After observing everyone for quite a while, Theo got the gist of what he was supposed to do now. To be honest, he didn't know what to do right after he was teleported here. Yes, he was given a task to mine crystals, but he didn't if there was any proper way of mining  it. He was afraid that the crystal might lessen in quality because of his inexperience. As it turns out, at least from what he has observed from the others, all he needed to was just mine the crystals out. They didn't look too worried about the quality of the crystals, unlike him who hesitates if something was unclear to him.
Of course, there was the added function of the bag where it spits out crystals that weren't required. After testing it out with some random crystals he mined in the near vicinity, he saw a crystal flew in the air as it exited the bag. This would make work a lot easier.
    ...
"I don't think fighting it would be such a good idea..."

Theo observed from a good distance on what was happening currently. A small fire chick trying to fend off intruders from snatching it's source of food. At least, that was his point of view.

"Hey, cut it out. We've already trespassed it's territory unknowingly and now you're trying to make it worse?" Theodore tried reasoning things out before things got out of hand. As he had lived his life in a praerie, he was quite experienced when it came to animals and knowing how to respect them. Of course, there were those wild and rabid ones such as the Fire Rat he had encountered back at the tavern which was starting to be a pest but those types of wild animals are different than the actual wild ones.

"We should just focus on the task given to us and not get side-tracked with a problem that's unrelated to us." Theodore felt the intensity of the flames from the little bird and immediately judged that it was far more deadlier than the Fire Rats he encountered.

Mining rocks? Doesn't sound that bad?
That was the last thing Theo thought before being whisked away by some teleportation magic. He was quite curious how those small crystals had enough energy to manipulate space so much that it could teleport them to an entirely new section of the continent. Before he knew, white light had engulfed him and felt his body getting lighter and lighter. He had closed his eyes and hoped that everything would be okay in the end.
    ...
Two blobs of white light appeared in front of the Tree of Life. Then, these lights grew and grew before them formed to two human shapes. One of those lights was Theodore, and materialized right in front of the tree with his other companion.
Opening his eyes, he immediately checked his surroundings and only gazed in awe on how beautiful this place looked. Vibrant green plants that radiated life, the beautiful scenery of islands varying in different sizes jutting out of the sea of clouds. In the past, Theodore couldn't himself arriving in such a place. How could he? He was but a commoner who lived a normal life in a praerie in Elendaron. At most, he would dream of entering one of those big cities with buildings that towered very high as if they were reaching for the skies.
Now, there he was, standing in a rock above the skies with a majestic tree behind him which would put the high-rise buildings in those major cities to shame.

Looking at the receding back of Gryn who made his way back to his station, Theodore couldn't help but look at his reward. A special brew that makes you strong? This was a first for the inexperienced Theo. Although he himself was a mere Novice in his skills as a Potion Engineer, he still had some knowledge on a few herbs that had the effects of regaining lost stamina and invigorating the body with a refreshing energy. Of course, he only knew and haven't tried one yet. As far as he knew, he had only managed to concoct a [Lesser Healing Potion] and that was only made after a dozen of failures.
Looking at the wine bottle in his hand, he had already recognized it as some sort of treasure. With only 10 swigs left 'til it's empty, it was wise for Theodore to save it in case of emergencies. After all, he was already given an additional reward of free food in the tavern provided that he was only restricted to cheap meals, but at least it was better than nothing.
Taking out his own waterskin from his pack strapped to his belt, he emptied what little water it had within and carefully replaced it with special wine. When he poured the liquid to the waterskin, the strong smell of the wine entered Theo's nose and slightly flinched, convincing him more of how potent this concoction was.
Feeling his waterskin gain weight and seeing the last drop of the special brew entering his waterskin, Theodore nodded in a sense of accomplishment.
This was his first job, and even though the task was very difficult, he endured it till the end and was rewarded generously. He was proud of himself, and hoped that his parents were proud of him as well as they looked over him from the Heavens above.
With that finished, Theodore finally entered the tavern feeling better than before.
"Hmm... calling this thing special brew is kind of a waste. Let's call it [Tonic of Vigor]."

Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you.
It was understandable for Theodore's blunder from before, and it was within reason. It was his first time to be in actual combat, and with a feral monster such as a fire rat at that. He had never been taught how to properly fight and was just self-taught in the ways of using a staff. He could defend himself from wild animals, but against a monster or someone with experience in fighting, he would definitely be at a disadvantage.
But now, after that whole scuffle with the previous fire rat, Theodore couldn't afford to be careless against these rodents. Considering that their backs were lit up, Theodore didn't really need the torch at the moment. He can finally focus on attacking with his staff. Setting the torch on the ground, Theodore drew the staff from his back. Twirling it around to gain momentum, Theodore directed his staff towards the one nearest to him. Maneuvering his staff around, he smacked downwards at the fire rat, aiming at it's head. Successfully using 'Smash' on it, the rat's head caved in from the immense force carried by the staff's momentum and died immediately.
As if it wasn't fazed by it's brethren's deaths, the last Fire Rat pounced at Theodore right after the other's head was smashed. But Theo wouldn't give it a chance to bite him. A good thing about staves is that after you attack, you can easily follow up with another attack with the other half, especially when you're in a situation where you are being surrounded by multiple enemies.
Seeing that rat pounce at him, Theodore maneuvered the other half of his staff to smack the rat who was mid air. The fire rat's attempt was failed and sailed through the air until it fell on the ground. The smack wasn't strong enough to kill it, but it was enough to disrupt it's attack though. Shaking off the attack it received, the fire rat once more stood up and the flames on it's back grew even wilder but it's gaze was met by a thin wooden pole descending upon it.
    Splat.
The sound of it's head being smashed reverberated in the dark wine cellar as the last of the attacking fire rats was finally dealt with.
Taking a step back, Theodore withdrew his staff. He was heavily panting as he had given it his all in the fight. He didn't fully recover his stamina after the fight with the previous fire rat who had injured him before two rats suddenly appearing from the dark and launching themselves at Theodore. It would be a lie to say that Theodore wouldn't be exhausted after all that.
The basement once more returned quiet after the commotion, and no more sounds of tiny rat feet skittering against the concrete floor could be heard around him. Theodore wished these three were the only fire rats in this damned wine cellar because he was really tired. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, Theodore noticed something.
He turned around to see light in the distance.
Another entrance? Theodore wondered as he guessed what that source of light was. Curious to know what it was, Theodore grabbed the torch from the side, and walked towards it.

The rodent looked lifeless as it hung on his arm, it's grip no more but it bit in so deep that it's mouth was still clamped on his wrist. Seeing that there was no more reaction from the flaming rat, Theodore pried open it's mouth and the body fell on the floor lifelessly.
Blood gushed out from the wound, and he could feel the searing pain of his forearm as he discovered that he eventually got burned during the scuffle. The pain was unbearable, but if he didn't treat to his wounds, he would lose an arm. Sitting down on the ground, Theodore tried calming down his mind amidst the pain he was suffering. He thought the only healing spell that he knew way back when he was a kid. He focused on the incantation for the spell, and sure enough, a white glow surrounded Theo's free and undamaged hand.
"Bright light, shining light, heal my pain with all thy might." He brought his glowing hand which was filled with light magic, and hovered it over his burnt and bloody forearm, "Cure".
After he said that, the white glow from his hand slowly enveloped Theo's damaged forearm and if one would look closely the bite wound from the rodent before was now starting to heal itself in a rapid pace. The superficial burn on his arm also started to subside as his skin slowly turned back to it's original state. The pain was still there which was deeply burnt in Theo's mind, but at least his wounds were now tended and healed.
He endured through the pain and grabbed the torch, which was still lit surprisingly,  that he had dropped when he was bitten on his arm. Now, Theodore was given the proper opportunity to closely examine what the rodent was.

Kilnareth reacted to supernal in Terrenus Laws of Magic
    Introduction
In the ten or so years administrating Terrenus, this is my first public attempt at a cohesive, semi-organized "system" of magic. The first private attempt was in 2013, which was a lot less organized but discussion between desolate, lastlight, and Off Topic (among others) prompted me down certain paths of thought. It's pretty bare right now but I think there's enough here to work with and try out. In the future I'm hoping for something immersive and engaging to which this will be an index or an appendix.
So long as it adheres to the Mild Powers ruleset, Terrenus is agnostic as far as metaphysical systems are concerned. This means that members can feel free to adopt or adapt whatever system lends itself to their creative expression. That said, the below is the official system of Terrenus magic. It is recognized as the mainstream cosmological view of the world in Terrenus.
Keep in mind that like any field of study, the laws presented below are subject to improvement and modification as new information is found. Science is not math, meaning that scientific knowledge, even or especially about magic, is tentative and provisional, with nothing being final, and the accepted explanation being "the best among all available alternatives". To say this is subject to change for reasons in-character and out is an understatement.
Update - a number of the laws were accepted as the universal standard by all the board leaders. Those are in green. The stuff in black applies only to Terrenus.
    Laws and Theorems of Magic
A law is the description of an observed phenomenon. A theory is the explanation of that phenomenon. A law tells us that something is, not why it is - a theory attempts to explain it. Below are the laws of magic as they are currently understood in Terrenus.
Law of Origin (genius loci): All magic comes from the Spirit Realm and is regulated by various layers of genius loci.
Law of Chaos: Even with proper observance of the Laws, magic is chaotic and dangerous. Spells can go awry. Spell Permanency is a new and specialized field that can only guarantee longevity to within an acceptable margin. The longer a spell goes on the higher the chance it will go awry.
Law of Method: Methods for manipulation of magic so far include written words and symbols (including glyphs and runic formulas), spoken words and rhymes, color theory, music theory, hand symbols and gestures, esoteric components, and direct energy manipulation. These are all considered means by which a caster can negotiate arcane intent with a genius loci.
Law of Equivalent Exchange: All magic carries comes with a cost. This is usually seen as the consumption of material spell components but can also be seen as physical damage (bruises, cuts, disfigurement, etc), intangibles (sanity, memories, emotions, and in particular secrets), accelerated aging, and in extreme cases even death. Casting magic in a group mitigates this effect.
Law of Arcane Inertia: With rare exception, spells that are cast will remain cast as long as the Loci supports their existence. A fireball will burn out with lack of fuel but will not randomly disappear. A curse will remain until its neutralized (or its respective energy source runs out). Contrast against Law of Chaos.
Law of Parallel Symbolism: "Like produces like" or "an effect resembles its cause". It is easier to produce a fire effect from a spell focus related to the base element (coal, a phoenix feather, etc) than an unrelated or neutral component (earth) or diametrically opposed component (water or ice).
Law of Contagion: Objects in contact become entangled and the contact persists over distance but attenuates with time. This law is commonly applied in voodoo, allowing a magician to perform spells on an item and produce an effect on a person or place. Contagion is affected by tangible variables like how many people contacted the item, for how long, and whether the item is part of the target (hair, skin, blood provide a stronger link than clothing). Intangible factors like sentimental attachment and emotional trauma are also a factor. Contagion links can also be semantic or metaphorical.
Theorem of Many Worlds: Both the Real World and the Spirit World are infinite in nature, and in an infinite universe all things that can be eventually come to pass. TMW theorists posit that all instances of different worlds, dimensions, realities, and planes are either spatial distortions that link disparate parts of the infinite universe, or spiritual nexus that join parts of the physical world with parts of the irrational spiritual world.
    General Principles and Terms
Arcanosphere - Like the magnetosphere and the stratosphere, the arcanosphere is a planet-wide atmospheric phenomenon that accounts for concentrations of magical influence and force (or lack thereof), and the ease with which magical forces can be accessed, harnessed and manipulated. There is a known heavy concentration over Shawnee Glacier and a known thinning over Dead Peaks. After the events in Blairville, however, the Arcanosphere concentration has shifted. The Shawnee loci has overtaken the Wasteland loci, resulting in much of the desert being frozen, and magical availability in general has lowered everywhere except in Shawnee, where it has risen.
Epicoramine - Abbreviated as EPC, epicoramine is the only known arcane neurotransmitter in existence. EPC is a monoamine transmitter with excitatory properties. It can be found in minerals and foods that have been irradiated with, or subjected to, prolonged exposure to arcane energies. The presence of this mineral transmitter in food and water has led to magic-based mutations in various species, most notably in, but not limited to, humanoids and hominids.
Genius Loci - During the reign of Levas, the 'genius locus' was defined as 'the protective spirit inhabiting a plane'. The post-Zengi age, during the Oligarchic reign, sees the genius loci understood as the basic foundation from which an area's magical rules spring, thus defining the basic means of arcane operation. Genius Loci can "onion", meaning one can exist within another and alter the rules inside of a localized area. This explains why ritual magic works better in Blairville, magitech is more functional in Hell's Gate, and neither are fully functional in the Dead Peaks. The influence is uniform from core to edge rather than attenuating at the periphery. It is not uncommon to come across references to the loci in ancient texts as "the gods of magic"
Spirit Realm - Terrenus cosmology posits only two planes of existence or realities. The "Real"/Material/Physical world and the Spirit/Other world. The Spirit world is one of infinite complexity and scope (in Gaianism this is thanks in large part to the augmented Wyld presence here) so it contains the various other "settings" that most people interpret as being alternate realities. For instance, those that physically visit "hell" dimension(s) are visiting pockets of the Spirit World as are those that visit various "heaven" dimensions, and so on.
Tripolar Synapse Junction - The TSJ is a cluster of specialized tripolar neurons located near the base of the pons, bordering the medulla oblongata and spreading both into the midbrain and the brainstem. The TSJ is unique in that it is a source of the EPC neurotransmitter and belongs strictly to mutated species capable of innately manipulating magical energies. Species with the TSJ mutation account for less than 5% of the national population. A TSJ is not required for knowledge-based magic, which accounts for a majority of the world's magicians. Disclaimer: 'Innate' ability does not mean 'superior'. This is just my personal attempt at exploring the 'sorcerer vs wizard' angle.

    Disciplines
Enchantment - Enchantments are rituals which allow magicians to either create items capable of magic, such as rods or staves, or to impress a magical spell-effect onto a mundane item, such as arcane pendants and charms.
The amount and power of an enchantment is usually a function of its size, in that there is only so much magic which can fit onto a physical medium. This means that larger items are stronger than smaller items so, for example, staves are more powerful than rods. This does not account for exacerbating factors such as additional spell components and foci. Enchantments can also only be applied to objects individually, meaning it is more costly to enchant a large number of small things than a small number of large items. For this reason enchanted ammunition is expensive and rare. There is no perfect efficiency of enchantment as it pivots on many variables, such as type, quality, size and structure of the material as well as complications introduced by other laws of magic, such as if the item has been enchanted before Due to the diminishing returns of spell permanency, enchantments require maintenance; if left unattended an enchantment can wear off or, worse, become unstable Artifacts are non sequiturs and so may violate one or more of these tenets Divination - Divination are attempts to gain insight into a question or situation by way of spell process or ritual. Methods of divination are many, ranging from interpreting dreams to tea leaves to clouds to dreams, with the common thread between all methods being: that there are symbols, that these symbols carry information, and that these symbols require interpretation.
Magic can be detected within line of sight. Detecting magic through physical barriers requires time and ritual. Detecting magic is limited to confirming its presence and category Psychometry (psychic history of objects) is limited to general areas. They can become more specific based on familiarity and whether the caster has access to a contagion link, a similar or related object, or a piece of the object or person in question. Retrocognition (divine replay of past events) is limited to reading vague details about the past with the object, creature or person in hand or close, and with the understanding that the caster's interpretation of events may be wrong. The closer to the present time, the more accurate the spells can be The ambient and abundant nature of magic on Valucre can lead to false positives and false negatives

Seeing the bartender's back disappearing around the corner, Theo then decided to focus the job at hand. His own well being was at stake here so he has to take it seriously. Looking at the things the man gave him, he immediately went to work. Using the firestarter that was given to him, Theo lit up the torch and brandished it down towards the basement. The torch didn't really give up that much light, around a few feet of vision and even then it was still unclear.
"It's just rats, right? How hard can they be." With this in mind, Theo managed to gain confidence in himself and trekked downwards to the basement. But there was a question at the back of his mind though, which really puzzled him. If it was just rats... then why did they need a stranger to do it for them?
"They're probably just too busy to handle this trivial matter... yeah, let's go with that." He said to himself in a reassured tone, convincing himself that there wasn't really a threat in the basement.
    ...
An orange light from the torch engulfed the entrance as Theo arrived in the basement. He could still hear the very faint sounds of loud voices and footsteps of the people from above, but other than that it was eerily quiet. Theo could only see a few feet around him, and the rest was just pitch black. As he moved forwards, he could hear scuttling sounds of what he presumed were the rodents all over the floor, probably hiding behind the rows upon rows of wine barrels.

The bartender shrugged in response to Theo's question.
"So long as that appetite of yours concerns itself with soup and ale, then sure. Washing dishes ought to take care of it just fine."
The bartender used a rag to mop off the countertop and keep the rings of condensation from various mugs and bottles from drying off there. He used an entirely different rag to dry the inside of a row of mugs a dishwasher just dropped off behind the counter.
"If you want some meat in that stew you can clean the bathrooms. And if you've got a taste for some fancy liquor, I can oblige you, but there's some rats in the basement you'll have to run out of town. But hey, don't let me spoil your appetite. Eat up stranger. Where you from? Where you headed to?"

"I don't have any goal right now and just wandering aimlessly and nothing to my name at the moment so I guess I can take your requests and do the best I can." Theodore sheepishly smiled at the man, but behind the words that he said, there was a feeling of loss and melancholy.
"I'm just from a small farm that's west of Elendaron, more or less near Bunwei. Some... matters happened that lead me to leaving my home behind. Right now, I don't know where to go..." Theodore just stared at his meal as he tried to suppress his feelings and telling someone his sad story. After all, that would only leave a bad taste, right?
"Anyways..." Shaking off those deep feelings again, Theodore faced the bartender with a more jovial expression to rid of the negative thoughts. "I'll happily take on your tasks, even if it's just cleaning the basement of rats. They are after all unhygienic and would certainly not bode well for the wine if they were to prolong their stay in there."

"Oi fellas. Pardon me for intrudin'."
A young man with sandy brown hair had been bussing the tables just behind the one occupied by Elwin and Strycnine. He was mostly done clearing the dishes and stale mugs of all from the table but stopped when he caught wind of their concerns.
"Couldn't help but overhear a touch of what you was yawin' about. If you'd like I can ask the bartender to put some good whiskey for you in a cheap bottle. That way you don't rot your gut, and no one's the wiser."
The busboy dressed this up as a kindness, and in some small way it was, but for the most part he was acting in his duty as an employee of the tavern to try and get customers to part with a little more of their cash.

"Cheapest thing we got on the menu is a bowl of vegetable stew. Comes with a decent enough mug of ale. Two copper."
A brand new patron of the Tavern, Theo couldn't have known that the bartender he was dealing with now was a stand-in while the usual one was on vacation. And what luck – Vaddock would have squeezed the poor lad for every tin and copper he had.
"I saw your face fall a bit when you started weighing your purse, is why I mention it. Hey, if you like, you can even work your meal off washing dishes for the night."

Walking past the door, Theo heaved a sigh of relief as he entered the tavern safely. He had been walking a for a long while and soon his eyes had met this quaint little town from afar. It was good resting point for him at the moment so he had thought of taking a break. After leaving his home, he never realized how much he would miss it. He could still remember the times of his childhood. Sitting by the warm fire while his mother tell him of stories. Helping his father out whenever he makes weapons at the smithy. But alas, life seemed to have an unfavorable impression on the young Theo as tragedy happened and all that was left was him.

Shaking off those negative thoughts of his, Theo stopped reminiscing on his tragic past and forced himself to look forwards.

Cozy. That was the first impression Theo got from this tavern as he walked towards the counter. Merry men drinking and the local minstrel playing his own tune which made the atmosphere in this tavern all the more lively.
Sitting at the counter, Theo beckoned for the bartender to order some food. Taking out a sack of gold from his back pouch, Theo realized that he was starting to run low on his money. He had paid quite the expense to travel here, and now that he was about to order his lunch, he felt the weight on his gold pouch getting lighter and lighter. He needed to find a source of income fast.
After waiting for a while, his order was soon delivered to him and Theo indulged himself on the warm food.
