Nocturna- The Dragon Fury

-‐--------------------------------------------------------------

In the cold mountain mornings most things were quiet, save for birds and the slow wind through the forest trees. The smell of fresh dew upon pine trees and tall mountain grass filled the air and the slow and almost silent waves breaking on the pebble stone beach. Nocturna crawled her way slowly through the forest as she stalked her prey. She had been hunting the few remaining members of an ursine themed cult. And slowly but surely their numbers dwindled to the double digits. Only the strongest surviving now and they could only describe her attacks as a black only demon spiriting away their brothers never to be seen again.

This day however she had found new prey. An unfamiliar scent had pervaded her nostrils. She could not frivolously abandon her hunt but she also couldn't just ignore a possible threat. She was on the lookout for whatever walked this mountains in defiance of her rule.

Beauty was a concept that Noah was still having trouble making sense of. His research indicated that even normal humans struggled to quantify it. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about it was that what was considered aesthetically pleasing varied wildly from individual to individual. He was almost certain that there was some neurological reason for this; though he had yet to conduct any clinical research into the phenomenon. There were those however who insisted that beauty transcended the physical.

Noah disliked that explanation; as such things were hard to observe and record. However, he knew that the concept of beauty applied to more than just other humans. Art and nature were both things often considered to be beautiful.

For that reason he found himself trekking through a forest as he ascended a mountain. He hoped that the experience would stir something in him; though so far he was yet to be moved.

By any means of the word Nocturna was not stealthy. She could however dodge through trees with the agility of a wildcat. Tearing through underbrush and running through the forest with all her might.  She was like an unstoppable juggernaut. That is, until she could hear the telltale whir of gadgetry and the smell of metal was unmistakable to her. Memories of her friend rushed through her mind. She pressed on even harder in hopes of seeing Break again. Only to be dissatisfied by the sight of a strange new figure in the distance.

A deaf man could have heard the racket being caused in the brush; let alone someone with Noah's honed senses. He looked in the direction of the noise and activated his optical scanners. Images, thermal readings, and more were available to him in the blink of an eye. What he saw gave him a rare surprise. He had expected to see some kind of bear or deer making all the noise. That he might see a dragon had never occurred to him.

"I can see you," he called, "Though I suspect you are not trying to hide."

He hoped that the dragon was sentient. Many of them were, but others were little more than powerful beasts; acting on instinct.

With a curious look on her face she slanted her eyes. Though unable to speak in this form she was able to understand his speech her black scales shimmering in the light like a well polished ebony marble dipped in a pool of mercury. Her breathing slowed to a low rumble able to be felt in the earth even from this distance. Her mind was still not made up yet, was this friend or foe? She sensed no hostility in this droids words but that was something Break could do as well. Gilded words and a cold steel blade had ended many a life of their enemies. She would step ever closer to him guard raised but no signs of aggression in her slow and calculated movements. Her eyes never leaving his feet. Those were always the first tell of an attack. Long before the eyes or hands. This droid was certainly an oddity in these parts... but, then again so was she. After a quick assessment she dubbed him of little threat to herself. Relaxing her body she would begin to walk back to her dwelling on the lake shore. Whether or not if he followed her was of little concern to her, she would allow him to stay in her mountains until whatever curiosity that brought him was sated.

Noah was intrigued by the behavior of the great creature. It seemed as though it understood not just his words, but his intentions as well; and had dubbed him not a threat. This confirmed his theory about the beings sentience. There was something else about the dragon that piqued his interest as well. He couldn't be sure, but it seemed to him that he had seen recognition in its eyes. As he was sure that he had never encountered the creature before, this seemed to imply that it had met a being such as himself before.

Given all this, it was no surprise that he decided to follow the dragon for the time being. If it began to act aggressively he would back off; but for now it seemed to tolerate his presence. Suddenly this trip had taken an interesting turn.

Nocturna walked through the woods with all the elegance of an elephant. Trudging through trees and underbrush as if they were nothing. Her path marked with what might be considered an aloof kindness, as it was now a clear path for anyone behind her if they so chose to follow.

She would continue to walk through the forest at a slow and deliberate pace toward the lake of crystalline waters. Before eventually reaching a lakeside camp. Overlooked by a large standing oak tree, the camp seemed to be a large area of tamped ground surrounding a broken metallic ship hull. The dragon kept walking until completely submerged into the cold and calm waters.

The dragon left an easy path for Noah to follow; though whether she did so purposely he did not know. He had no doubt that she knew he was following her. If she had any objections to this, she gave no indication of it. Eventually she led him to a camp by a large river. After taking in the camp, he looked back to the dragon, who was submerging herself in the lake.

Now he weighed whether or not he should follow the being into the lake. His body was equipped to be able to traverse underwater spaces; plus he had no need to breathe in the traditional sense. Ultimately he decided against it, and simply sat on the shore, waiting for her to emerge.

Submerged into the water she felt the safest to think of a possible way to communicate with the stranger. The voice of a dragon was a powerful weapon and even her whispers were often lethal to the average being. Perhaps a change in form? While risky to do in front of a stranger it was her only idea. She would have to at least get overit enough to shed the form which made her the most physically imposing. As the flesh and scales and armor began to melt off and solidify into the water creating pebbles of polished black stones along the bottom of the lake that shone at the bottom of the crystal waters like droplets of night dotting the lake bed like stars dotting the sky along the pale white sand and silt that naturally adorned the location. Her body now that of a woman in her late 20s and taller than most men at a towering 9 feet tall and sporting a tail at almost double that length she propelled herself forward towards the shore once again stopping just before exiting the water. With quick clearing of her throat a low and sultry voice she would simply ask that he turn the other way as she went to fetch her clothes from the ship.

While he was unsure why she would appear before him nude if she didn't want him to see her in that state, Noah complied with her request. His interest was now piqued at the display of shapeshfiting he had just witnessed. Such an ability was not unheard of among dragonkind, but it was still interesting. Indeed, he himself was capable of such a thing; though he imagined her process was different to his.

He sat down on the shore and waited for the being to come back. Her temporary absence left him aware of a strange sensation, one that he couldn't quite quantify. For many years he had paid no heed to such feelings; physical or otherwise. The dragons true form was undeniably impressive; but her human form stirred something within him; something long forgotten, yet familiar.

Noah would continue to contemplate this until she came to him.

With the question answered she smiled. As a dragon she was always bare, but a man who would turn when requested was indeed a gentleman. Droids and cyborgs tended to be of a common mindset. Her scales clung to her skin in a sort of tight mail armor. She walked to the ship and quickly donned her normal clothes a black Victorian dress with a large white silk bow tied at the waist and another tying back her long red hair one might mistake her for a very large noble lady if not for the heavy black combat boots she donned at all times.

Walking out to meet her new guest she introduced herself rather bluntly.

"I am Nocturna, Fury Queen of the skies and protector of the mountain. Who are you?"

When his host returned, Noah turned back to see that she had donned something more akin to formal attire. Once again he felt the strange stirring from before, but he quelled it with but a thought. Considering the dragons choice of clothing, he decided that he would follow her lead. A mental command caused the hiking clothes he was wearing to become a featureless, rippling mass upon his form. Soon after they would reform as black dress pants, a steel blue dress shirt, and black dress shoes.

Once Nocturna had introduced herself, he would give his simple reply, "I am Noah."

She watched as his form amalgamated his clothes into the new formal attire. She was impressed, to say the least. Looking around she noted while this was her only set of clothes it did seem a bit out of place among the mountains and wilderness. Reaching her hand down she offered the cyborg help getting up from the shore.

"Well Noah, let me start you some tea. If you would humor me, I have a few questions and I wouldn't mind if you joined me for a short while."

Her cooking skill was that of a drunken blind man, but she could make an exceptional cup of herbal tea.

If he were to join her Nocturna would take him to the now slightly repaired ship. She had at least hidden the form of the hulking mass behind an outer shell in the shape of a massive log cabin but inside was still a halfway operational galley.

Noah took the hand up, "I have no objections to this."

As the pair walked, he got a better look at the ship; and questions began to form in his head. He couldn't help but wonder if the dragon had been the one responsible for the vessels current condition. It seemed unlikely that it had come to rest here under normal circumstances. But even as large as she was in her true form, he wasn't sure if she would be able to carry such a massive vessel.

Once inside he put those questions aside and waited for Nocturna to ask her questions.

The ship while currently unable to even consider flight was still operable for its many luxury features. The kitchen as still in prime condition. If only a little smoke damaged. Possibly due to her terrible cooking but just as likely that her anger at her own culinary abilities tended to cause...explosive outbursts.

But if there was one thing she knew how to make it was tea. Quickly she elegantly poured the boiling water after packing the tiny silver infuser with a fragrant mixture of tea leaves and a pinch of her favorite jasmine. A small touch of honey for a hint of sweetness and the tea was ready.

Setting the table she would first seat her guest then herself. Before pouring each a steaming cup of tea.

"I'm not one to mince words Noah so I hope my directness wont be jarring  but I need to know how you were created."
