Terrenus Artifacts [updated]

Recommended Posts

STATUS - WIP

Since the old thread was made in 2012 and the software manages old threads updated over many years poorly, I'm making a new artifact thread. I'm also using this opportunity to trim down the number of artifacts so as to make them more significant and allow room for potential future expansion. This will be a gradual work, so keep an eye on the first line of this post. When it says complete is when I'm actually done

Any currently held artifacts deprecated in power will still retain their attributes and still be treated as significant in ability due to the canonized content behind them

In Progress

Name and Origins - Right and Left Gauntlets of Zengi

Zengi is a historical paradox, as enigmatic as he was infamous. What little is known of this figure, pulled together from analysis ancient texts and oral histories, depicts Zengi as having humble beginnings 5000 years ago. He belonged to a family of potters and was himself unremarkable at the craft. After falling into, and consequently waking from, a sudden comatose state, Zengi is said to have accessed the infinite realm of the gods and was consumed by a thirst for knowledge unmatched by his family, his peers, or his so-called superiors.

Sacrificing his body for the powers of the mind, Zengi etched himself into the stone tablets of history as one of the very first living people to volunteer himself into the life of the Unnatural, rather than have it forced on him by means of curse or ill fortune. Zengi immersed himself completely into the darkest arts of necromancy, and from the moment he unlocked the secret to shedding his mortal coil and taking up the crown of 'necromantic apotheosis', Zengi has loved only destruction. It his gift to the world, to help end its struggle.

These are two of his tools.

Makeup and Construction

The gauntlets are an ultra-black metal of unknown origin.

Powers and Abilities

Zengi's Gauntlets act as extremely potent necromantic foci, greatly amplifying existing ability or bestowing a terrific ability for it where it otherwise does not exist. No man has owned both gauntlets at the same time since Zengi himself perished, until Alexander Endriel took Zengi into his own form and claimed both gauntlets (the one to wield both gauntlets was Zengi, through Alexander, keeping the chain of custody intact).

The gauntlets have since been again divided.

History - present to past

  1. Right: A weapon of power [owned by Lilith (Ataraxy)]; S class
  2. Left: Walking a dangerous path [owned by Dove (Mag) - traded to Jericho (supernal)]; S class
  3. The gauntlets are scattered over Terrenus
  4. Both gauntlets are owned by Alexander Endriel [King]
  5. Fulminating Culmination: The right gauntlet was transferred from Arthur [supernal] to Alexander [King]

Name and Origins - Ghost Pouch

Sometimes referred to as 'the keening void consumes all souls', the pouch is rumored to have belonged to Peter the Dark, the same entity rumored to have owned, and possibly even created, the dark rod which has permanently plunged the Dark Forest into shadow.

Located in Haunted Glen

Makeup and Construction

The Ghost Pouch appears as nothing more than a simple burlap satchel. When it is opened, it howls and keens like the baying of a hundred wolves, and on occasion surrounds its owner with a faint greenish whirlwind.

Powers and Abilities

The pouch is capable of taking a stored ghost and transposing one of its abilities or skills onto its owner.

The pouch also allows the owner to take ownership of nearby ghosts and spectral centers (haunted houses, graveyards, etc) and manipulate them.

The owner can force ghosts to possess inanimate items, fresh corpses, and can direct multiple ghouls at once with a maximum of 10, but doing so renders a great physical strain on the holder.

The owner can attempt to take over a living person (successful with most NPCs; success on players depends on the character), with a much more limited scope of action and ability.

Name and Origins - Rod of Peter the Dark

Makeup and Construction

The rod is the length and thickness of a human humerus (upper arm bone). It is made of a single, unbroken piece of bleached ivory and speckled throughout with bright yellow sapphire. It's sunny disposition, in spite of its creator and history, is said to come from all of the light that is has stolen from the world and trapped inside of itself.

Powers and Abilities

The rod grants the user an expert degree in umbramancy, the ability to manipulate shadows and to use shadow-based magic. In order to manipulate the shadows, they must be clearly defined shapes. The owner of the rod has more available shadow material in a city at night than in a lightless cave.

The holder can form shadows on his person like armor, or fashion weapons from available shadows. The holder can create barriers, platforms, and even construction-less tunnels into and out of buildings. The owner can see perfectly in the night and, with concentration, can make themselves intangible or use shadows as a gateway for high-speed transportation.

Use of the rod exacts a toll. For the first month any physical contact with the rod's material elicits a strong sensation of both pleasure and pain. After the month, so hold as the owner has the rod on their person, they experience a dull but constant and unpleasant throb in their head, stomach, and groin. The rod generates obsession, either enhancing an existing obsession to dangerous levels or causing the owner to become obsessed with something at random. Whatever the obsession the owner inevitably comes to the conclusion that the only way to satisfy their obsession is to spread darkness to the world.

Name and Origins - Chalice of Jason of the Lions

Located in Ponkapoag Lake.

Makeup and Construction

The chalice of made of gold with inlaid bands of galvanized platinum, an iridium rim, and an obsidian base. By all accounts the chalice appears impossible to take apart or smelt. It is made of a number of very precious metals, bulky, and heavy, which means anyone carrying it makes themselves an instant target and so requires more stealth than usual to keep on one's person.

Powers and Abilities

It requires two hands to lift and emits day light capable of harming vampires and dispelling darkness-based spells whose area it enters, including the Dark Forest and the shadows generated by the rod of Peter the Dark. Twice a day the Chalice will create its own water (16 oz). The water is sky blue, streaked with clouds, and can be used to heal critical wounds, cure diseases, and neutralize poisons.

This water cannot be saved or stored outside of the chalice for more than 24 hours in any way.

Name and Origins - Sable’s Blade

Sable’s Blade is an artifact from ancient Terrenus which once belonged to a paladin named Sable who sought Gaia’s blessing to slay an eleven-headed hydra and end its reign of terror on banks of the Ponkapoag River.

Makeup and Construction

The blade is an old and decrepit great sword with a chipped edge caked in rust. In spite of its tarnished appearance, the weapon radiates a powerful magic aura, is a masterwork weapon in terms of durability and keenness of edge.

Update: Since being claimed by Ruiser Tenth, the sword has been polished and restored. Sable's blade is now a clean, matte obsidian.

Powers and Abilities

Sable's blade is enchanted with beast slaying capabilities of legendary quality, akin to Vakar but of a much greater magnitude. It is said to have been blessed by Gaia herself, and so there is no hide this blade cannot pierce, no monster’s bone it cannot slice, and no creature it cannot kill.

Name and Origins - The Eyes of Mogonto

Mogonto was an ancient shamaness and known associate of Herbie the Sage. The recluse Mogonto was fascinated by secrets and ciphers, and quickly built a legacy for herself as a master diviner. Lore holds that there was no secret which could escape Mogonto if she made a concerted effort to uncover it, and was also noted for her unparalleled expertise in warding against all known forms of scrying, remote-viewing, and more exotic forms of divination.

Makeup and Construction

Right eye: A brilliant gem in the center of a platinum pendant, the size of a quail egg and resembling a fire opal in terms of its nearly luminous, iridescent quality. The notable deviation from this aesthetic is in the flecks of ultra-pink peppered all through it.

Left eye: A rough chunk of taaffeite. Mute purple in color and completely cloudy in terms of clarity. This eye is the size of a fist and unrefined, its every edge jagged and misshapen.

Powers and Abilities

The Right Eye is capable of imbuing its wielder with the power to ask questions of the Oracle with no sacrifice, and virtually always guarantee an answer.

The Left Eye is capable of protecting its wielder from nearly any form of divination, though it does not protect against mundane observation and tracking methods. It is said that the Left Eye can prevent even the Oracle from finding the wielder.

History - present to past

  • I have no eye - Right eye [owned by Evelyn (supernal)]; Class B

Name and Origins - The Lion's Lantern
This wrought-iron and rune-inscribed lantern is visibly ancient. Those familiar with its lore know that it comes from a time when a renegade group of great heroes known as the Lions roamed the face of Terrenus.

Makeup and Construction
The lantern is wrought-iron with silver inlay and studded with gems selected for their ability to conduct arcane energy rather than their decorative value; the result is a lantern with a unique aesthetic, if a little motley and garish.

The silver inlays which make up the four spines connecting the lantern's top and bottom are inscribed on all sides and throughout a hollow, liquid filled center with the alphabet of an ancient tongue. The liquid is holy water blessed by a dozen priests.

The inside walls are silver polished to a high luster, incapable of being tarnished and acting as a mirror reflecting and reinforcing the lantern's holy light. The slats which cover the sides of the lantern can be brought up one at a time or on all four sides at once. The fewer slats open at once, the more the light bounces on the inside. Opening more slats increases the radius but decreases the potency of the beam.

The inside is a holy flame that burns without material, which is powered by the righteousness of its wielder though it never falls below a dim, guttering flame. When all slats are closed the lantern is tight and admits no light. The wicked are incapable of drawing more than a dim and powerless light from the lantern.

Powers and Abilities
Holy Light: When all slats are opened, the lantern sheds holy light for a radius of 30 feet. Any unnatural (or undead or dark necromancy) creatures immediately begin taking damage.

Radiant Beam: When only one slat is opened, the holy light bounces around inside the lantern against the holy mirrors and grows in intensity, capable of reaching a range of 120 feet and scorching the unnatural.

Spiritual Weapon: Twice per day and for a period of 6 hours, a weapon of the wielder's choice made  of the holy light can be pulled from the lantern and wielded as a physical construct.
