Cintamani Stone

Cintamani stone

Artemis stepped onto The Rusted Corsair, the sorceress rarely visiting such places such as this. However this is where she stood. Instead of lingering in the entrance the female walked to the bar, ordering something mildly alcoholic.
Taking a seat in a dingy corner she pulled away the black hood from her head, allowing her raven dark hair to fall over her shoulders. Her gloved hands wrapped themselves around her tankard. What a sorceress was doing in a tavern she could not quite say herself, having been wandering aimlessly for a while.
She remembered little of her time before coming here, and it was a time she didn't want to remember as such. For now she only focused on how or when she could track down a relic. The Cintamani Stone. Artemis had heard of this stone through various sources and the offer of what it gave was too much to resist.
The female did not wish for gold, nor to be more powerful, for a lovely estate, she hoped and desired to restore fertility. After discovering her magical qualities she quickly discovered she could not bear children, the same went for every sorceress she came across.
A few years after honing her skills she met a man, they had loved, quarrelled but could never move their relationship forward, with no family to begin. The man was later killed in a battle and Artemis had quickly moved from location to location. So by her travels she found a means in which to restore her fertility, however, after realising the journey she would have yet to make she realised she would need more than her magical qualities, she needed someone who was confident in keeping monsters at bay, some simple ruffians perhaps.
And whatever such the place to find such people she needed for her journey to come, the Port of Veelos.

There was no point dressing modestly for a place like the Rusted Corsair, unless one was willing to dress like a beggar but to make oneself look so vulnerable was asking for trouble. So Petronella dressed as immodestly as her usually modest brain would allow.
And it worked. Oh, of course her outfit drew all sorts of whistles and cat calls, but to have everyone staring at you meant that they were the ones more likely to be robbed. Personally, Petronella thought her body left much to be desired. Her incredibly large bosom was something she usually hid under scarves and laces and caused her large amounts of discomfort, even pain. But everyone else seemed to appreciate them just fine when she revealed only half of them.
With as much grace as she could muster Petra swayed her way up to the bar, where a large man with bulging muscles in his arms offered her free drinks for the night, for nothing more than being the most beautiful woman in the Rusty Corsair. She was sure she wasn't, unless one had only one criteria (or two), but she took the drink anyway and scanned the crowd, finding a woman at one table who had shown nary an interest in the whole affair. Petra sat herself down opposite the raven haired lady, spying with her spirit eye the men behind her, if only to enjoy the look of disappoint on their faces that she had not chosen to sit with one of them. "Hello," she said, smiling genuinely this time with a broad mouth and generous lips. "My name's Petra. Please forgive rhe outfit. I dont always dress like this. You don't know me but I've heard rumours you're after something I too seek. And you might actually have the means to get it. Is it true? Do you know how to find the Cintamani Stone?"

Jasper entered the Rusty Corsair, seeking a drink. Ordering a drink at the bar, he sat at a table and sighed. It isn't the Tavern of Legend, but it'll do. Surveying the people around him, he listened for anyone who needed someone to do a job for them. Jasper paused, hearing something out of the ordinary. Did someone say the Cintamani Stone? He remembered when his brother, Edmund had asked

Hey, Jasper. D'You know anything about the Cintamani Stone?

Er... yeah, it's some fancy relic right?

Yep, and it'd be real nice if you picked it up for me while you're out... *begin puppy dog eyes*

*sigh* fine, I'll keep an eye out for it.

Focusing on the origin of the sound, he found two women sitting at a table, one of them looking rather familiar. Hm. He resumed drinking, but furtively glanced at them just in case.

Malik Smithson sipped his drink as he sat with his back to a corner. As he wasn't quite sure what was in the mug he made certain to keep his sips small. From his corner he could see most of the pub and he was not impressed with either the establishment or most of the clientele - not surprising as most of the clientele was compose of rough, surly, unscrupulous men. One notable exception to this trend was a young woman who had the courage, or foolishness, to sit at the bar. He concluded that there simply must be more to her than met the eye -  which, as an individual who was also more than he seemed, intrigued him. He was distracted from his musings by the entrance of another exception to the usual clientele, a rather well-endowed, salaciously dressed woman who, interestingly enough, seemed to have some business with the woman who's presence in this establishment had initially drawn his curiosity. He decided, in that moment, to look after these women until they were safely to their lodgings, if only because of the attention they had attracted form some of the more.... unsavory patrons. While most of these men were not foolish enough to act against the women in a public, relatively well-lit place such as this tavern, there was no knowing what they might get up to in a more secluded location if given the opportunity. He decided he had better introduce himself to them if he didn't want to be mistaken for the very sort of ruffian he would be attempting to detour. He approached the women with some difficulty as they still held the attention of the majority of the clientele, though most of said patrons were not as strong as him, and gently tapped the second one, the one who had entered the bar a few short minutes ago, on the shoulder. As she turned to face him he was very careful to keep his eyes on her face, a somewhat difficult task considering how much taller he was than her, and his hands away from either his sword or the woman he was speaking to. "Ma'am, I don't know what business you have in an establishment such as this, but I offer my services as an escort to your lodgings, however far that may be, once it is finished."

Spoiler

If Petra's spirit eye can see magical auras, Malik would have an aura of wholesomeness and elemental power.

Petra tried very hard not to flinch when tapped on the shoulder. Turning as casually as she could manage, she was confronted with the sight of a giant of a man, unshaven and with arms full of muscle. "Thank you, good sir," she said with her bravest voice. "That's very generous of you. I will find you when our business here is concluded. Would you please mind giving we women some privacy?" She smiled up at him, making a study of his face. It always paid to show one was interested. And to his credit he was able to maintain eye contact, too.

Artemis violet eyes glanced at a rather unusually dressed woman, not sure why on earth that anyone would choose to dress in such a way in a place such as this. Her lips forming into a frown. Artemis was a vain woman, and whilst she did dress to usually accentuate her figure she kept herself covered up.

And always wearing black, she wore a dark blouse, with a black corset that held some small floral patterns of white, the sleeves from the blouse were rather puffy however mostly covered by the over elbow black gloves. She even wore corseted leggings with hints of dark blue down the seems to finally finish at black over the knee boots. Whilst she did receive looks from men, and in some cases women, it was nothing like the looks this woman in front of her was getting.

"I'm not sure which is more concerning, the fact that you've heard of what I seek or that you've dressed yourself like a tasty meal for the men in this establishment" she muttered, her tone cool as it generally was when talking to strangers. Although she did consider herself that she had heard of the Cintamani stone through others, she was more surprised that this woman and heard of herself chasing this rumored relic.

Her eyes then focused on a male that approached, expecting some grotesque offer as he spoke to the immoderate dressed woman. However his offer to be so chivalrous made her suspicious.

Watching the large man offer his service to the seated women, Jasper chuckled inwardly. Escort? These women look like they could take care of themselves. He was about to get up and leave when he realized what his brother would say if he found out Jasper had passed up a lead on the Cintamani Stone. Sighing, he gathered his courage then rose from his chair and walked to the table where the stranger and what was her name again? Pepper, Pat... Petra! sat. Casually, he turned to the stranger and stuck out his hand. "Jasper Shade, nice to meet you. What were you saying about the Cintamani Stone?"

Malik was glad that at least one of the women seemed willing to trust him. While he was fully aware of the other lady's skepticism, she was the one he was least worried about. So as not to prolong the moment into uncomfortable territory, he did as requested and moved two stools down the bar in order to give the ladies their privacy. As he took his seat he noticed another man move towards them. The other individual did not seem to be moving aggressively, so Malik resolved to merely keep an eye on him. Glancing around the room, Malik noticed that several slimy characters glaring at him. Smiling, he raised his mug towards the men, took another sip, grimaced at the taste and decided that his initial choice to avoid alcohol had been correct. He placed his mug on the counter and went back to people watching.

Spoiler

I'm going to leave it up to you guys and/or girls to determine whether the patrons actually turn hostile or not and what form that hostility takes.

"When all eyes are on the spider, the spiderlings can do their work," Petra said, then glanced sideways into the crowd. A boy of small stature, perhaps eight or ten, was busily pushing between the crowd of onlookers, shoving something that looked like a leather wallet under his tunic before slipping between a bare-chested sailor and a bearded man in a long coat. "It looks good when it works, doesn't it? It becomes painful when they're caught and I have to bribe the tavern's guards to let him go. Anyway, you-"

Just then another man sat down, introducing himself as Jasper. When he mentioned the Cintamani stone as well she felt a little bit of horror - had they been speaking that loudly? And how did he know what it was?"

Only then did it occur to her: he probably didn't. Most likely, he'd just overheard a part of the conversation and decided to participate.

"And what is this Cintamani stone, good sir?" she said. This ought to be good.

"Eh, I don't really know much about it, just that it's some fancy magical relic and my brother really, really wants it." He chuckled. "I was actually hoping you would know something about it."

Artemis smirked and turned her face away from the group "You won't get it if your brother wants it, that's not how the stone works" she muttered, folding her arms, leaning against the table she focused her gaze on Jasper "The cintamani stone grants wishes, one wishes to each that holds it, and the wishes need to be thought out very carefully and specifically otherwise you could end up with your wish and not in the way you desired it so" she spoke. Artemis was now certain that more than one fool went after the stone on someone's else behave and came back empty handed.

Seeing as it had remained in it's possible location.

"...and how does that prevent you from finding it for another person? Also, how is it so famous if nobody has seemed to have found it?" He was pretty sure he said something dumb, but Jasper figured it was worth asking. Noticing the many other customers eyeing him, he hurriedly said "But of course, perhaps I'll just leave the stone." then moved back to his table. Ordering another drink, Jasper winced at the thought of telling Ed he had decided not to look for the Cintamani Stone.

"Well. It turns out dressing as such has disadvantages after all. It seems to improve men's hearing," Petronella said quietly. "Anyway, I found you to make a deal. I have resources. Not limitless but considerable. If you truly know where the stone is then I can help you get there. If not then I can help in the search for information. Information is my speciality." She smiled as modestly as she could, given her recent successes and swelling ego - which she was quite consciously trying to suppress, for egos made mistakes in this game. "And if it helps I won't dress immodestly again. Unless the situation really calls for it. I know we have very little reason to trust one another, so if you need some time to think about it, I understand."

She pushed back her chair, but then the musclebound brute sent a message her way. She looked at him curiously then, when it became obvious what he was doing, she stood quickly, grabbing Jasper by the arm. "You could escort a good lady home, couldn't you, sir?" then she hurried towards the door, glancing behind her to make sure Artemis was safe. On her way out she grabbed the boy's collar and said, "Tell her to meet me at the Blue Eagle on Chandler street, if she needs me." Then she stepped out into the cold, glancing back to see if Jasper - or perhaps Artemis - had decided to follow.

(This was before Uschi's most recent post originally.)

Malik turned and glared at the man. While he knew his cavalier attitude wasn't exactly helping, this fool seriously needed to turn his volume down! While Malik had no idea what this stone was, the very nature of the conversation made it clear that it was something of great power, value, or both. Even honorable men were dangerous when wealth or power were dangled in front of their faces and this idiot had practically bated the entire bar! Grimly, Malik set his right hand on his sword hilt. He used his magic to subtly, carefully, call up a bit of breeze. He whispered into the breeze and commanded it to take his words to the woman he had spoken with and no one else. "Your friend has just painted targets on the three of you, or the four of us as it seems to be, that these people won't ignore," he said in a calm soothing tone. "I strongly suggest you convince your friend to vacate the premises immediately. I'll provide as much of a distraction as possible." After giving the woman a moment to communicate with her group, he drew his sword, stood up, and, slurring and swaying, sang as loud as he knew how.

"Hey ho to the bottle I go!" He belted out, words barely lyrical through his affected slur, "To heal my heart and drown my woe," he nearly shouted while waving his sword around as drunkenly as he could without actually hitting anyone. At this point the attention of the entire establishment was on him. Now, as some of the patrons began moving towards him with the intent to subdue him, was the group's chance to get away. Abruptly, so as to keep his distractible audience's focus on him, he slowed his movements, dropped his sword to the floor, lowered his volume, and stretched the slur into his words even more. "The rain may fall," accompanied by a deep sway that nearly toppled him over, "the winds may blow," a stumble directly into a group of customers who had begun to look away, "but there still be" now he slumped down and fell to his knees as if too tired to remain standing, "many miles to go." As he finished his wildly off-tune tune, he quickly glanced over to where the women had been sitting hoping not to see them there.....

"Er- of course." Rising from his chair Jasper followed Petra, weaving through the the tables. As he walked over, he thought about this stone that the woman was so interested in. He knew that it had some power, but the ability to change reality with a wish was something else! Knowing Edmund, he'd probably ask for a customer for once. Snickering silently, Jasper finally made it out of the building. Turning to Petra, he asked nervously- "So, where are you staying? You can lead the way."
