I walk into the shadow of the cathedral. Through the giant guarded doors and into the dread hall, I venture forward, carrying my packages of meat and a strange compass. The pews are empty now- the uselessness have all gone- and I am both grateful for the solitude and apprehensive of what I will be facing alone. I can see why Sophie did not want to come back here.
I approach the throne and stop several meters away from the chained figure. Behind me, great stone doors open once more, but I am not focusing on that. I kneel somewhat awkwardly before the throne. The contents of my arms threaten to spill out if I’m not careful. Nerves pinned my voice down and I clear my throat. “I presume I am addressing the martyr?” My thoughts are racing. There are a million different things I could think to say, but I am wary to speak the wrong thing. “Please, my friends and I are not from this world and we would like to go home. What do you want?”

Outside the cathedral, a small, quick flash would be seen. At first, it seemed like nothing came from it, until something large and inky black slithered from behind the fountain. Like a shadow, it ran across the ground to the cathedral. It seemed to stare at the doors… Actually, it was! A large, yellow eye popped from the inky slime and looked up at the magnificent building. Even without a real face, one could tell that it felt despair and fear.

The star has light blue gems into it,the base made of some sort of dark, heavy metal. you feel....odd.Like something else is there with you,a gentle hand on your shoulder

Theres no way to activate them, the space in the metal that shows whirring gears inside of them is very narrow. Maybe a couple sheets of paper would fit but not a finger or even a screwdriver

I only have a glimpse of the murky interior of the cathedral and sunlight glinting off of the scalloped plating of two giant sentinels before the doors close with a resounding bang, and Jack is eclipsed from view. I wipe my hands nervously on my pant legs and spin in a few frenetic circles as I try to orient my thoughts. "Okay, okay. We will both be just fine." I pause when my eyes catch on the gleaming star in one of the statue's hands. "Right, then." I climb up on the statue's stone plinth and gently prise the gleaming object from its loose grip. Might as well test drive another doodad while I'm at it.
I plop it into my pocket and cross the distance to the clocktower in short, quick strides, entering and scaling the stairs to the top floor, where the frozen party is exactly as we left it:
"upstairs is a lounge straight out of the great gatsby. deactivated people made of shiny metal and old clock parts stand around. THe tables are full of pearls, vases of flowers and bottles of alcohol.dented pocket watches hang from the light fixtures. A white wooden door stands unassisted in the middle"
Before examining the 'alcohol,' I take a moment to more carefully survey all of the inhabitants of the room, looking for hints as to what may set their gears spinning into motion. Maybe it's curiosity, maybe it's their unnerving stillness making me feel like I'm trapped in a glitzy diorama, but the fact that there has been more depth to every location we've visited so far makes me think we missed something vital here.

“Thank you.” I take the compass from Sophie. It feels strange to have it back in my hands.
I jump at the church bells. However, despite the creepy procession, it didn’t seem like there was any danger. I stayed with Sophie as the uselessness pass us. I pick up the packet of angel meat once they are gone. “Wish me luck. I’ll see you soon. Stay safe.”
With that, I enter the cathedral.

Giants made of seashells guarded the doors, opening them. The cathedral is dim, lit only by the light coming through the many stained glass windows. The pews omce chock full of veiled figures are now empty, leaving offerings of hundreds of lit candles, flowers and other things  along the path to the altar and on the steps. In lew of an altar, a throne sits at the front, a small figure chained to it. Off to the side is another set of doors

"No, no, that sounds good...." I trail off, thinking about the popping, fizzing static, the empty space between my ears while I was in the cathedral. At best, I'd probably be a liability to Jack. At worst, I might turn against him. Who knew what the Martyr could command me to do in close quarters? No, better not risk it.
"Just one thing. There are these...crows, ravens, or whatever, sitting in the rafters, waiting to divebomb on command. I'd say bring food to distract them," I eye up the meat packages meaningfully, "but I don't know if that would actually help. I got the sense that they're totally loyal to the Martyr. Honestly, I don't know how to circumvent them, so just... don't provoke her, if you can help it."
I stare at him worriedly for a beat. "We'll meet back here when we're done, okay? I'll just bring a bottle back with me and we can pass it between us until it needs a refill. I've got the pockets for it." I smile and stick my hands into my hoodie's pouch demonstrably, but my smile flattens as I  turn thoughtful, my fingers brushing against metal -- the compass. I had completely forgotten about it.
"Actually, you should take this. It might point you in the right direction if you have any questions come up while you're sleuthing." I offer the compass to Jack.

I nod along as Sophie explains her logic. Both her ideas for water and my new title seemed sound. “So does that mean that I have diplomatic immunity here?” I joke in response. “How convenient.”
I catch Sophie’s glance back at the cathedral. It’s not hard to guess her feelings about the looming structure. Still, it’s one of the places that we need to go. We can’t avoid it forever. “Look,” I begin, “I’ve got an idea and you’re probably not going to like it. I don’t like it.” I steel myself, committing to at least talking about this bad idea. “But maybe we should split up for a little bit. You try to find water and I’ll poke around the Cathedral. We can meet back here in an hour. I just feel like we’ve been running around in circles and that we should to cover more ground.”

Jack unceremoniously dumps his burden near the fountain, and I follow suit, the weight starting to tire my arms. To be fair, this place seems to have no time or weather, and there's been no other foot traffic here besides us and the procession of blind devotees, but a part of me still feels compelled to furtively nudge it into the unshifting shadow of the demoness's wings, just in case. I wipe away a trickle of shining ichor from my hand, shuddering. Must've been a haunch of celestial meat.
"Okay, so, remember the bottles of alcohol in the clocktower? And how they're probably not alcohol? I was thinking we could test that theory out, the next time we're in there. If it's undrinkable, though, I'd wager our next best bet would be the ponds where the geisha were. Nothing attacked me when I took one of the doll smoke-bomb things, and I don't think they would begrudge us a drink. I mean, running water would be better, but...I don't really trust that river."
I idly kick a pebble, considering my next words. "'Heathen' doesn't usually have good connotations, but I haven't seen anything be outright hostile towards you yet. The deer only seemed to think Katana and I should get the axe, and like, vaguely warned you to stay away from the Dear Leader." I glance around at the cathedral, its shadow stretching imposingly into the courtyard, completely at odds with the noonday sun. "So I'm thinking you may be a 'Heathen" because you aren't a follower or creation of the Martyr, but that doesn't mean the occupants of this place view you as an enemy or a threat warranting violence. They're just...warry of you...because you're unaligned, so to speak."

Still.nothing had changed in this place since you were here last.  Not a cloud had moved, not a movement on the clock face, not even a darkening of the sky or a splotch of blood on the edge of the fountain.

I follow Sophie out of the shop, carrying my share of the meat. There’s no easy way to carry something that you want absolutely no part of, but I think I managed it well as we headed for the relative safety of the courtyard. I drop my packet of meat beside the bloody fountain and wrinkle my nose. I had no idea where we were supposed to keep any of it. Although, knowing the strange tendencies of this world, would it even rot?
“Well, i can’t imagine us needing an infinite supply of water just yet,” I say first. “The crazy deer thing made it sound like this place wasn’t made to last forever. So, feel free to share your source.” I stick my hands into my pockets as I think about how to address the next topic. It was strange to see the inhabitants of this nightmare refer to Sophie and Katana by different labels. It was even stranger to hear myself given a label. “I’m not sure why I’m a ‘heathen’ or why we’re only hearing this now. Maybe it’s because I didn’t have a place in this world before I woke up? At least, I hope not.”

"Eueueuergthththank you." I said, accepting my heavy, drippy share of the burden and shifting it in my arms with a grimace.  I turned to look to make sure the butcher was out of hearing range before whispering conspiratorially to Jack. "Okay, so...I think I know where we might find water if we can't safely get it at the banks of the river or somewhere else, but we need to test it, first, and there would be a limited supply of it, if it is viable." I step out of the shop, trying to angle my foot to prop the door open for Jack to follow. "We also need to find some way to use this or store it, and we need to talk about what 'heathen' could possibly mean in your case."

“Well, heathen is a bit strong...” I say, looking back at Sophie. This was the first I’d heard the term. I didn’t have time to dwell on it right now, but part of me wondered what it meant. “Never mind. Well take a little bit of angel, some god, and a bit of human. Thanks.” The hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end. I wanted no part of any of the meat, but better to take it on the off chance that it could help us.

The word 'Saviors' conjures memories in my mind of crows lining the cathedral rafters, eyes beady and beaks snapping, razor-sharp. I stare at what look like plucked wings in some of the containers, thinking that as flying creatures, it would make sense if they could bring down an angel.
My eyebrows shoot up as soon as Jack asks for a cut. Oh, okay. We're doing this then. All told, it wasn't a bad idea -- we could use the 'meat' to bait other creatures for food, or as a distraction.
I eye Jack and school my expression. "Does that mean he's a 'heathen,' then? I was a Useless, if I remembered correctly, so I didn't think the label applied to me, but I wanted to be sure. "And what kind of meat do you have on offer, besides angel?"

I was halfway between the door and the counter. We could just run. The butcher couldn’t catch us in time. We wouldn’t have to be in this shop anymore.
On the other hand... This was our first connection to the Martyr.
Despite every bone in my body telling me that this was an awful idea, I took a step closer to the counter. In my best not-afraid-of-the-meat voice, I said, “Yes, I want to buy the meat. What does it cost? Where are the Saviors?” There’s no money in my pockets, but I can cross that bridge later.

I watch the death mask quiver and undulate with the thing's -- Desperation's -- detached and  informative speech, and feel acid crawling up my throat from nausea and an empty stomach. I'm hungry, getting hungrier, but I can't even begin to fathom what bad karma it would mean to eat an angel, or anything else in this shop, for that matter.
I take my cue from Jack and start inching towards the doorway. "Okay, who are these 'Saviors?' And what sin did the angel commit to warrant death and dismemberment? And where do angels even come from, here?"

I nearly jump out of my skin as the butcher emerges from the back room. As the thing talks, a rising wave of revulsion threatens any composure I had left. I take a slow step back towards Sophie.
“Angel?” I ask meekly. I can taste bile in the back of my throat and my words are slow to form into a coherent sentence. “Who gives you the angel meat? Where do they get it from?”

Beewolf reacted to Tyler in Completely useless and random were-curse generation thread
As the title thread, the idea is to create a method of inflicting were-curses upon characters, but with the added caveat that the curse may be very inconvenient and/or completely useless (or straight-up detrimental). But to me, curses should not be something that are easy to live with in general, so why should it only be a seemingly "cool" or "dignified" curse like turning into a werewolf? Why not a were-turtle or a were-cacti? Inflicting your character with such a curse can create unique or comic circumstances in character, and at the very least, you could just use as a plot device to generate a story of your character working to undo/reverse the curse.
As for the how or what causes the curse? I'm going to say that is something up to the player OR GM of any given thread. If say a GM decides that they want a condition of a player's involvement, or the consequence of a character's action, to result in them being inflicted with a were-curse, then that's one way. Or a player can just decide to have their character have one at random, or even create a new character who has the curse as an integral part of their character. This could even be part of random generated debuffs in quests and artifact threads.
Now, on to the generation... I'm laying out the basic idea of how it would work below, but this is not final. I would like crowd-sourced ideas for unique effects, conditions and "cures", I've just got some starting ideas listed below. Ideally, the more the better. Just avoid things that don't make any sense (like, you can't become a "were-month" or a "were-galaxy", because... yeah, that doesn't make sense, so just use common sense).
    Anyway, here's the process:

    Step 1. The Curse
Using the Valucre Dice Rolling Thread, roll a D3 to determine what class of curse your character will suffer: 1 = Animal | 2 = Object | 3 = Other If you roll a 1, use a random animal generator to determine the creature. How humanoid or feral the transformation will be your choice. Here is a good random animal generator. If you roll a 2, use a random object generator to determine the object. How many human features and mobility the object has will be your choice. Here is a good random object generator. If you roll a 3, use the chart below to determine a subject, some may include further opportunity for random generation:

    Step 2. The Conditions
Again using the Valucre Dice Rolling Thread, roll a D100 to determine the condition that causes the were-curse to take effect:
(until the list is full, assume all open slots are just "during the full moon")
    Step 3. The Cure
Once more using using the Valucre Dice Rolling Thread, roll a D100 to determine what must be done to cure your character:
(until the list is full, assume all open slots are "If they die", meaning they cannot be cured)

When all is said an done, you should be able to fill in the following sentence to summarize your character's condition:
[Character name] is a were[curse type] who transforms [condition], and can only end their curse [cure].
    Example:
Jane Doe is a werecow who transforms when drunk, and can only end their curse if they perform the chicken dance on top of the tallest mountain in the world on a Thursday in December during a thunderstorm.

As I watch in macabre fascination as the mermaid is defleshed, only for the remainder to then be cannibalized, it makes me wonder, not for the first time, about the wildlife of this place, and what might lurk beneath the surface of a pond or river here. In our last encounter with marine life, Katana was mobbed by arts and craft koi. Were all bodies of water in this world going to subject us to the same type of predation? Where would we source drinking water from, if they were? More to the point, did this nightmare sushi live in the river, the only other source of possible fresh water besides the koi-infested ponds that we'd seen so far? I was beginning to feel parched, and basic human needs were quickly becoming a point of concern.
I hear Jack speak and the dreaded ringing of a bell,  and turn my attention to the man -- no, the -- I feel my face spasm a bit as I try to gauge where the thing before us falls on the man-animal-monster spectrum of this place, with its uncanny, melted appearance -- and then point to one of the meat containers in answer, directing my finger to hover between parts which obviously belonged to a man, and parts that did not resemble anything sapien. "If I may ask, where do you source your meat from, er...sir?" I felt it politic to be polite, given the, by all appearances, fresh blood dotting his hands and apron.
