common sense told her since they would be learning about traps, carrying food around was prolly not one of the best ideas there were. Todays choices were supposed to be for the better of herself in this class, in which she dressed more like a boy than her normal girl like nature allowed for.

The hair was pulled back from her face and placed in a neat tight bun at the back of her head, to keep it out of her way. A simple blue t-shirt, and khaki cargo pants were her adornment for the day. She didnt carry anything on her body except for those clothes as she headed from her dorm room down the hall to the Free Gate, so she could make it to class on time. And upon stepping into and out of the gate, her eyes would adjust and the next thing she would see would cause her heart to drop.

    What has happened here...?

It was like all the stories the people who worked for her mothers farm had told her. It was truly saddening to see it for herself, and an escapable shudder ran down her spine. She walked to where Edward was sitting stopping a foot off to the side of his right shoulder. The green eyes couldn't tear themselves from the disasterous scene below and around them. There was no smile on her face this morning.

    "Um...good morning Sir."

“We’ll, at least it’ll be interesting.” He muttered to himself, sliding his arm through the holes where the sleeves should have been. Tugging on the sides of it, pulling the collar tight around his neck, his fingers found the buttons along the front, sliding the bottom three into place. A hand gently clasped around the opposing wrist, rubbing the silver bracelet that rested there, confirming that he hadn’t lost it in the journey from his ‘home’ to the academy.

Not that he ever took the damn thing off. As the only keepsake he treasured, for him to remove it was rare and had only happened once or twice in the entire time it had been in his possession.

    It was, after-all, special.

Or so he had been told. His finger traced the intricate raven that had been etched inside of it so long ago, running across the edges that seemed far too smooth for any smith to have done. In fact, the entire etching seemed different than the rest of the bracelet. While the bracelet itself was a gleaming silver, the raven was a matte black that never seemed to shine, regardless of how bright a light was shone upon it’s surface. His eyes, and finger, lingered on it for a moment longer, before tearing away to scoop up the six hoops that rested on the dresser he had moved his meager belongings into. As he moved down the hallways, each of them found a place in the top of his ears, until all six had been fastened into place and his hands had found the pockets of his slacks. Being late was not something that worried him, apparently.

As he left the dormitory and came to the area where his class was being held, he couldn’t help but marvel at the destruction that had been caused. “What the hell happened here?” The fact that it was different than the rest of the land mattered little. No, as boys generally do, his attention was piqued by the wanton destruction, rubble and chaos that littered the streets he wandered through now. “I bet it was something like super-dinosaur-zombies.” He muttered, nodding along to his train of thought as he followed the streets like he knew where he was going.

It wouldn’t be long before he found his way to the water tower, and thus the two others that had gathered there. “Yo.” Two fingers extended, the gleaming rings on his index and middle finger sparkling for a second.

37 exited the Free Gate a mere thirty seconds behind Joey, clad in a loose sleeveless tunic and brown shorts with ragged bottoms. Bare feet were the order of the day, very rarely did he wear shoes; he couldn't feel with shoes on. The faintest of jingles rose from the metal cuffs adorning each wrist and ankle, as well as the collar situated around his neck.

A casual stride carried him out the gate, upon which he glanced above at the looming water tower -- somehow having survived whatever caused such widespread destruction in it's immediate surroundings. Sniffing at the air curiously, he trailed the group, pausing only to gape over the edge of the building at the scene beneath them.

So much stuff was broken! It looked like it'd been fun too; he wished he could've been there to break stuff too! So why not act on it now, right? Reaching down for a stone trapped under his foot, he hefted it, eyed a window in the upper floor of the shorter building across the street and hurled it, fully expecting to hear the crashing of shattered glass.

With that, the feral boy turned his gaze on the old guy he'd never seen, the girl he'd never seen and the boy he remembered very well. "Hi."

Though much chaos and ruin reigned, directly around Edward, order gently bled back into the scene. None of it magical, mind you. One could tell by the brush strokes on the ground that Edward had merely swept his hand across the ground to clear a sitting spot. The rocks near him, arranged into a neat pile though its proper constituents were of all shape and size, were born from nothing eldritch or arcane. He'd just gathered the rocks into a pile, that's all.

Luriah entered the scene and she'd see Edward reach to the pile of rocks to his right hand and chuck it into the water. It took a wild curve to one side, hooked as if pushed or pulled in that direction, and angled back into the water. Bubbles escaped the water's surface as the rock dug in deep and fast. Edward picked up another rock and did it again.

"Morning Luriah. Sleep well? Eat any breakfast? It's good for you but I can't stomach a thing in the morning. Makes me feel sick to my stomach."

One of the boys entered the class. The one Edward recognized as Joey.

"Good question Joey. A giant mouse trap sprung. That's what happened here. Nothing as cool as all that nonsense you went on about."

A third child entered the class.

"37. Hi. Come, get closer. If you'd all like, pick up a rock and chuck it, but make sure to only chuck it in the lake."

He didn't need them to introduce themselves because he already knew who they were. Edward tracked each child since the moment the signed up for his class.

"It took me five and a half months to set it up, the trap I mean. A lot of math, I'll tell you that right now, but traps are usually more instinct and intuition. This was just something a little more intricate. Five and a half months, but I killed ten thousand men in one day. Something to aspire to I guess."

Edward picked up a rock and tucked it into his palm, rubbing his thumb against the smooth, flat bottom.

"In the order you came in. Luriah, Joey, and 37. Why did you take this class?"

Small hands had tucked into the pockets of her pants as she stood there. Silence was simple and easy to isten to. Then when Edward spoke she turned her head to look down to where he was sitting.

"Yes Sir, I did." That was the answer to his questions, and when Joey and then 37 showed up she recognized them from a few days or a week prior to class, when she had followed Donovan and friends to a cave entrance. The way the two of them interacted was quite memorable, and not too good in her mind.

"Hey ya'll." There would be an exchange of glances then she would take her left hand out from the pocket and move over to pick up a rock, with the intent of throwing it into the lake. Green eyes would watch as it slipped through the air and hit the surface of the water with a small spash and a circle of ripples.

"I took this class, to learn how not only to keep myself out of harms way, but my family as well. I guess a better understanding of traps while travelling is a good thing to know. And eventually to make then to not be followed would be a good way to keep people from harming you, or give you a chance to get away."

They were relatively simple ideas, and she had no intent on killing people, as Edward had stated he had done. It unsettled her to a small degree, but her eyes remained on the surface of the water, the ripples growing and eventually fading from the center outwards.

The youngster’s attention turned as the voice behind him startled him some. Those dull green eyes narrowed and he felt his hand clench at the sight of the wild boy. Words started to leave his lips, perhaps an insult or a threat to the one that had attacked him not long ago.

Perhaps it was for the best that the instructor spoke before the words could come out. The boy’s posture suddenly relaxed and his gaze turned to glance at the man sitting. He declined the offer to throw a rock, letting his hands rest in his pockets for the time being, toying with some of the change that was held inside them.

“Lack of anything better to do.” He answered truthfully, offering a shrug to go along with it. Class had never been his strong point. Math, science, history… it all bored him to no end. In his previous school, when he had actually attended, class was only used as a time to catch up on sleep - sleep that had been lost during the night hours due to his ‘extracurricular activities. “It seemed like it would be more interesting than most of the other classes, anyway.” An add-on to his prior statement, though in truth, he had taken it just to fill the slot and it seemed like an easy grade.

How hard could it be to set a trap for someone anyway?

At first, 37's lip curled slightly at the invitation to come closer. No thanks. I stay over here, he thought to himself. In the meantime, his eyes wandered over Luriah -- he vaguely remembered her from the meeting of several students a few days ago -- and then to Joey a more memorable figure. Already, they'd clashed, and now here they were, in a class together? Did this foretell trouble? I'll time will never tell! Or...would it? Yeah, it would. In fact, even as their eyes met briefly, 37's wolfish glare greeted Joey; was there an unspoken challenge there?

Anyway, at Edward's words, 37 blinked, looking out over the scene of destruction, then back to Edward Brown. With just that, the mousy man changed in his eyes. Any man capable of doing all that with a trap must not be all bad!

Never one to mask his emotions much, 37 stepped closer now afterall, the interest on his face in spades. "I want do like that. Like what you say. With this." A small arm flung forward with a sweeping inclusion of the entire world it seemed, but obviously a reflection of Edward's words. "I take this class because..." He paused, only to properly arrange his words. Since the changes occurred to his rewired brain, language and speech came to him much easier now, but he was still learning. At moments, it showed. Like now. "...because...I like being out. Out in wild...in nature. So I make traps sometimes. Have got caught some few times. Uuuuuh..." It was probably the most he'd spoken to a single person since arriving at the academy. "But...I want do what you did now!"

"Alright, so what do we got here." Despite the form of sentence being that of a question, Edward's tone did not lilt in that inquisitive fashion. It wasn't a question after all, but a simple statement of fact.

To Luriah. "Self defense. An expected reason. We all have the instinct for self-preservation after all, even at so young an age and detached from the world at large as you Luriah. It's great variability is one of the things that I like the most about the mastery of trapping. On the one hand, you can take a life viciously. Best example is treasure traps. The ones they have around gold and shit. But on the other hand, you can incapacitate or imprison. Pitfalls, nets, or cages are good examples of this. So are some other ones you'll all be learning about soon."

To Joey. " Double-edged sword boy, watch how you walk that edge. Boredom, eh? Boredom can lead to curiosity, curiosity to creativity, creativity to talent and greatness and genius. Or boredom can lead to apathy. Indifference. Psychopathic personalities are deeply rooted in boredom. Boredom's probably the reason you steal and throw rocks at shit. Probably the reason you don't have very many friends. I'm telling you, better watch how you walk its edge 'cause I know I'll be watching real close. Especially after this class."

To 37. "Ah. And we come back full circle to self-preservation." Edward paused and looked at 37. "That means that you want to live. See, the preserve part means that you want to keep something around or in good condition. The self part means you. Yourself. Anyway. You want to learn how to trap so you can get out of them. You don't want to learn how to constrain; you want to learn how to undo. Freedom, to be free, that's a big thing with you. You and I got at least that much in common."

This time around, he picked up five rocks at once, horded them in his folded arm and dropped them in his lap. He chucked one into the water, let the breeze whistle through the trees and broken windows, and chucked another one in.

"See that metal thing down there? That's called a 'car'. Inside of it, where the door opens, there's a little compartment called the 'glove box'. Inside of that is a small lock box. That's your assignment. Whoever brings it to me gets an A automatically. The others will be judged on performance.

"So go down there, get it, come back up. No time limit, you can take breaks and come back up here. I have food and supplies for you if you get hungry. And, of course, the way is trapped. Word of advice? Use your senses and think things through."

Self defense. It felt appropriate. She wanted to live, so self preservation. At some point during Edwards choice of words, she realized that eventually she may have to kill someone. It would come down to a decision of survival versus death. It made her skin crawl.

In turn she would look at Joey, then 37 as they were given a short 'What have we got here' from Edward. Joey seemed to need direction and 37 hit closely to the nail head. It was interesting as she watched the two boys reactions and looks towards one another, and at the same time keep her eye averted from them to the scene below.

As instructer she looked down at this 'car' thing. It was quite interesting. She'd never seen one up close before, and this may or may not be here chance at doing so.n When they were given their instructions, she stood there momentarily as to gain a good idea of what her surroundings were, and what path she would decide to take. There were stairs down to the lower stories on the right side of the building and some sort of pipe going down the wall just below them to the left. Choices were choices. And someone could or most likely would get hurt.

"Go to the car..." She'd whisper it to herself, placing the mission at the middle of her mind, and the scene ahead of her at the front.

She leaned over and took a few rocks in each hand and stuck them into her pockets, before making her choice. She was going to go down the pipe. So she stepped off the edge and walked behind the small group to begin climbing down the pipe on the wall to their left.

Fear was always a free agent, and she would remember her sister this way. 'Just remember, don't look down unless you know you are closer to the ground Luriah.' And she wouldn't. One hand would go under the other, her knuckles white from the tight grip she was giving the rusted pipe. She kept her weight and body as close to the wall as possible, not letting her nerves get the best of her, she finally looked down, then quickly climbed the rest of the way to the rooftop below the rest of the group.

Because her hands were shaking so badly, they slid into her pockets. There was an obvious choice in the stair to the right of her, but a huge bush of some sort was growing from the roof where she would be able to get to them. Somepeople would try to go through the bush. 'Well things that are obvious can be dangerous, but then again, when you try to avoid the obvious thing thats infront of you and go around, that could be the most dangerous.' She would blink a few times, letting her sisters voice drift out of her mind. She knew what she would do next, she just needed a moment to calm down.

Just great. More weird words. Having yet to master Common, the last thing 37 needed was more unnecessary words complicating his life.

"Huuuuuh..." Scraggly hair wavered with his motions as he jogged closer to the edge, looking over the side and seeking the aforementioned target. Oh, and the way down. Where was the easy way? The stairs? ...wrong. Everybody knows the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Everybody also knows the only logical way to get down, was to go down -- maybe over the side of the 10-story building? Yep.

    "K I go now." Leap.

If he got to do stuff like this, which he did on a daily basis, in this class all the time? It was gonna be a marvelous time in good 'ole Mr Brown's class. "Hehe!" Chuckling with happiness, after freefalling the very first story, both his hands shot out, latching onto the brick wall while his feet kicked back. Skidding down several feet, he lunged off the wall, tossing himself through the air to land catlike on the side of the fire escape. Somersaulting back, his little body rotated in the air as he flipped down to the next landing. 8 more stories to go!

Wait a sec, what was that mr teacher man said about using your senses? Was that like...smelling and stuff? Yeah, probably. He started by sniffing his own armpit. Smelt fresh? Check. Now, other stuff. With the sharp eye of the hunter, he sat there on the fire escape (crouched on all fours) to make sure it was safe before carrying on.

Luriah made it to the roof a level down without incident, although a few times throughout her descent it did seem as if the pipe, too rusted and wore-down, threatened to break and sent her spiraling down against the ground. But it didn’t.

37 had seemed to have a similar idea as the girl, but was more risqué and dynamic with his path. It would certainly get him to the car faster, but would it get him there safer? Probably not. Speed tended to blur the lines and blinded one to what was right in front of them. Speed, more often than not, meant trusting your environment and throwing caution to the wind.

Not a bright thing to do in this class but, then again, 37 and the girl had a lot to learn. Unfortunately, it would be at 37's expense. The support beams for the fire escape had been filed through at an angle. 37's initial landing on the fire escape jarred and weakened the holds. His second leap down proved too much to bear and the supports snapped. The hole fire escape began to collapse in on itself and ripped from the wall, rushing to the ground with the dissonant sound of crunching and grinding metal.

Her resolve was pretty good. There was still a breathing exercise taking place as her next moves were being carefully planned and mapped out in her head. AThe decent on the rusted old pipe was scary, she would admit that with no problem, and the feeling that it was going to get worse caused a knot.
That knot made her stomach quake, sending vibrations thoughout the rest of her body. fear was inevitable, as confidence began to drain slowly away.

Am I crazy for doing this?

The she heard the creak and groan of metal come from her left.

    Someone used the stairs?

There was a moment of shock and she almost skirted over to investigate, but unfortunately her feet were planted and her body was frozen to the spot in which she stood. There was a large splash as metal crashed into water.

It wasn't a good thought process but she made her way to the edge of the rooftop, it was time to be a little bit reckless. She slid over the edge and hung there with her fingers slowly sliding off the smooth stone. She would land with two flat feet, onto the metal of the staircase, then quickly leap up onto the thin metal railing to grab onto the stone window ledge to the left of it.

Like a monkey she once again hung there, allowing her feet to kick at the glass that was left in the window, attempting to touch her tip toes on the bottom ledge. Window climbing it could be called. Four more stories until solid ground, hopefully solid ground, would be underfoot.

A departure, simple and abruptly, perhaps the student had fallen ill in the change of environment? Perhaps, the origin for his departure wasn’t addressed to Esben however, he was merely handed a parchment and told where to go, and the rest was a jumbled mess— almost quite literally.

It was almost to his disadvantage did the gateway tear and hurl him, hurled in part due to the sprint of his (one he seemed to use no matter the class so far, always rushing, almost always late) and the force of the sudden hurl forward into the unknown. Concrete cleaning sliced through his uniform, the pain was nagging but largely fleeting, pushing himself up he would take a moment to take in the scene, his gaze twisting about the unfamiliar architecture.

It was with a sense of confusion, the youth, largely unsure of both his footing and bearing did he trek across the roof towards the water tower, a fixture unfamiliar. It was in the background for the city, the abstract and mundane ruinous skyscrapers did he hear the voices, students perhaps like himself? Out of sight it would make sense as he arrived so late, the student who he replaced had merely handed the parchment and placement was new to Esben.

“Hello?” Not quite bellow, but far above a whisper, Esben was without a doubt both lost and confused.

    "Esben."

Edward looked over his shoulder at the boy, motioned at the dwindling pile of rocks beside him and patted the ground not too far off.

"Not to sit, just come closer so we can talk. We have a few things to go over before I send you out on your assignment, and you'll want to pay attention too, otherwise your classmates are going to beat you to it."

He picked up one of baker's dozen or so that remained and chucked it into the lake; this one zig-zagged as if bouncing off of invisible walls before plopping solemnly into the depths of the lake. Edward watch its lazy, drifting fall from grace from afar as long as he could. Before long, the murky depths swallowed it.

"Esben, why did you take this class?"
