Assassins of Kings (Nede)

Recommended Posts

Nede.

Back when he was a boy he had read about that fabled land in the pages of a book taken from the body of an unfortunate passerby. A land a million acres long, presided over by gods and goddesses who shaped reality simply by being. Nothing lasts forever though, and the Garden eventually fell to ruin. Ankou knew better than most that such stories often contained  a kernel of truth. Stories about him for example had spread throughout the world after he had chosen to disappear. But while he would never outright dismiss the legends, he never thought that he would stand on its shores.

Yet here he was.

Desolation was aptly named, as there was naught but desert as far as the eye could see. The skies were dark, and despite the sandy surroundings, there was a slight chill in the air. Though there seemed to be nothing for miles around, Ankou knew he felt something shift as soon as he had set foot here. The Lord of this place undoubtedly knew he was here.  The necromancer had no doubt that the ancient being would act soon enough.

"Let's get moving," he said to his companions.

"Right behind ya," the heavily scarred woman spoke with an excited grin on her disfigured face. The woman was Sera, one of Ankou' supposed "acquaintances." Their little cult was mostly inactive for months, especially when their leader and found was nowhere to be found. Still, with Ankou needing of their help, Sera had to come. It's not every day that she get to fight demons within a dungeon.

"Let's kill these fuckers! Drinks are on me after we murder them all"

"Eh?" another woman blurted out. This time it was the little girl known as Khaki. "You paying for the drinks? Yay! Yay!"

The little girl jumped up and down out of sheer bliss. It's not everyday that someone is willing to give her free alcohol. It did not take long for her to calm down. A few moments of happiness easily replaced with the cold hard stare of one prepared to die in the face of overwhelming odds.

"This might take a while."

The last person of the trio of woman was the Mistress. Unlike the two, she was silent, perhaps in pensive move. Her lips were pursed in thought, the ever present stick of cigar on the fingers of a dainty hand.

She simply nodded to her friend, Ankou and then remained quiet despite the healthy conversation happening around her.

Soon. She told herself. Soon it begins.

Ankou didn't waste anymore time talking; and started to move further into the vast desert. For hours the group walked yet the scenery remained the same; barren, desolate land stretching for miles in all directions. If he had been relying solely on visual cues to navigate the wasteland then he would have no idea where he was. Truthfully, he still didn't know where he was. But the presence he had sensed upon arrival would grow stronger or weaker depending on which way he went. Using this, he would simply travel in the direction that caused the presence to grow stronger. Given how little there was out here, it seemed a sound strategy.

Noon soon came, and the necromancer brought the group to a halt so that they could take a rest. After resting for a few moments on  the sand, he hovered into the air to get a better look at their surroundings. To the east, he finally spotted some kind of structure stretching into the sky. From here it was barely a dot on the horizon, but it was something at least. He looked down to call out to his companions, and his blood froze.

Emerging from the sand were three skeletons, bones bleached white by time and exposure, emerging from the sand behind his resting comrades. Flying full speed towards them, he shouted a warning.

"BEHIND YOU!"

SERA MAVAJO

Skeletons. Clearly non-threatening adversaries but it is always best to be prepared. How on earth did these things bypass her senses was something not even Sera can answer. There is something at work. Something else. Still, she needed to response so she steered clear of the way of the flying skeletons by dodging to the side and instead whipped out her own blade in an upward arc to cut at the skeletons mid-section.

Spoiler

Khakina Khatun

Meanwhile, Khaki was not so fortunate as the skeleton almost caught her but she managed to roll away in time. Her hands quickly reached for her blades due to reflex and soon there are a pair of wicked swords in her hands. Brandishing her weapons, she jumped at the bloody thing before it can escape and unleashed a flurry of blows.

Spoiler

THE MISTRESS

As for the Mistress, she's nonchalant as usual but was mostly bluffing as the skeleton did clip her a bit but she mostly ignored it. Superficial wounds are nothing to worry about as she heals faster than most. Unlike the other two, she would retaliate with a punch at the skeleton hoping a single blow would be enough to destroy it.

Sera's blade sliced up through the skeletons torso in a slash that would have spilled a living mans organs onto the sandy ground. Unfortunately, the being had no such flesh to rend; but the strike still sheered off the right side of the creatures upper body. The undead fighting Khaki was surprisingly quick, dodging most of the young women's strikes. As it lunged to attack though, it misjudged, and her blades cut a clean slice out of its skull. Finally, the Mistresses punch connected, sending spiderwebs of cracks racing across its ribcage. The skeletal enemy managed to hop back and lessen the impact enough to survive.

Ankou watched with quiet interest as the battle unfolded before him. Like Sera, he also wondered at how the creatures could slip past their collective senses to take them by surprise. Closing his eyes, he reached out to the Mind Stone in his body, searching for answers. That was when he felt it; a presence, faint, but undeniable. Following the thread of consciousness was difficult, but he managed to glimpse a great tower jutting up out of the dunes. Within he could sense the presence of its lord before he snapped back to his own body.

"So that's what it is."

The trio turned to look at Ankou. Their faces are filled with worry. No one seemed inclined to speak however but Khaki had to ask.

"Uh..what is it?" the little girl blurted out. It was simple question and still a heavy one. It's not every day that an ex-member of the cartel would have her senses dulled by an external source. Somewhere, something or perhaps even someone powerful is residing within this dungeon.

It is up to this little party here to find it and eliminate it.

Sera shrugged as she backed from the skeletons. "I say we kill these fuckers first, if they are still interested in fighting us."

Middy would simply nod and flank Sera. Khaki too would follow in kind. As always the trio are willing to cover one another's backs.

The skeleton facing Sera feebly swiped at her with one hand as the blade sliced up through it. Sharp edges of bone just barely grazed the cheek of the young woman; drawing just a bit of blood.

Quote

Khaki's attack had not been enough to stun her opponent for long, and it slammed a bony fist into her gut. Despite the creatures frail appearance, it hit with surprising impact.

Quote

Staggered by the Mistresses attack, her skeleton struggled to regain its balance; feet skidding across the ground. Once it had done so, it took another swipe at the woman, but only managed to clip her.

Quote

Ankou had not expected the skeletons to be disposed of with relative ease; and was surprised at how long it was taking. This was not a reflection on the skill of his subordinates, but on the strength of their enemies. Deciding to lend a hand, he judged that Khaki was having the most trouble, and decided to help her. He tossed his scythe at the skeleton, landing in its ribcage and sticking there.

Ankou rolls a 3

Currently Life total for Skeletons is this.

Skeleton 1: 1hp

Skeleton 2: 1hp

Skeleton 3: 1.5

Even when hit, Sera did not relent. She roared her defiance and let loose a stream of profanities while she leaped backward and threw a spear made of magical lightning. She would need to maintain distance for now. This dungeon is far more dangerous than anyone had expected. It's not every day that she would struggle against these bottom tier enemies.

Spoiler

It seemed that Khaki had the greatest misfortune in this battle. She was the one to take the most number of hits. The poor little girl is in dire straits now. That did not stop her from fighting however. Her blades glowed red as the sharp metal is coated with magical plasma. Even as the skeleton hit her gut, the little girl took it like a champ and did not waver. Instead, she pressed forward and began hacking the skeleton with her plasma blades.

Spoiler

Despite her concern for Khaki, the white-haired woman focused on her own battle. She trusted her ally greatly and had faith that no one in their party is stupid enough to be defeated by random mobs. Bloody skeletons. In response to the skeletons swipe, the Mistress motioned to dodge and countered with a kick instead.

The spear of crackling energy hit the skeleton facing Sera like the fist of an angry god. Bone was pulverized and then burned to ash as the lightning superheated the air; causing a crack of thunder to ring out across the plains.

Spoiler

Skeleton 1 reduced to 0 hp.

Seeing Khaki struggle with the unexpectedly strong minion sparked a protective urge somewhere in Ankou's heart. He had come to care for the Inner Circle of the Cult; though he would never say it outright. With a thought, he opened up a portal underneath her opponent, sending it hurtling into a dimension of fire. The Skeleton fighting the Mistress stumbled into the portal, but it closed before it could fall all the way through. It did cut it in half at the waist however.

Spoiler

Ankou rolls a 10, crits, then rolls a two. Skeleton 2 reduced to 0 hp. Skeleton 3 now at .25 hp.

Ankou looked over at the Mistress and gestured for her to finish the last one off.

The Mistress did not miss the gesture. With Ankou's prompt, her lithe body sashayed at the last remaining skeleton, her heels clicking against the floor. Upon reaching the skeleton, the woman would raise a dainty hand before her and then flicked the skeleton.

A simple flick but the effect was devastating. The blow sent the skeleton flying backwards, its bony body crashing into the wall before breaking due to impact. The poor remains of the broken skeleton fell like glass splinter's on the ground.

Satisfied with her work, the woman turned to Ankou. "Now what?"

"I suspect we'll be able to proceed unobstructed; at least for a time."

Ankou suspected that the opponents they had dispatched had been the Demon Lord's way of testing their strength. The skeletons had been much stronger than normal undead would usually be. Most of the rabble that sought glory here would be easily defeated by them. Now the Lord knew that they were not a force to be trifled with. When he attacked next, he had no doubt that he would stronger enemies.

"Though you've probably figured as much; the Demon Lord knows we're here," he informed his comrades, "His presence is all over this land. We must tread carefully."

Explanation given, he started forward again, leaving the girls to follow him.

"I see," the Mistress mused, "so it is a demon lord."

She did find it odd that this place can be so oppressive even against someone like her. This is definitely a problem that needs to be solved. Perhaps as soon as possible. It can be quite the struggle when even she has trouble gauging the difficulty of this dungeon.

"I fear that at some point this would be one big boss rush," the white-haired woman spoke as she trailed after Ankou.

Nothing is more annoying than fighting one boss after another. The Mistress had experienced that way back in Nehalen. She still can't believe that she and the cartel would do that godslaying spree with barely any rests between each fight.

"I say we better be prepared for the worst."

The group proceeded east for several hours; during which time they were accosted several times by weaker versions of the skeletons they had already fought. Ankou couldn't help but wonder why the first three had been so strong, while the following were easily dispatched. Even when a group of a dozen or so had emerged from the sand to charge them, he had wiped them out with barely a thought. Perhaps the Demon Lord of this sector was conserving his strength for the final confrontation. Or perhaps he was simply weaker than he the necromancer had anticipated.

He supposed they would find out soon enough.

Eventually they came upon what appeared to be a forest of burnt, withered trees. Yet despite the apparent emptiness before them, he could feel something in there waiting for them.

"On your guard. Something awaits us further inside."

The trio nodded their assent. There was no longer need for words as they are all within enemy territoy. Within their playing field, all their enemies have a rather disgustingly high level of advantage.

Truth to be told, these skeletons do not really count as actual threats against anyone present within their party. Clearly, the demon lord has a power greater than anyone had expected. Unfortunately for him, the Mistress is strong against such opponents.

But now they had to brace for the imminent fight. The demon lord should not be a push-over after all. At the very least, the demon lord could pose a challenge for both Ankou and the idiot trio.

Walking through the forest was a tense experience as he could feel the presence within grow stronger with each step. But it wasn't the mere existence of the presence that worried him. Rather, he was concerned at the way the entity seemed to disappear, only to reappear seconds later in a completely different location. There didn't seem to be a discernable pattern either. Sometimes it would get closer to them; then retreat.

And then it was right in front of him, thrusting it's sword forward.

With barely a second to spare, Ankou opened a portal in front of the being. It flipped over the dimensional rift, and turned in a half circle to slash at the necromancer. This time the Lich was ready, and he summoned his scythe to block the strike. Now the two were locked as they pushed against each other.

"So, the Second shows itself."
