The space in front of their ruined chapel was chosen for the ceremony. A fissure tore across the small square and snaked into the chapel - a painful wound left from the day Remissio led an army against them. Promotions were usually a private affair, but with all the manpower and resources put into restoring the wall, the chapel’s restoration had been put aside for now. Their devotion to Gaia would not be made any less by the loss of a mere building.

The ceremony was attended by more people than expected. The successful restoration of the wall, and, more so, the driving back of Yh’mi’s creatures raised the spirits of those in Inns’th. Coupled with the arrival of help from Aligoria and from House Uldwar, smiles could finally be seen on the faces of the fighters and builders gathered. Their numbers were still small, but more were expected to arrive as part of the A.N.T. Treaty.

Hopes and expectations soared, and even the usually solemn mood among the White Hand paladins seemed to have lifted for the moment. The dozen or so of them stood in two proud rows, their cleaned armour gleaming. Even the aged Chastity was clad in his full armour today, foregoing the comfort of his usual robe. He waited at the front in between the two rows of paladins.

Cheers went up as Tor’Gal arrived. Today was the day the half-orc’s valiance and leadership in battle would be recognized.

They were so close to desteuction, Tor’Gal had believed for a moment that it was all over for the people of Terrenus. In the thickest of the darkness, hope prevailed, and they were delivered from the hands of evil. Now he was being recognized for his part in the defense, and he wasn't sure how he felt about it. All he knew was that in this moment, it was best to accept what he had coming to him, with dignity and grace.

At the sound of cheers, the half orc could not help but smile somewhat. His armor was so damaged during the fight, it was unusable for the ceremony, especially with his arm in a sling. Battle had its costs, and he paid for it, with blood, broken bones and sweat.

Kneeling before Chastity, Tor’Gal could appreciate the warmth of the victory washing over him. This was the day that he was recognized, that he would be known as one of the heroes who saved all of Terrenus.

Chastity’s milky white eyes regarded the half-orc kneeling in front of him. When Tor’Gall had first come to Yh’mi, he had a conflicted past, the two sides of his blood warring. Now his spirit had grown in battle. He was not yet at peace with himself, but his devotion to protecting the people had honed his two halves to a fine point that devastated their enemies. The old paladin was pleased with what he saw, but at the same time he sensed a budding seed in the half-orc, a seed that could either bloom into a vestal of pride and confidence, or a vessel of arrogance.

His face was serene as he held Tor’Gall’s sword with two hands, palm up. The small crowd fell silent.

“Tor’Gall, of the Order of the White Hand,” Chastity addressed him steadily. He had no need to raise his voice to be audible to those gathered. “You have showed great strength in battle, protecting our people and nation. Working with Sir Gamesly of Uldwar and Sir Gormaric Warmoon, you have bested our enemies and drove them away so we may continue the fight.” He paused here, using the silence as a solemn emphasis on what he would say next.

“The battle is far from over. Your road onward is fraught with difficulties, as it is for all of us, but when we stand united, we stand a chance against the evils of Yh’mi. We have need of your blade to lead our people to victory. You will stand at the front of our defence, fearless but dependable, tough but compassionate. You will be the first into battlefield, and the last to leave. You must never forget your duty to Gaia and to our people, at both your darkest and brightest hours. Do you accept this, Tor’Gall?” Chastity held out the blade. If the half-orc took it, he would be accepting his promotion to be one of the leaders among the paladins, as a trusted authority to command them and the people of Inns’th.

The crowd cheered in agreement, and some of the White Hand paladins smiled. They had needed this, a lift in spirits against the oppressive atmosphere of Yh’mi.

The plans for the taking of the Furthest Point was already underway now that the wall had been repaired. Fidelitas had been chosen to lead the first of their forces to the hill. At the same time, new tents were being erected to house the numerous factions arriving from all over Terrenus.

Hopes for the success of driving back the darkness of Yh’mi had never ran as high as now.

But there were still mysteries of Yh’mi that had yet to be discovered...

Summary

Tor’Gall of the White Hand has been promoted to a higher-order paladin. It gives him authority over the regular paladins in Yh’mi, and also positions him as a respected person among the fighters in Inns’th.
