    A wrinkle in mine [closed]

To bear witness to Purification is a religious experience. Vehicles come to a stand-still and pedestrians stop to watch the spectacle. The holy flame spreads without kindling, so the event is marked by neither ash nor smoke. There is only light – blazing white light – which floods the lab site and climbs upwards against the walls of the containment barriers. At its peak, the barriers and the light within blossom into a monolith of radiant divinity, conveying a wordless sermon delivered on the righteousness of the moth which evokes gasps of collective awe from the young, and weeping from the old. Sacks prowls between alleyways with her gun drawn. The zealot fights the urge to bask in the light’s warm embrace, but to do so now would be to lose this Gaia-given chance. Tracking the auras of the men moving throughout the city has been like playing an impossible shell game with two marbles and thousands of interposing shells. However, now most of the shells are stationary in worship. She reasons that, since the two men are on the run, they would be unlikely to find any excuse to stop. She would need only to locate a pair of fleeing auras…
  2. @supernal What made you decide to change this? Personally, I liked the idea of being able to rank up my Inquisition character through completed threads.

The purifiers push their way through the smoke, only to be stopped by the jammed door. Roch, the burliest of the three, backs up a few paces and attempts to kick open the door – to no avail. Sacks watches bitterly as the auras of Ecks and Harper fade with every second wasted behind the door. The chaos of the scene seems to encourage the strange compulsions of her alien left hand, which now pulls the full weight of her arm in its mad frenzy, nearly throwing Sacks off balance. Roch and Ito, no strangers to the strange habits of their superior, exchange worried glances beneath their helmets. Damn it all. Sacks rips off the glove with her teeth, revealing the wretched, misshapen limb underneath. The bared hand seems to revel in its freedom as it unfurls its stubby, pustule-stricken fingers and its blackened arthritic knuckles unlock. With her right hand, she forces the naked limb against the center of the metal door. There is a painfully-pitched metallic shriek as the metal rips apart from the inside like a rupturing scab. Sacks pushes aside the sheets of weakened metal and chases the nearly vanished silhouettes of the men into the city.

I forgot when writing my post that Rex actually has a helmet covering his face, so that writing about him being faceless doesn't make a ton of sense. I think in my head canon I had him wearing a partial helmet. Will edit for continuity when I get back on.

Purifier Sacks cannot read the wordless interchange between Ecks and Harper; in fact, through her strange eyes, the two men that stand before her are faceless. Or rather, they have the ingredients of faces – eyes, mouths, noses –, and their individual parts are arranged in the common symmetrical configuration, but as a whole there is no composite effect. Faces have eyes as hands have fingers – physical features and nothing more. However, she can read the greyscale auras which illuminate their silhouettes, which indicate, among other things, their propensity to do evil. Both shine brightly white - a sign of goodness and a generally lawful morality…except for the tendrils of dark grey light which smolder around Rex’s hip bag. Ecks’ hands are filthy with the same dark light. The undeniable taint of Unnatural magic. “Corruption – don’t move!” stammers Sacks. With her right hand she reaches for the pistol holstered at her side. At the same time her left hand leaps out of its pocket, frenziedly grabbing and twitching at the air in the direction of Rex’s hip bag. But it is too late – an explosion of acrid smoke fills the lobby. She manages to fire off two shots in the direction of their fading auras before she is overwhelmed by the full effect of the fumes. Though wracked with fits of coughing, her unique sight allows her to identify the silhouettes of Roch and Ito, and she shepherds them through the smoke in the direction of the escaping men.

The lead purifier weighs the truth in Harper’s words, but she knows before she begins that it is a moot exercise. It is the job of the purifier to deliver the righteous flame without question; curiosity may as well be a cardinal sin in her line of work. Still, there is a personal matter that needs resolving, which try as she might, she cannot put aside… “Meet me on the ground floor,” booms the speaker-receiver. The lead purifier pockets the handheld within the folds of her black trench coat. A flash of silver and sun reveals two polished pistols holstered at her side. “Roch and Ito, you’re with me,” she says, tapping the armored shoulders of two purifiers. They nod, and accompany her as she makes her way across the lab grounds. Both contingents bow heads in farewell. She approaches the main entrance and suddenly her gloved left hand lurches out of her coat pocket. Evidently, neither she nor her purifiers are disconcerted by this spasmodic tic. She merely mutters the word, “filth,” and spits on the ground. She then nods to the one named Ito, who slides a keycard against a wall panel. The three purifiers enter the building.

  10. Hey Lee! Welcome to the site. It looks like you responded to a thread that is all the way from 2016. It doesn't look like the OP is active anymore. Try responding to an interest check on the front page of the Water Cooler (or, even better, post your own interest check). Make sure you introduce yourself in the New Members section of the site too 😁.

Five purifiers scurry out of the trucks and aim their rifles at the man behind the broken window, but a halting gesture from the woman calls off the retaliatory response. She surveys the sudden violence; her glaring eyes move from the desecrated flag, to the sizable dent in the drum’s interrupted enchantment – which now lets out a pained, metallic whine every time it completes a rotation –, to Rex’s position behind the window. The receiver-speaker once more transmits her voice with booming volume that reverberates throughout the site, but now clinical professionalism is replaced with a biting, accusatory tone. “Let me guess. Private Rex Harper? It was your failure to respond to your superiors that triggered our action.” Klein struggled to recover from the shock of the hex-bag hitting the floor. How long had it been since that damned scientist slapped it onto the ground? It reached out for Harper, but as it searched the physical and ethereal landscape for the soldier’s distinct mentalprint it felt its strength waning, ebbing, dissolving. The illusory blocks placed on Rex would fade any second. A new picture of Klein’s reality emerged: imprisonment.

Two Firetrucks of the Inquisition tear through the perimeter fences and hard-brake across the asphalt grounds of the laboratory site, sirens wailing over the thunderous rumbling of the vehicles. Acrid smoke billows in their wake, output, not of the exhaust pipes, but of the molten-hot faithwork – a magitech hymnal of morning prayer, typeset with lead-plated runes of conflagration and consecration as attractive to the human eye as the naked sun – branded onto oil drums which spin furiously in their chasses like colossal prayer wheels caught in a gale. A woman in black military garb is the first to step out of the trucks. She speaks into a receiver which relays her speech with booming volume. “The Inquisition has marked this site for purification.” She pauses to remove a pocket watch from her belt. “To those still alive, you have exactly one hour to evacuate the site. Or be cleansed by flame.” The delivery is clinical. “May the Watcher seel your eyes, the Judge weigh your soul, and the Executioner carry out Her worthy verdict. Amen.” She finishes, bowing her head. Click. The countdown begins. She puts away the receiver and watch, and then stabs the Inquisition standard into the earth.

Its name was Klein. And although Klein could not directly possess Private Harper, from the hex bag nestled safely in the soldier’s pack, it could trawl his mind for memories and procedures. What need did it have of possession, when it had in its grips a soldier habituated to unquestioningly taking orders from his superiors? Klein could glibly influence Rex with illusory lies as long as he stayed in close proximity to the hex bag. Purification teams inbound. Another lie. A fiery protocol dredged up from the soldier’s cortex to induce the men to take the hex bag to Redwater immediately. But Klein unknowingly spoke truth; a black convoy carrying the seal of the Inquisition was on its way.

    I hate reading

I'm going to second Sabriel. It literally (ha) has everything you listed and is amazing. It's part of a great trilogy too! Just go read it please.

“Copy that,” the voice calmly replies. “Purification teams inbound.” “Deliver the hex bag to the village of Redwater. We have a specialist stationed there who will dispose of the object.” Rex would see a map, exactly identical – with even the same creasing – to the one laid out by Ecks, project onto his display. In the southwest corner of the map, about fifty miles from his current position, he would also see a red dot pinging the location of his next objective: a small town, along the way to the Blue Hills, with miniscule script proclaiming its name, “Redwater.”

Cool hair. By the way, I can't read your name without immediately hearing Imagine Dragons. That's what I deserve for not having enough variety in my gym playlist.

Evidently there is better reception in the interior of the lab than in the outside bay area. The voice comes online, but this time with unmuddled clarity. It’s female, tough and alto. It would call to mind a superior officer of the past, solid and dependable. Was that a wave of déjà vu? “Ecks was present at the time of the incident. For all intents and purposes, Ecks is compromised. Send him out of the room – discretely.” “On the ground, next to the examination table, is a woman. In her right shoulder is a hex bag – the theorized vector. Extract it and protect it at all costs.” “Meeting coordinates incoming.” The comm clicks off.
