question, can your character come from different time periods? Like say 1820s?

  Nope. You can just say your character has no idea what happened and they’re now just trying to make sense of the world they’re in. That’s pretty common, so is traveling through some sort of portal for whatever reason is appropriate to back story or plot
  
  We feature a giant portal in the Valucre planet setting and it’s often used as a plot device to introduce characters
