Agent Dionysus of the Order of Force Majeure

There had been rumors of a feral beast lurking in the Great Pine Forests. The strange claw marks on the trees, as well as the abnormally sized footprints in the ground, gave a lot of weight to said rumors.

Dionysus had begun tracking the beast on this very day. Zipping through the forest like a gust of wind, he covered miles upon miles in mere hours. As the day drew to a close and the sun dipped over the horizon, he felt a sense of unexplainable uneasiness. The forest was quiet, too quiet. It was as if the wildlife was afraid of angering something. But it was odd, as he hadn't seen any sort of cave or dwelling that could house such a creature.

As night fell upon him, he was almost completely convinced that he had been after a wild goose. And then, he heard a rapid rustling in the bushes, stopping him in his tracks.

Welfrick Erhard Jagdhund — The Shadowbeast

The air was crisp and the woods below were as silent — a perfect night to go on the prowl. Did the hunter think that his measly chains could chain him, the beast down forever? Never again, he thought. Bounding down the cliffs of Dresden Peaks at breakneck speeds, Welfrick made his way down. At this point, he knew every creak and crevice in the damned mountain, climbing down every so often. He was lucky that Raveena had been so kind to him, just like that one night....

Looking back up to the mountain, the beast lamented. Oh how dearly he wanted to raze Hyperion, but even he understood it was not his to destroy. No. It was her's — the Empath's home.

He could never harm something that she, his one and only friend, made.

Still, his longing for flesh was raging, and with a toothy smirk, landed in the woods below. There was a caveat to all of this. While he wouldn't harm her people, the people around the mountain were fair game, were they not? Damned hunters... the blasted creatures be damned.

Yes... he would kill them all.

Ears perked at the sound — a twig cracking. Stopping, he raised his nose to the air, and inhaled. It was the scent of man.

He licked his lips in eager anticipation, clawed fingers extended, twitching restlessly.

"Found you," he snarled, looking in the direction of the hidden figure.

Agent Dionysus of the Order of Force Majeure

Pause.

With the darkness of night looming over him, Dionysus allowed his useless senses to dull away. His keen elven ears twitched about like radars. As the sound came closer, his eyes shot open as whatever prowled these woods in the dead of the night came within five meters of him. With a spur of his heels, he dug his feet into the bark of a nearby tree, rapidly scaling it in a bid to create vertical distance. When he had reached the top, he perched silently in the middle of several branches, watching, smelling, but always listening.

Welfrick Erhard Jagdhund — The Shadowbeast

Catching sight of the elf retreating into the canopy, Welfrick couldn't help but smile. There was no escape anyways, so it made Welfrick wonder why even bother.

"Why are you running?"

His query would hide in a tree like wild game? Fine. He would play the creature's silly little game. It was the chase that made these things more fun.

Running up the nearest tree, he pierced the thick, mottled lumber of the young pine's trunk, and like a spring, threw himself up from branch to branch, all the while gathering every bit of information his eyes, ears, and nose could gather. Stretching his limbs, he identified the target's location.

At a moment's notice, he would lunge at the man. He probably thought himself clever, but these were not this man's woods. No. These were his.

The violent rustle of the leaves was an obvious sign of an imminent attack. With no idea of what he was going up against and what his enemy was trying to do, Dionysus' foremost goal was to create distance to analyze the situation. Stepping heavily onto a branch, he leaned the tree that he was on towards the next. The leaves of the two trees connected, and that was all that he needed to make his move in the pitch darkness. Scanning for the solid outlines of the foliage, he planned his route before dashing across the connected surface of the leaves.

Feet (Haste)
When necessary, Dionysus may concentrate all the energy in his body into a single point below the ball of each foot. He has mastered the ability to alternate the energy between both feet with each step he takes. This allows him to travel at incredible speeds with almost no limit. The only drawback is that his senses do not keep up with his feet, and any collision at that velocity could be fatal.

In a split second, he found himself in a spot seven trees away from his initial location. He squinted his eyes back at where he once was. A black object ploughed into the branches where he previously stood. It was a close call.

For now, he would have to play as the prey. Master James had taught him the importance of evaluating the enemy before the battle, and he intended to use that advice to its fullest extent.

Welfrick Erhard Jagdhund — The Shadowbeast

Was the elf not going to attack? His movements were graceful, nimble, and yet with every pause, the beast couldn't help but get the uncanny feeling he had been in this situation before. The man knew where he was, but did not flee. Instead, he moved, then stopped. Moved, then stopped, always looking in the shadowbeast's direction. This one was not like the others.

The hunter was not running from him — the hunter was leading him.

Eyes narrowed at the silhouette retreating into the distance as fragmented memories filtered their way back into view:

If Corvinus could see her now. Her pale flesh rippled with goosebumps, the cold penetrating deep to her bones. Cascading waves of ebony draped along her shoulders, curling at the small of her back, the burning gaze obscured by bangs falling into place. The world was alive and awake, calling for unbidden notions. Stirring a wildness, invoking a sense of freedom within the woman, appealing to her untamed nature.

Hunt the hunter, she seemed to dare.

Running across the branch, Welfrick leaped towards the man with even greater fervor than before.

Yes. He wanted to relive that night. Relive the same experience.

Bounding from tree to tree, he eventually ended in a spot just above the elf. His lurid green eyes flashed in the pale, winter moonlight, burning with excitement as they focused in. Looking down, gnashing his teeth, and sinking his claws into the bark, he greeted his prey with simple words.

"Don't disappoint me."

This would be fun.

Welfrick Erhard Jagdhund — The Shadowbeast

From his spot perched up above the hunter, he wasn't going wait for the man to look up.

Running his claw along his silver-scaled arm, he cut through and beneath to the flesh below, letting the crimson blood seep out from the fresh wound. Then, bringing his forearm up, he let his tongue slide across the fresh wound, much like a grooming mongrel, and remembered the taste of blood, all while eyeing the elf below with gluttonous eyes. In his throat, the blood gestated, transformed, dissolved, and eventually was sacrificed as catalyst for what was to come.

"YoU'RE mINe!" he howled, suddenly jumping down from the branch above, descending upon the man below.

The sudden roar from above Dionysus did not go unnoticed. Whatever it was that he was hunting, it was fast. He would just have to be faster.

As branches were torn off the tree from Welfrick's downwards movement, Dionysus took the chance to regain his footing. Digging his feet into the trunk of the tree, he dashed back onto the ground, before stopping at the base of the tree for a quick establishment of his surroundings. Ten meters away, he saw an open area between the trees. A second later, he was there, gasping for breath as the shadowbeast plunged through the treeline.

Welfrick Erhard Jagdhund — The Shadowbeast

The elf was quick, but Welfrick was quicker.

Mirroring the elf's movement, he followed the man, albeit with less grace. Instead of leaping down, he crashed through the treeline, landing on the ground below on all fours, before heading in the direction of his query. Follow the scent, he thought, follow the scent. At this point, the man's odor was unmistakable. There was no escape now. No matter where the man would escape, there was no place to go in these woods, no place to hide.

He would follow, and slowly but surely, the ground grew brighter as the trees grew more sparse.

A glade. Was this where the man planned to lead him?

Stopping at the edge of the forest's perimeter, he circled the man, eyeing his every move like a predator did with its prey. Welfrick's mouth grew wet as the thought of the man's squirming body clamped between the beast's jaws came into imagination.

His throat grew heavy with intangible weight, arcane magicks imbued into a soundless sound — one which would rattle the Great Pines for miles.

In fact, Dionysus had actually led Welfrick to... Nowhere. His intention had never been to implicate the common folk in his affairs, and now would be no different. Slowing to a mere walking pace, he dragged his feet softly across the floor, such that every step was audible to his foe. He wanted Welfrick to know that he wasn't afraid to stand his ground, nor would he be reluctant to. Bending his knees slightly, he began to crouch walk, his knees appearing to be locked in place like a pair of stilts. He raised his arms in defense, fanning both of his palms open with his fingers connected. His limbs were the gears. His body was the pivot. He was a machine, one that would bring death to whatever stalked him at this very moment.

Welfrick Erhard Jagdhund — The Shadowbeast

No fear? The man was foolish, yes, to stand up to the shadowbeast. Crouching beneath the grass, the beast waited for the right moment to strike. The man stood still with arms raised in defense in such a feeble effort to protect himself. It was almost endearing. He was but a lone fawn in the middle of the circle, and fawns would have done best not to come at night.

Eyes widened as he saw his opportunity, and without hesitation, he ducked under the cover of the tall grass, and shot through the dark, zigzagging back and forth wildly.

Would the man be able to follow his moves? Welfrick thought not.

The man was but mere feet from him, and the beast had the initiative. His long, prehensile tale extended out in one direction as the beast's main body went the other. The man would see Welfrick's claws, but would he see it all?

Stagger.

Shooting his right heel backward to catch himself, Dionysus leaned back as the creature lunged at him from his side. Fully committing to the dodge, his other knee bent back as well as he thrust his pelvis forward to compensate for the lack of balance. He bent over backward, his body temporarily becoming parallel with the ground. As Welfrick's claws sailed over him, the muscles in his knees tensed up. Then, his body straightened like a spring, his right palm delivering a powerful chop to the creature's spine.

Welfrick Erhard Jagdhund — The Shadowbeast

With a twist of the body, the beast turned mid air, taking the punch as a glancing blow by flowing with the impact. As a result, the forward momentum of the strike was converted into rotational movement, taking most of the brunt out of the man's attack. Spinning twice in the air, he no longer could attack with his tail as planned, but the beast had an even better idea. Reflexively, he held his arm out, hooking the hunter in with arm, carrying the fool with him as he sailed forward through the air.

This was the first time he got a real look at the elf.

The man looked quite tasty.

Within moments, the two hit the ground, and somehow the man had tumbled from his grasp. Rolling on the floor, Welfrick ducked low and returned into a crouched position, the man now mere feet in front of him.

Now would be the time to strike, he thought, ready to pounce straight at the downed prey.

Maybe some notion of having sharp claws would have convinced Welfrick that grabbing Dionysus was a good idea. But while his feet were still planted on the ground, he needn't bend to such notions. As Welfrick turned to strike, he would find himself facing empty ground, the elf standing several meters away with his arms folded. At the very most, his clothing would have been torn, and Welfrick's claws would have been laced with nanites torn from his inner suit. The elf had allowed himself to be dragged for a brief second before accelerating in his assailant's target direction. This allowed him to break free of his grasp and suddenly jerk to the side, completely freeing himself from the shadowbeast's path of destruction.

Nonetheless, Dionysus was very much unscathed and very much still a threat.

Welfrick Erhard Jagdhund — The Shadowbeast

The moonlight painted the battlefield in ghostly hues, highlighting the two figures in their waltz of death in the forest clearing. Lying low to the ground, Welfrick was now hidden below the cover of the tall grass once more. His prey was nimble, dexterous, and was clearly no stranger to battle. That much was clear from the very few interactions he had with the shadowbeast. He did not felt the man's punch earlier, but the sudden soreness in his chest made it apparent that it had penetrated Welfrick's defenses. The blow which passed straight through toughened skin and kneaded muscle would have been enough to kill any normal man, and now the beast was certain that this man was a worthy adversary.

Perhaps it was time to show the man why men in these woods fear the dark, he thought.

Slowly, Welfrick opened his mouth, a small sphere of pitch black miasma forming between his teeth. As the orb of dark magic intensified, nearby grass began to shrivel and die, all such life being pulled out and absorbed by the foci.

Finally, when the spell reached its critical mass, the shadowbeast let out a piercing howl which pierced through the night. From his maw, a blast of shadowy fog went shooting across the field headed straight in the direction of the elven brawler, cutting through grass with its curse of decay.

Spoiler

UMBRAL FURY:

PREPARATION TIME: 1-5 posts (depends on strength)

REQUIREMENTS: he has to be transformed during the preparation period, Welfrick has reduced mobility requires blood as a catalyst

DESCRIPTION: A foci of dark magic begins to charge within the beast's throat, until releasing into an explosive burst. Unlike most magic, this one is a spell which harms only the flesh -- inducing decay and degradation of the mortal body. While it does not physically damage anything, it still contains momentum -- and thus can push objects with significant strength depending on how long it was charging. Spells to ward off such an occurrence would include barriers of light (must be strong enough to not be consumed by the spell; e.g. a candle vs. a raging fire), holy wards, and other reasonable spell-shields. However, there must be some light for this spell to be of use as shadows require some illumination to take form
