    Poll - Valucre theme

Light reminds me of the older iterations of the website (I came in around 2013). It feels good and homey.

Terrenus Bounty List [need bounty hunters!]

Wait wait wait, let me defend my honor. Let the records show that it didn't "die". We got to the required 10 posts, but our plan was to shoot for more after my planned absence lol. It will start up soon again. Chase csl in another thread that takes place at a later time - Cassandra's mine in this one. We rolled and Cassandra got the escape result anyway. Ok, swooping out :)

    The Moonwood Pursuit

The Inquisitor travels in an airship named, Aurora, conveying building supplies to the disaster-stricken areas of Gaian Academy. She watches Deepview Island come into view from atop the main deck. The sight of the Academy calls to mind some of the few sweet memories she has. Though most of her youth was confined to serving in rotating Ignatz churches, each summer would invariably present an opportunity to spend a few weeks at the Academy, learning astronomy or herbology or some other subject deemed edifying by the priesthood. She wonders if Professor Etam, the octopus shaman from her younger days, is still busy keeping curious tykes away from the exotic greenhouse. Back then, they would have arrived at the Academy by Lightning Rail. She spots the dilapidated ruins of the train system which stop halfway across the lake, since declared too costly and vulnerable to properly maintain. But it is the Academy’s reliance on the western transit station, essentially a quay for hover-ferries, and now in disrepair, which has stymied the recovery effort from the latest disaster in the form of a rogue student. Holograms project off of her handheld crystal array from the present casefile; interviews with former professors and peers, schematics of the Academy’s layout and the path of destruction as it unfolded in real time, articles on the White Prism Obelisk and the catacombs beneath, clips recorded by the Academy’s security geodes of the pale woman and the lethal, swift beast upon which she flew. The student in question is named Cassandra Sieversal. She is described by those who could only claim acquaintanceship as reclusive and prone to long bouts of sickness. A shut-in. Apparently she had one close friend, a student mage named Madrias, but there have been no sightings of him since the incident. The Inquisitor lists him as a possible accomplice in her notes. She forwards footage of the beast in question to her contacts in the Ranger division of the military, but there is no match to anything in their bestiary records. A new species? She tries P.E.T.A.L next, with more success. Analysis of the images reveals a rough composition indicative of both organic (scales, bones) and inorganic (paper, wires) constituents. Transmutation magic? The Inquisitor knows a thing or two about that. Transmutation of inanimate objects of vastly different origins is impressive...but granting animacy is prodigious. And extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. The airship lands and the Inquisitor is briefed by the head of Campus Security. Interviews continue throughout the day and the Inquisitor personally surveys the destruction. On the way to the dining hall, she passes the large tent site set up for the displaced students. Their youth makes them resilient to their recent pains. Still they smile, study, gossip, play, and prepare for the next day of classes. Her official presence and trailing retinue of staff members seem to assuage their anxieties. She sits with transit system staff at dinner and they discuss their encounter with the student. They bicker about what should have been done, who should have been there, and which cannons should have been properly calibrated beforehand. Eventually one mage present at the stand brings up the success of ice magic against the flying beast. This observation is met by unanimous agreement and solemn nodding heads. The Inquisitor sends a requisition note to the Alchemy Department before heading to her quarters. The events of the day spin about her as she lies in bed and attempts to make sense of the jigsaw pieces. She reflects on how similar her own talents are to those of Cassandra, and the similar way by which she would have been described as a youth. Recluse. Loner. Dangerous. What evil paths, had she not been brought up in the glorious light of the Church, would her own talent for Unnatural magic have led her down? However, her empathy is not blinding; she is resolved to put the girl down if there is no other choice. She receives the Department’s tinctures, cold to the touch, in the morning. Her plan is to search for clues at the transit station, but there is news of a sighting matching the physical description of the creature affiliated with Cassandra at the Moonwood, an ancient forest home to thousands of fae clans, to the southwest of Tia. Aurora is already scheduled to pick up a new shipment of supplies from Tia later in the day, but the implicit threat of the Inquisitor’s official edict speeds up that timetable remarkably. It will take two long days for her to travel to Aossin, a moderately sized village positioned to the west of the forest. She hopes she will not be too late.
  5. @Csl Thread's up: I think the Moonwood will be an entertaining setting for Cassandra to flex her eidokinetic muscle. There really isn't much about it on the site, but it is on the official map and it exists to the southwest of Tia. There's this article in the bestiary about the fairies of the Moonwood. Seems ripe for a gestate beast. 🦄🕊️💮 Enjoy 🙂
  6. Welcome, Dr. Ram. Every good party needs a healer! Technically I'm on the Inquisition side of things, but welcome to the military industrial complex all the same 🙂

    The Moonwood Pursuit (Bounty) Chatter

You could have already started your post, in which case fear not, but I had some thoughts on the upcoming conclusion to our thread as we approach the tenth post. Cassandra and Olivia are good nemeses for each other. Cassandra represents creation, Olivia destruction, with the twist that they both exist on surprising ends of the mortal spectrum. As determined by the coin flip, Cassandra will somehow successfully escape the grasp of the inquisitor. But it might be interesting if Olivia is able to inflict some sort of damage in the process to Erythraean. I'm sure they'll meet again in some future LoD thread (though with all my moving I don't know if I can reasonably participate in Last Chance) and this could be a meaningful incident upon which to further develop their adversarial relationship. Thoughts?

    The Moonwood Pursuit

“As I said, I am an agent of the Gaian Inquisition,” Olivia says slowly, shuffling a few steps backwards as the monster casually brushes away the layers of frost from her alchemical volley. She purposefully ignores the question about whether or not she is alone. For a few silent moments she studies the defensive posture of the monster, the way in which it safeguards Cassandra behind the burly walls of its apelike limbs. Like a bond shared by kin. Mother and child? Or the opposite? Olivia’s eyebrows furrow with bewilderment, as if she were viewing a piece of modernist artwork that had gone over her head. She suddenly shakes her head and coldly chuckles, “Does that thing care for you?” Her lips press together, rising ever so slightly at their edges in a smug smile. “You murdered twenty-three innocents.” She taps a finger below her left eye. “Oh, I can see each one of their souls in your sloppy patchwork. And yet you shaped your golem as an angel. Fostered within it something more than self-preservation. Why? Does it help you sleep better at night?” Her chuckles erupt into the kind of stormy laughter that is devoid of humor, but rich with disdain. At the same time, something wretched seems to roil beneath her left arm and the limb begins to quickly swell in size. Her left arm shoots out from her side like a shadowy lance in the direction of Erythraean’s hand wall. Its target is seemingly clear: Cassandra. Except that, in a way, it is a feint. She hopes that creature will defend against her attack in the same way it defended Cassandra from the flash bang. Olivia’s specialty lies in turning things back into their original, purest state - the way Gaia had intended - through reverse transmutation upon touch. She would shatter Erythraean into its most basic ingredients and put an end to this mockery of creation.

    The Moonwood Pursuit

She repeats the same line of prayer over and over in her head: “Mother, Most High; sacred be Your name. May the Watcher seel our eyes and the Judge weigh our souls and the Executioner carry out Your worthy verdict. Amen.” For the most part, the exercise keeps her breathing and her hands steady while she patiently surveils the stationary construct. In scripture there is peace. That is, until her left arm begins to suggest variations of the prayer. “May the Watcher STEAL our eyes” She quietly spits on the ground beside her. To atone for her heresy she resolves to repeats the prayer correctly another twenty-one times (a good number), but, on the seventeenth time (sevens are wicked), her wretched arm raises the stakes, “DESOLATOR, Most High—” She spits twice. She will have to scrub the limb with the Black Salt when she returns from her mission. The pain will be satisfactory. She repeats her quota of prayers again, this time omitting every seventh word – Her mental ablutions are interrupted by an inquiring voice. Olivia curses her inattention, for already the scene has changed. The aurae of the construct now shield an entirely new being, likely the perpetrator of the noise. Cassandra? But the plan hasn’t changed. First, there is the quiet click of a pin being released, a whirring of air as the object arcs over the boulder into the camp below, and then a muted clunk as the flashbang sticks its landing into the mud. Olivia braces herself against the boulder and covers her eyes with her arms. The sound of a cannon burst is followed by an explosion of light that turns nighttime to day. The device is made with solabernite, giving it the unique property of fluorescing even after the initial disorienting burst, so that when, a second later, Sacks leaps from her position behind the boulder, she sees the true horror of Cassandra’s work illuminated before her eyes. She can only guess at the dangerous ideas of the sacred that must have led Cassandra to shape this flesh golem as an angel. To pose the perverse as holy. “What delicious irony,” cackles her arm, winking a black wart from atop her ring finger. She is surprised to see the wretched limb bared. When did she remove her glove? The black, necrotic looking flesh of her arm is quilted by scars, scabs, and stitched together with sickly yellow constellations of pustules which wind the arm like smallpox. The required ablutions would need to be addressed in full later. She follows up the opening provided by the flashbang by launching three vials of ionized aquantanium, courtesy of Gaian Academy’s alchemy department, at the angel, hoping that it shares the same weakness to ice magic as the flying construct. She lands ten feet away from Cassandra. “My name is Olivia Sacks. By the powers vested in me by the Gaian Inquisition, I hereby place you under arrest for your crimes of wanton destruction, homicide, and” – here she adds a new charge –“perversion of life.”

“So, it wasn’t a reaction to the report. It was a preemptive strike.” Words of scripture come to her mind: “...and the innocent are worthy of the truth.” “Yes,” she admits, turning to the sullen scientist behind her. Yes, Ecks’ attempt to find a cure, to save the lives of countless innocents, had been needlessly dashed by a face-saving operation. Science would always come second to politics in her world -- it was simply his bad luck that he had gotten caught up in it. The truth was that the Church had grown disorganized in the short number of years since its founding; there were too many dissident factions with competing ideologies and interpretations. But, the defense that she was following orders from one of these splinter groups would neither offer him solace nor erase her own blame. She feels the muscle fibers of the horse trembling against her legs. The beast will not last much longer. She responds to the spirit of Harper’s question as she dismounts, shaking her head at the departing soldier: “I will do whatever must be done to ensure that the menace ends here.” She watches as he disappears into the thicket, leaving her with the scientist. Sacks wraps her arms around the head of the heavily breathing horse and, as its legs begin to give out, guides it gently to the ground. She kneels next to the dying beast and massages its sides tenderly. She looks up at Ecks. “I envy this one. It successfully lived out its purpose in Her service, while countless untold trials still await us.”
