Just FYI, though there's nothing wrong posting in an older thread, you should note the thread you posted in hasn't seen activity in over 3mos, the Unsettling Winter thread. Just a kindly note!

I thought of a better way to say it
There isn’t a rule that says your character can’t just be an idea in your head and a description of what they look like. That’s all you need to start playing in threads. However it’s common for people to play multiple characters and do so over weeks and months so people find it useful to organize the character information into sheets, but the site doesn’t require that. If a particular player does require them for the game they want to run, they’ll say so in their interest check
-
I see, well you're really helpful here. I just didn't wanna make a sheet that lacks or is too long winded so the possibility of just having it in my mind is great, though I will have multiple characters, I had over 80 at one point but after some mash ups and liquidations I've only got a slim 30

Just so! It's a certain viewpoint among the roleplaying community that is neither right nor wrong, I reckon. Some people want to have PCs that they admire tooth and nail, and no fault to them for that, since it is a delight to embody ourselves in our characters.
I just kind of take a novel-telling approach to roleplay more than a gaming approach, granted that this is suitably debatable for a General Chat thread lol, but what I mean is that authors can write some horrible characters and not exactly like them. In roleplay as we understand it (e.g. Valucre), your PC can kind of be your avatar—like in the movie Avatar, a means to carry yourself into a whole different world, while not necessarily becoming someone else.
I like my characters to, while in some ways preserving some of my own personality traits, otherwise be separate from myself. Sometimes that means being the person I could only hope to be—you know, those katana-toting knights in black and white armor who charm women with a wink and slay dragons with a handshake or...something. Trust me, I love it. On the other hand, sometimes it means portraying characters who are nigh the total opposite of who I see myself as being. This is Veron Blacktear.
Not unheard of. In professional writing, shall we say, you get Mr. Hyde, Patrick Bateman, Phillip Pullman's Mrs. Coulter, Shakespeare's Iago or GRRM's Petyr Baelish (or GRRM's...wow...Ramsay Snow, Gregor Clegane, Euron Greyjoy). Is there at least some semblance of understanding among these characters? Yes, for some of them, but there's a reason I italicized "Euron Greyjoy". 😉

One of the best things I ever read, "A villain doesn't want to beat the hero. The villain wants to scar them," and I agree with that. The degree changes with the story. Some characters aren't meant to last. They're meant to be locked up, die, etc. In the end the smile because of the scars they leave behind. Although, I do want to see your dragon slaying ninja, I know of the grin you probably wear while being Veron.
Eventually, I'll probably play a villain, too. If I'm allowed. I can probably hear an old voice speaking from my noggin, and it's a voice that could use an upgrade. And duality exists in several works of literature. The protagonists are only good as the antagonists. Even if the characters are all shades of grade, lighter grays shine brighter because of how dark those darker spots get.
-
Veron doesn’t make me grin so much as frown. I’m aware of the monster I have made, and while some might say that and pat themselves on the back, this is a monster who I don’t admire.
Some folks can’t really grasp that and it’s understandable because it ultimately depends on the writer’s perspective. Most of us want to control PCs who appeal to us in more ways than not, and this is not wrong, I do the same, but sometimes the writer’s goal is to portray an irredeemable persona and that’s what I aim for with Veron.
I don’t like him. What’s to like? He’s a sadist and worse, who has done things that I can’t reveal on the site, and not the things that make one grin because of how awesomely evillish they are, but some truly depraved things. I don’t know how familiar you are with A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones but take Gregor Clegane—what is there to like? He is a monster, just not the kind of Ledger’s Joker or Hannibal Lecter who you root for. I doubt that George RR Martin was grinning while telling of the Mountain’s despicable deeds, but it had to be told in order to tell his story, and this is just as achievable in roleplay largely where the writer doesn’t intend to ‘avatar’ their PC as some kind of extension of himself but rather treat that PC as a separate entity.
Clearly, the writers behind Gregor still had to invest in him enough to portray him, but they didn’t need to smile while doing so. Cinema, arguably, portrays this sentiment more clearly, since you have eyes to see whether a scene in which a character commits some terrible crime is gratuitous or is nothing but tragic, and can glean how the staff might have felt when they arranged it. Not much to grin about.
Yet it’s still done for the sake of storytelling, which is my driving force behind Veron and the Lost Scions, alongside worldbuilding. I aim to paint those darker shades of the world that are often mentioned on the fly, but without the glitz and glamour. Whether I succeed in that endeavor is in the air—I have a number of literary hurdles to overcome—but that’s where my enjoyment comes from; not from the Lost Scions or their leader or how awful they are, but how they ultimately fit into the shared setting, serving as scum upon the earth but also as a device for collaborative roleplay (eg “do you need a mercenary?”) as well as a tool to offer general storytelling and challenge with my own plots.
Certainly, though, Veron and company are not the kind of people I ever want to meet. I hope they die. xD

Oh, sure! I would be very interested to find out what secrets your character reveal. The direction of Yh'mi, its true history, and what it actually is, is open for interpretation through RP. The Order is quite strict about who they allow out of the gates of Inns'th and into Yh'mi, though. In particular, they won't allow solo adventurers as it's too dangerous. You can approach this in two ways.
1) Affecting the actual lore of Yh'mi: Take one of the Order's quests as an excuse for your character to travel into Yh'mi while conducting his/her exploration, or you can even propose a quest. As long as you let me know beforehand how the quest will impact Yh'mi or Inns'th, we can work out details such as quest rewards. Significant points about Yh'mi brought up during the quest can become canon upon its conclusion, and can potentially affect what quests I put up in the future.
2) Without affecting Yh'mi's lore: You can use the setting of Yh'mi for your character's development and his/her background and motivations, without it actually impacting on lore. i.e. it's true for your character, but might be just rumour/myth/hearsay to anyone else RPing in the area.

Well, all things considered, even before starting here you've earned my respect. It's rare that I see any site administrator who gives a single *expletive* about how the day to day goes. However, that may just be me being used to the GITP and 8-bit theater forums. I look forward to interacting with the community here.

Fiddy works for the Loch Ness monster. That's why Nessy is always asking people for change. Bending down to ask people for their money so he can pay his worker's wages. How much you ask? Treefiddy.

Hope that you're still enjoying the site, and if you're looking for something to do drop on by the world fair in the gaian academy (terrenus).

If you're looking for a place to post and write tons, check out the world fair: http://www.valucre.com/index.php?/topic/23886-the-world-fair-interest/ The threads are all linked in that first post, the Main Thread and San Yara thread being the most active (for now), and the newest being the Argus thread. What do you think? Not quite your cup of tea?

I'm writing from my phone so pardon any brevity but let me say that you and I share a very close and passionate perspective on the nature of writing and how it isn't a separate thing from role play. Is role play writing the same as writing a novel for a professional market? No more than it is writing a script or a piece of poetry. It's writing. I come here to write, to equal parts indulge in and improve on my craft.

Anyway if you're judging the site off the tavern of legend there's only one thing to point out. The tavern is accessible only by members that have been on the site for 90 days or less. If the people that come here are willing to improve their writing and such you aren't going to find them in the place limited to the newest members. If the ToL is the sole or even main or even half contributor of your perspective you can see where the speed bump is. I hope you stick around and see m...

Howdy! Loved reading that little Interests section in your profile
I take it that you're a fan of the classic fantasy genre without a doubt, but is it your favorite hands down or? In any case, and small talk aside if you don't care for it, welcome to Valucre! Let me know if you have any questions.

If you have a specific type of place you'd like to go to, I can point you in the right direction. Like if you want her to enter into a steampunk setting, I'd say check out Tia in Terrenus or Antigone Isles in Genesaris. Want more futuristic? Renovatio or Alterion might be the place for you.
If you want to find out more about the places themselves and how they differ, the best place to get that information in a form that's not just a condensed, summary kind of thing is t...

Lyn is fairly adaptable as far as all that goes. Is there cross-world travel? Her initial dropkick put her into the united worlds of Kingdom Hearts, so I'm familiar with the concept of having lots of setting environments possible. I'm rewinding her story so that she lands here just after she opens the first Doorway that crosses the Fourth Wall. I don't want to completely overwhelm her or she'll curl into a ball and never emerge. *chuckle*

mostly taking the piss. the semantics of soundbites and other quoteables are something of a low-hanging fruit as far as philosophical questions go. pulling out foundational ethics off the back of a "good deal, bad man" is...overkill in my opinion, to say the least.
put another way, one could probably contrive an example of making a "good deal with a bad man" even in the most generous and originally intended definitions of those words (for example, whenever that asshole at gamestop is forced to scan my buy-one-get-one free coupon).
praise forum software for being obtuse!
-
the whole concept of good and bad is an unnecessary complication. That's why most of my characters are neither good nor bad (Dauner, Gozen and Shelly)

Ha. You should know by now that an artist's anathema is being solicited to create for free. In any case, I don't knit. I'll put it on my list of things to cross stitch <3 Fair warning: I haven't actually embroidered anything in like 8 years =p
What would you do with it if I did?
Or are you just jealous that Nette got her name written on me in sharpie? <3

Although the TOL has been a nice sandbox for new members itching for some writing while looking around the rest of the site it isn't the most accurate picture of the site as a whole. I see you've been browsing through the water cooler which is great, and the organized plots there are more. Well. Organized. And usually in the actual world of Valucre which the tavern jsnt.

But yeah, that was post pretty great. I particularly find Hali's words about Taen being a conqueror to be interesting in light of this little bit from the Taen timeline thread:
"Emperor Titus and Taen military leave for Ursa Madeum, planning to invade it to gain resources for Lunaris"
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... ? -
Lol our initial reasoning for attacking UM was for resources. Taen is a harsh place to live, so Lunaris was running short.
IC, Titus chose UM specifically because it was a win-win scenario. Free people + get resources. His White Knight personality wouldn't let him just randomly invade peaceful places.
-
But yeah, resources were actually a pretty big part of the initial invasion. UM being freed from Damien, although it's been pushed the forefront, was actually more just about why UM specifically was picked rather than, say, Selemath and not the actual driving force behind Taen's military going active.

It's more of a setting suggestion. Valucre is one world: https://www.valucre.com/lore.html/world/valucre-overview/
And in this world what I think makes a great medieval fantasy setting is Ursa Madeum!: https://www.valucre.com/topic/42728-the-islands-of-ursa-madeum/
I'm going to start a thread for you so we can get more suggestions as well but I think that's a good place to start
