Terrenus Military [Overview; Personnel; Assignments]

Recommended Posts

Hierarchy
Divisions and Offices
The Terrenus military is divided into Divisions, Units within those departments, and Ranks within those units. Regardless of specialty, all members of the military go through Basic Training to ensure combat proficiency and are also trained in Basic Diplomacy so that resolutions are not always violent or combat-oriented. When on missions, commanding officer duties may be given to a soldier of any rank, depending on their skillset or experience.

Divisions: Communications, Operations, Research and Development
Ranks for enlisted personnel: Private > Corporal > Sergeant
Ranks for officers: First Lieutenant > Captain > Major > Colonel
Ranks by Appointment: General | Director | PeaceKeeper

Command
The administrative and executive arm of the Terrenus military. This division includes Generals, Handlers, Directors and PeaceKeepers.

PeaceKeeper: PeaceKeepers are the cream of the crop. The highest ranking military officers with the most intensive training and access to the highest levels of military resources and magitechnology that Terrenus has to offer. Originally there was one PeaceKeeper for each major city, but shifting geopolitical landscapes, growing threats and new technologies have contributed to the expansion of the PeaceKeeper program to approximately 40 officers of varying skill and experience deployed across the country.
Note - Not to be confused with the canon defense team

Director: Also known as department heads, directors are considered the de facto officer in charge (OIC) of their unit. Directors are assigned out of any ranks for various reasons, ranging from experience and time spent serving, to possession of skills in demand for the unit (this is especially true in newer, STEM based units such as those found in R&D), to political motivations such as honors won, fostering relations, and so on.

Communications
Primary Function: The collection, encryption, storage, analysis, communication, and leveraging of information through mundane and magical means. Communications facilitates conversation between departments and the extrapolation of significant information out of data.

Diplomats: Diplomats form and maintain relations with sovereign entities with regards to issues of peace and war, trade and economics, culture, environmental concerns, the rights of sentient people, and are responsible for negotiation treaties and agreements before they are officially endorsed by any politicians. Terran diplomats are trained in economics, FACS, negotiations, public speaking, media literacy, and linguistics (many are polyglots).

F.I.S.T.: Federal Investigative Service of Terrenus. FIST agents are the equivalent of FBI detectives. FISTers can expect high-tension situations and low-combat and are more concerned with the identification of criminal elements and on gathering of information on them than engaging them directly.

Rangers: Skilled hunters, expert trackers, and survival specialists intimately familiar with the Savage Wilds of Terrenus. Rangers are equipped with anti-magic hearthwood (wood from a mystical tree as tough as stone but pliable as any other wood) bows that cause violent reactions.

  • Urban rangers: rangers trained for the streets and alleys of urban landscapes over the trees and rivers of the wild

Recon: Divination specialists whose collected personnel aggregate knowledge of over 300 different forms and methods of divination. Responsible for the gathering of intelligence and the erecting of counterespionage spells and defensive measures.

  • Raptor pilots: The deployment arm of the reconnaissance unit, pilots are specialists in high speed intercept missions and leverage the use of cutting edge military aircraft to patrol and police Terran airspace

Operations
Primary Function: To coordinate and execute military actions in response to developing situations, designed to resolve a conflict in favor of the Terran government. Personnel in operations are trained in advanced combat and warfare strategy.

Elemental Knights: Training imbues elemental affinity where none previously existed, and experts nurture what affinity might already exist, for both combat and non-combat applications. Common elements are earth, fire, wind and water. Uncommon elements include electricity, sound, metal, and plants. Electricity and metal knights can also specialize in armored fighting vehicles (AFVs) and heavy artillery.

  • Note - As a unit dedicated to the 'defense of the realm', the knights have been around since before the establishment of the modern Terran government. Internal factions and houses of the elemental knights have been around for centuries, and so often still maintain archaic traditions and customs (secret handshakes, coded language, annual celebrations held in observance of historical events

Inquisitor: Official members of the Gaian clergy granted federal authority. Their numbers are not accounted for in any military dossier; they are accountable to the church rather than the government, and when on an Inquisition, accountable only to themselves. Specialists in interrogation and information extraction. Unit no longer holds official military ranking but instead will collaborate with federal government where required

OPMED: Operations Medics are combat trained emergency medical personnel charged with keeping wounded soldiers alive and fighting - for critical wounds they provide emergency care to stabilize patients long enough to evacuate them. They employ a mixture of magitech and traditional magic to succeed in this role, but due to also being a combat position they are not truly Valkyries, Clerics or Doctors.

Snipers: "Death with telescopic eyes". Snipers undergo one of the most intensive training programs that the military has to offer, and is in fact so comprehensive that your entry-level sniper will not see live combat for several years beyond bootcamp. Snipers are often candidates for higher level training programs and have been used in Terrenus's most decisive victories.

Spies (don't metagame): Specially trained agents discharged that assume different identities for short and long term missions. Spies come in all makes and models and you never know if the tavern drunk or the old nun is actually a spy in disguise. Spies are trained in advanced close-quarters combat as, due to the high-risk, high-tension nature of their job, may require them to subdue or incapacitate a threat. They also make use of polymorph potions, full body gear, and magic to generate disguises and maintain their cover when deployed on missions.

Splinters: Any member of a specialized team of operatives or soldiers. Almost always five-person teams, often strategically deployed for any high level emergencies or disruptions. Trained in culturejamming, guerrilla tactics, psyops, and economic destabilization

  • Wasteland Border Patrol: WBP soldiers are trained in the same squad tactics as Splinter cell operatives and are then often deployed to guard the Wastelands, where they must deal with rogue bandits and suujali clusters. They are armed with vakar weaponry and Suujali carapace armor. In the WBP there is the additional distinction between scouts, who gather information and report back, and riders, who actively engage with criminal offenders.
  • Beasts of Nature: Soldiers who leverage shaman-based magitech and possession rituals to take on amplified animal attributes through spiritual channeling.

Research and Development
Primary function: To discover and create new knowledge about scientific and technological topics of interest for the purpose of uncovering and enabling development of valuable products, processes and services.

Codebreakers: Work closely with Communications and are responsible for analyzing information systems in order to uncover any "encrypted" aspects of that system which may be unknown even to the designers. They are also responsible for work on new protocols in Terrenus and data mining from national and global sources. Experts in information design, policy, cryptography (making and breaking) and steganography.

Doctor: Doctors are the backbone of medical research in the military and are also a specialized non-combat role often kept dangerously close to battlefields so they can apply cutting edge medical techniques on critically wounded soldiers. Their job is among the most mentally demanding positions in the military, and their mixture of magitech, magic and medical training makes them among the most qualified emergency medical personnel in all of the Terrenus.

Engineers: Engineers specialize in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, materials, chemical engineering as well as mechatronics and electro-optics. Responsible for military technology as well as infrastructure defense.

H.E.R.B.: Historical and Ecological Research Branch. Responsible for the identification, categorization, and preservation of historically and ecologically significant locations and species.

P.E.T.A.L.: Paleoanthropic, Educational and Transcultural Anthropology League. Responsible for the archaeology of different species, the excavation of ancient sites, and the exploration of new ones.

Equipment
Rank

  • Private
    • Materials: Ability to check out object, weapon, and armor class amounts of all materials in the Terrenus material list
    • Crystal Communications Device: CCD. Quantum encrypted communications to/from Central as well as with other units. Frequencies must be tuned into the device but can handle multiple-band communication.
    • E.M. Spectacles: Crystal lenses, in the form of glasses, monocles, contacts, etc, that can be made sensitive to different bands of the electromagnetic spectrum via pressure. Allows for night vision, magnetic imaging, and thermal imaging.
    • Military ID: Smart-card with stored photographic and biometric information as well as encrypted token with access pin. Grants access to military barracks, armaments, research, and severely limited satellite access with approval and oversight.
  • Corporal
    • Compulsion Ward: The ward is usually in the form of a ring, bracelet, necklace, or headband, but is sometimes inscribed directly on the soldier's person by way of skin or, in some extreme cases, bone tattoo. The ward protects the soldier against unnatural forms of mental or emotional compulsion, such as furtive telepathy, enchantment, hypnosis, etc.
  • Sergeant
    • ECHO: Mobile shooter detection system. Can be used for any ranged weaponry from arrows (tracks trajectory), to bullets (tracks sound), to magic (tracks source of nearby distortions).
  • Lieutenant
    • Array of Inexpensive Diagnostic Sensors (AIDS): A spray solution saturated with nano-sensors. The sensors are fragile and will break after use but on contact the sensors take detailed impact analysis and send information on density, chemical structure, speed, and other variables back to the designated console before being rendered useless.

Unit

  • Rangers
    • Ercaniron Arrows: Arrow tips flecked with Ercaniron metal, which destabilizes arcane structures and causes magic and spells to go awry.
    • Hearthwood Bow: Hearthstone is a durable, mystical wood with abjuration properties. Hearthwood enchants arrows with anti-magic properties designed to dispel magic.
  • Sniper
    • Autonomous Crystal Spotter: A small crystal orb which contains cutting edge magi-tech computing power. Essentially a giant lens, the autonomous drone follows the user and relays information on acquired targets: range, elevation, wind speed and barometric pressure. Should the sniper miss, it will offer corrections in windage and lead.
  • Spy
    • Disguise Kit: Temporary (ranging from 1 hour to 1 day) alteration of epigenetic expression allowing Recon personnel to rearrange their physical features.
  • Wastelands Border Patrol
    • Vakar Weapon: Vakar does additional damage to any creature that has less than Complex sapience, in accordance with the Terrenus Creature Codex. WBP agents leverage Vakar weaponry against the Suujali and other creatures of the Wastelands in particular.

Assignments

Update: All completed threads have been moved to the main quest index and will be tracked there from now on. The below is strictly for archival purposes.

All quests have been integrated into the Terrenus Quest Index. Any quest completed for the military can count towards advancement. Any departments can take on any mission regardless of emphasis as long as the character is capable of acting in the military's best interests. Missions are Class C unless otherwise stated but the class can be raisedif the difficulty is accurately portrayed and this is made clear when canonizing.

Completed Assignments

Will only be showing most recently completed assignment. Rest are in spoiler.

ThreadThe Twilight Zone
MissionBlairville. Map a floor of The Tower
Personnel
: Renin
Results: Partial success. Renin manages to make it all the way through this particular zone of the Tower, which he dubs 'The Spooky Zone' but ultimately determined that the cost for any useful information or materials mined out of this particular zone was too high. The Spooky Zone has been labelled off-limits.

Spoiler

Thread: The ghast effect
MissionDougton. There is a 15 mile radius around a lone cabin in the woods that drains people of their energy (not enough to kill). Purify/exorcise the land.
Personnel: Hana; Delistair
Results: Success.  Hana, Delistair and other military individuals meet in Dougton to cleanse a cabin of a large-radius enfeebling effect. After arriving they meet Flora, a mysterious girl who tries to trick them with a series of powerful illusions. After managing to defeat the illusion an attempt to capture Flora destroys her in the process. Shortly after the malign energy is dispelled with Flora's disappearance, additional personnel are called in.

Thread: A deadly melody
MissionHell's Gate. The 'Broken Heart' murders make their way into Hell's Gate. FIST agent teams up with local police to investigate
Personnel: Alexander Hawk
Results: Success. Alexander successfully uncovered the fact that the murders was done by multiple people, was able to quickly dismiss the possibility of cult operations, and narrowed down the source to a musical enchantment. He has requested a quarantine over part of Hell's Gate for further investigation and to stop the disease from spreading

Thread: Investigating the corpse train
Mission: Casper. There are rumors that corpses have been dug up, and people killed to make more, and the cadavers used to either make or fuel a trackless train.
Personnel: Alexander Hawk. Xanathi Maira.
Results: Success. The corpse train is investigated and its creation successfully linked to the Tullin Brothers. A warrant is out for the Brothers.

ThreadThose Meddling Kids
MissionWeland. Investigating the second lightning rail attack that happened in Weland Gone Wild.
Personnel: Delistair Page. Xanathi Maira.
Results: Failure.  A group is sent to investigate the Lightning Rail attack, but the evidence ends up being destroyed.

Thread: Truth of Bombing
Mission:  Partial success. Hell's Gate. The city has three primary docks for airships, and one of them was destroyed in a potential terrorist attack. Rebuild the broken primary dock and/or investigate who was behind it.
Results: Success. A while ago a primary dock in the Hell's Gate airport was bombed. After the rebuild effort, Heina (Terrenus Military) and her colleague Alex began investigating the cause. They combat mercenaries dressed as fake soldiers and send collected information to Central.

Thread: Into the dark
Mission: Yh'mi. Complete Major Discovery Into the Dark quest.
Results: Success. An expedition team was sent to explore Yh'mi. They had made it from the Broken Plains to the Whitewoods successfully, making several discoveries along the way. They were overwhelmed by a mist in the Whitewoods and a large group of Chhitten and were forced to turn back.

ThreadCrush the serpent with thine heel.
Mission: Biazo Isle. A joint effort by church and military to clean up the ruins of Biazo City and weaken the presence of Unnaturals on the Isle.
Results: Success. Through a combined effort with multiple parties, and against multiple enemies, the site of Biazo City's ruins have been cleansed of the unnatural miasma. A seed of positive energy has been deposited at its center, which encourages vegetation to grow over the ruins.

ThreadShe sells seashells.
Mission: An attack on Biazo City.
Results: Partial success. Military agent prevents the destruction of thousands of souls by transporting them offshore before the attack hits but fails to prevent the attack altogether and Biazo City crumbles.

Thread: Is that poop on the deck?
Mission: Casper. Investigate the Full Deck and rumors of it housing criminal activity.
Results: Partial success. Agents of Terrenus (M. Commager, M. Xanathi, A. Petros, Sistina) investigate the Full Deck gambling cruise ship for any criminal affiliation. The ship's owners successfully cover their tracks and most of the investigation is discounted as a fruitless endeavor. Toward the end of their investigation, as the ship approached Casper harbors, an unknown party launches attacks the Full Deck using zombies, explosions, and unnatural elementals. The mission focus was redirected to saving as many civilians as possible, but ultimately the ship was tossed from the ocean by a rogue wave to land on top of and destroy some of Casper's harbors.

ThreadSowing the Seeds of Discontent
Mission: Weland. Advise both sides during a period of civil unrest.
Results: Partial success. Renin and Tamashi attempt to reach a peaceful resolution between the current regent and an unhappy populace, under the direction of the city's peacekeeper. Matters are complicated by an assassin's strike against the regent as well as the peacekeeper going MIA. Eventually military attempts to arrest the regent in order to stop him from killing his subjects, but a rogue shaman suddenly attacks and murders Taiji. There are no riots or large-scale fighting, and the objective of a peaceful transition to a new ruler is achieved, so the mission is ultimately a success despite a violent ending. Renin is still wondering what happened to the peacekeeper. Tamashi is under investigation for his involvement in the death of the regent.

ThreadAmong the Sleep
Mission: Blairville. Clear out Artifacture Tower.
Results: Success. A portion of the Tower is reclaimed by Terrenus military and it is discovered that the top of the tower has been claimed already by a wizard named Soren. The thread did not get completed properly but all parties agreed to the end-result. The military has gained a foothold into the tower, claiming the floor and basement, and look to claim the rest of it before too long.

Thread: A sellsword selling his sword
Mission: Hell's Gate. A plague brought by wererats threatens the community of Hell's Gate. This is a Quest being attended to by the military.
Results: Success. Elijah braved the sewers to find out what could be upsetting the community, and discovered rats grown fat and strong on mana. Deeper probing revealed a sort of mutated rat-man that had been the cause of all the chaos and solely responsible for the upset in the natural movement and predation patterns of the rats. Elijah turned the rat-man over to the local guard.
