Everything into the Dark (Nightmare Descends 2:4A)

Recommended Posts

The previous realms faded. One ending in a triumphant victory with all foes slain and scattered. Child's play. Though there was a bittersweet tinge as the defenders were separated from the child they had fought to protect. In the other realm, a bloodsport came to its conclusion, as the survivors of the blood-soaked sands rushed to the portal. Some of them did not escape unscathed, being overtaken by the last blows aimed at them. But they survived. And some of these survivors, chosen with no rhyme or reason, found themselves back at the camp, at least seemingly. Some would certainly look around. Had they finally escaped? Were their trials finally over? A laugh echoed all around them in response, conveyed into their ears and their minds alike. A fierce wind blew through the area, buffeting the group, though not enough to where they would be blown over. A shape of dust took form in the midst of them, one that the ebon knight Gormaric frowned upon recognizing. He drew Shadowfang and began to advance as the form spoke.

Spoiler

"One of you has encountered me before. I was thwarted in my task of bursting through the breach made by Remissio, and felling Inns'th in its vulnerable state. A shame, but I have been granted a second chance. Now, all of you... when you throw everything into the dark, what remains for the light to shine on?"

Darkness consumed the land around them, the only light being the feeble beams which fell upon each member of the group from above. These beams expanded after a time. The landscape around them had changed, from the camp to... what had it changed to? The ground was now a patchwork of stone and earth. The streets of Inns'th, what seemed to be the floor of a grand citadel, and the rocky terrain of the Spires within Yh'mi. Around them? A couple of the Spires. Pieces of a grand citadel. The old wall of Inns'th, before Remissio's breach and Aligoria's repair. The skies? The skies were all wrong. THE SKIES WERE ALL WRONG. Yh'mi's skies, a clear blue sky, and a stormy night, all weaved together into a nonsensical patchwork. The figure in the dust chuckled for a moment.

"The light shines on the truth that is pushed aside, that one refuses to acknowledge or consider."

Gormaric had made his way forward and swung Shadowfang. A demonic arm extended from the figure, its hand stopping the blade's momentum mid-swing.

"The truth one tries to destroy. You created me, Gormaric. In resurrecting your master, you gave me the chance to return as well. I am Noleron, the Fell Gale. And I will depart only once all of you have faced the dark truths you refuse to face."

The demonic hand snapped its fingers. A curtain of darkness fell around the area once more. It lifted after what seemed like a few moments. The paladins of the Order of the White Hand stood in a circle around the area, facing towards the group. Fidelitas, at least, would recognize them all. Chastity. Videntia. Volentia. Erudition. Ingel. But there were also two more, two that he would be especially shocked to see. Diligence, alive, gesturing to Fidelitas and pointed toward an empty spot in the circle. Reserved for him. The other, Remissio. He stood among those he had betrayed with no sign of corruption. Gormaric frowned deeply at his presence as well. He had killed the corrupted paladin himself. Why, then, was he here? The Ebon Knight stared at the demonic entity before him, looking for an answer that was not forthcoming. Still, it spoke.

"I cannot make you accept the truth with words alone. I know this. Take a short time to prepare, for I will test you shortly."

Was this a trap? No, nothing moved to attack, or anything. Only silence and foreboding. This would especially be a godsend to those who had come here from the arena, who had been battered physically and mentally. Such as the war elephant Surus, whose crew of archers atop him were expending all of their efforts into calming down the elephant, which had grown maddened just before it had entered the portal in the arena.

Spoiler

The Aligorian archers were mostly successful. The elephant still seem slightly irritated, but for the most part it had been calmed into a fighting-ready state. The archers clambered back onto their platform and readied their arrows for... whatever might be coming.

The ebon knight Gormaric, meanwhile, frowned and focused on his own thoughts, the words spoken by the demonic entity, especially its insinuation he had created it, sent his thoughts into a turbulent jumble. The presence of Diligence and Remissio, two he knew to be dead, both at least in part by his actions, bothered him immensely as well.

Nothing seemed to happened, his thoughts blew about like the wind around him. Growling, he concentrated his will once again. This time, his thoughts were put back into order, his mind clear as crystal and his will entirely his. Very good. He held Shadowfang tightly in hand, awaiting what could possibly be coming next.

Fidelitas

Fidelitas never thought that he would ever regard the camp at the Furthest Point as his home, but that was the emotion that was provoked when the camp came into view. But this was not a time to feel relieved yet, even though his body, and especially his mind, longed for a moment of rest.

“Be wary,” Fidelitas said a word of warning, before cautiously stepping forward. If there were things hiding around the corners, he would rather bait them out now than wait for them to pounce. Unnatural laughter soon made a mockery of his attempt, followed by heavy winds that threatened to uproot the camp.  Their surroundings changed, but not all too unfamiliar. It was like pieces of Yh'mi's past, present and future were ripped out and pieced together in a surreal reality. Fidelitas pursed his lips. By now, he could guess that none of this was actually real, and he was stuck in a series of visions or illusions. Whether the people around him were actually present in the same illusion, or if they were just figments of his imagination, he did not know.  But unlike the previous two nightmares, there was something that felt real about this figure in the swirling dust.

Gormaric stepped lunged towards the figure, only to be stopped by the demon. Fidelitas had no idea what Noleron spoke about, but it seemed Gormaric knew it all too well. Was there something that the dark knight had kept hidden from the White Hand all this time? Whatever it was, they could deal with it later. Fidelitas moved forward, leading with his sword to aid Gormaric, but stopped cautiously when complete darkness fell upon them. When the other members of his Order were revealed, Fidelitas looked at each of them, taking deep breaths to convince himself that they were not real. His eyes lingered on Diligence, then Remissio. A chill went down his back, even as it served to confirm the illusion. Both of the paladins were dead, and he had buried Diligence himself. Remissio.. when he had attacked Inns'th, his eyes shone full of conviction and righteous energy - just as they used to as he fell the creatures of Yh'mi. He still looked that way now, their brother in arms. Fidelitas' eyes flickered to the empty spot. No, he could not take that spot. But he had no doubt this meant that he was going to fight his own comrades. Was this what it had been like for Remissio? What exactly had forced him to attack the White Hand? Fidelitas felt bone-weary, but looked around at the team around him. The party had changed, but he was still the leader, and responsible for their lives.  He closed his eyes for a moment to steel himself for whatever psychological assault the demon was going to throw at him, then called upon his goddess to close his remaining wounds in anticipation of what was to come next.

In the aftermath of that strange encounter Gormaric would find Sheryl Wainwright approaching him. Wounded badly in the last few seconds of the battle of the arena colosseum by the dragon, she was swathed in an array of bandages from a shoulder to a hip.

It didn't seem to detract at her from her noble bearing however, calm despite their predicament. A veteran of many life or death situations, the blond-haired librarian knightess was not one to be moved by theatrics. A pleasant wind blew about her, one at odds with the polite solemnity on her fair visage.

"So our foe has proven himself a dullard and has named himself. What do you know about this Noleron?"

"So, what do you think of this?" the white-haired woman asked as they entered a brand new event. As usual the trio of ladies regarded this strange phenomenon as a source of amusement instead of the usual suspicion.

"Eh? Fuck that shit," spat Sera, "This shitty realm is full of bullshit. We should leave as soon as possible."

Khaki, last person of the trio was silent through all this commotion. Her thoughts were still on that scared little kid on the other realm. Did she did the right thing? Will the kid survive without her? Such ideas running amok in her mind was unhealthy for someone like her so she did the only option she has. Forget about it for now. She'll come back later to check up on the child.

"I wanna see this through to the end," said Khaki as the trio joined the others.

The delusion Dan was under; being back in time, back in that Coliseum from before, melted away. Dan's mind was in a state of chaos.

As he was trying to calm himself down, some jackass appeared in the darkness, and taunted one of the others here, in classic JRPG villain style. He said something about facing truths they'd buried or something? Dan wasnt paying attention. The guy that introduced himself as Noleron, who undoubtedly had silver hair, was remarkably strong, likely had some sort of past trauma leading him to become a villain that wants to destroy the world, or the thought that destroying it was healing it or some such thing, the one that basically welcomed them to his humble abode, and monologued about nonsense all of maybe one of them understood. The JRPG villain stereotype was almost complete. All that was missing was the main antagonist bursting out into evil laughter for no reason. Instead, he did the cool villain thing where he snapped his fingers and vanished, insinuating that they would meet again.

Dan sat down again and breathed. It was difficult at first, but he focused his mind. Within a few minutes, he returned to his usual self. He wasnt in the arena. This was now, not 2 years ago.

Now completely sane again, Dan was ready to deal with whatever else this backwards ass country had. All he knew at this point was that there had better be something amazing at the end of this Yh'mi expedition to make all this worth it.

Gormaric looked toward Sheryl as she asked about their foe, the demon.

"Noleron? He... is the entity that turned my former master, the Shadow King Neque, onto the path of darkness. I do not know why he is here now to torment us. But I assure you, he has been destroyed before, and we as a group are capable of repeating that feat."

"You abandoned him. You left him alone, scared, with nobody to guide him. Nobody to save him should those dark entities return. He may as well be dead, but you would never know if he did die, would you?"

The dark, accusing whisper echoed in Khaki's thoughts. Was it her own voice? It was hard to tell. Whatever the case, the words were followed by a wind that continuously swirled around her. It didn't react whatsoever to attempts to dispel it, and she could feel it erode away at her mental faculties, her sense of sanity.

"Why see this through? Nobody would blame you if you were to run. There are no prizes to be had, only pain and misery. The door is open behind you, you only need to step through."

Similarly to Khaki, a voice spoke in Middy's mind. This one had a much different tone, however. Pleading? And indeed, if Middy were to turn around, she would see a door open in the tower behind her, inviting, beckoning. Whatever the voice might have been, a wind swirled around her as well the same mental effect as the one around Khaki.

(Engaging in combat will reveal all hidden information... but do you want to?)

Meanwhile, the 'real' form of Noleron appeared in the center of the mishmashed landscape once again. The windy demon floated over to Gormaric, who carefully watched it with Shadowfang firmly in hand. It spoke.

"Gormaric. The renowned ebon knight, one of Yh'mi's Banes, the Black Blade of Aligoria... what are you to the Order? You are a commander of the shadow, the one responsible for the rise of Aligoria and the return of the Shadow King. They must fear that. For now you are a useful tool, but you are an agent of great change as well. What if the corruption of Yh'mi takes you? Why take the risk of that, when you can be blindsided and removed when you least expect it? You have no real common ground with the Order, aside from a shared desire to drive back the darkness of Yh'mi. The Inanis will not bend to Yh'mi, this much has been made obvious. But why does the darkness turn against itself? You could be the uniter. Accept the call of Lun'silth, that which is echoing in the memories of Remissio. Merge the powers of the Inanis and Yh'mi, a darkness unfathomable that will consume Terrenus. Or, is that Fracture now? Think on that, I don't expect an answer now."

Noleron moved away from Gormaric to float toward Fidelitas, staying just out of the reach of the paladin's blade.

"Fidelitas. The bravest, the most devoted of the Order. Even still, you must wonder what drove Remissio. What caused him, after everything, to turn on all of you and seek your demise. Was Lun'silth's corruption so powerful that it twisted his conviction into a caricature of itself, a conviction turned against friends and allies? Or... was there a truth conveyed to him that the Order would never wish revealed? I can show you that truth, Fidelitas. You are a good man. But the rest of the Order..."

The demon's gaze turned toward the circle of paladins, and something drew Fidelitas to follow the demon's finger as he pointed at them. First, it fell on Ingel.

"Ingel. You harbor a suspicion of him, don't you? He protected from your wrath that witch that devised the method to detect Twistlings. Hmm, perhaps... a ploy to conceal that he is a Twistling himself?"

And indeed, as Noleron spoke, a shadowy goop arose from the ground, spreading all over Ingel and covering him. It slowly dripped away to the ground, revealing a Twistling with sword and shield in hand. Normally a Twistling, when revealed, would have gone on the attack. But here, it looked like it awaited orders, like something still controlled it. Noleron, perhaps?

Enemy- Twistling Protector 'Ingel'

Spoiler

HP: 6
Actions (1 per turn):
- Sword Thrust: -1 HP

Passive:
- Shield: Blocks first attack each round. Chance of blocking further attacks with a 3 on a d3.

"Interesting. Are they all monsters, Fidelitas? Was being convinced of that the reason Remissio decided that the Order had to die? Oh, what about Erudition? The fast talking scribe?"

As he spoke, the same shadowy goop covered Erudition as it had Ingel. When it dripped away, it revealed not a Twistling, or indeed any creature of Yh'mi. Clothing like some kind of assassin, a vague resemblance to Aligoria's Shadow Guard... beneath the hood, skeletal features? The creature drew forth two longswords, an empty gaze turned toward the group.

Enemy- Assassin Scribe 'Erudition'

Spoiler

HP: 6
Actions (1 per turn):
- Dual Sword Slice: -2 HP

Passive:
- Split Attack: Can choose to hit two enemies for -1 HP each as opposed to one enemy for -2.

"Two of eight. Maybe not quite a pattern, perhaps still coincidence? Surely, your venerable leader couldn't be among them? But then again... was he not the one that Remissio targeted most intently?"

Noleron looked over at Remissio, who nodded.

"Indeed. Chastity... could he be one of the most monstrous of you all? A puller of strings whose ruse to maintain the illusion is absolute?"

This time, a shadowy goop did not cover Chastity. Instead, he was obviously wracked by pain and convulsions as the landscape rumbled and shifted in the area around him. The head of the order shifted into a monstrous being. A Cyclops, somewhere in size between the smaller, intelligent version, and the large version with bestial, brute strength in spades. But more than that... there where what seemed to be the tentacles of a Maash visible poking out in odd places, recognizable by those versed in the creatures of Yh'mi. And as Fidelitas watched... five more copies of this monstrosity arose from the ground, completely identical to the first. Each of them wielded a massive halberd, one that looked as if it was capable of much damage.

Enemy(Sub-Boss)- Order's Head 'Chastity'

Spoiler

HP: 12

Actions (3 per turn):
- Psychic Strike: -1 HP, -1 Sanity to 1 character
- Mass Attack: -1 HP to 4 characters, randomized using dice rolling thread. Once per turn.
Passives:
- Illusory Clones- If you attack this creature, roll a d6. If you don't roll a 6, you are inflicted with -1 Sanity, and your attacks whiffs as it strikes an illusory copy. Applies once per turn per character. Area Attack bypasses this effect for that attack, and the whole turn.
- Regenerative Healing- At the start of each round, is healed by the result of a d4 roll.
- Dimensional Scream- At the start of each round, one randomly chosen character is afflicted with the psychic scream of a Cyclops. A successful (6) die roll will avoid this effect. If failed, inflicted with -2 sanity.

"Oho! Maybe we're on to something, after all..."

The demon floated back to the center of the landscape, addressing the whole of the group.

"Your test begins now! Conquer the monstrous Order, and I will impart upon you some of the truths of Yh'mi!"

This exclamation was met with a volley of arrows fired by the Aligorian archers. The arrows were deflected by a stiff wind, and Noleron wagged a chiding finger.

"Were I you, I would not test my tolerance. Strike at me, and you will find this place to be much more of a hell than it looks to be."

Gormaric frowned deeply, climbing into Eri's back and glaring at the demon as the black wyvern took to the air.

Housekeeping-

Spoiler

This post is loooooooong enough already, and I'm typing this on New Year's Eve lmao. The rest of the 'monsters' will be revealed in the next round. Or, if you're feeling particularly ballsy, you can smack them and I will reveal their abilities and such mid this-round. Other than that, I'll be posting the actions for Gormaric, Surus, and all the currently revealed enemies in an upcoming post in the next couple of days. Again, if you're feeling ballsy, go ahead and try to smack them pre-emptively. Nothing will go wrong. ?

Realm-Specific Actions-

Spoiler

Manipulate- Well, this an interesting one! If you take this action, roll a d20 and share with me the result. That will determine how the landscape of this realm will shift. It could be beneficial to the group. It could be detrimental. You never know! Major Bane on a 1-5; Minor Bane on a 6-10; Minor Boon on a 11-15, and Major Boon on a 16-20.

Calm- When you take the Meditate action, roll a d2. If you roll a 2, recover an extra +1 Sanity.

???- It is a mysteryyyy. Oho, wouldn't you like to know what it is, then? This one will be revealed in the next round, be patient.

Gormaric flew below the messed-up sky atop Eri's back, scanning the enemies (and his allies) below. The circle of the supposed Paladins of the Order... three had turned monstrous. The rest remained silently watching. And Noleron? That demon was surely up to something here. Nodding to himself, the ebon knight drew Shadowfang, and gathered up the power of the Inanis. He sent it flying down in a massive ball of black flames, one that blasted "Chastity" (and his clones), "Erudition", "Ingel", and also struck Remissio and Diligence. He would have hit Noleron with the blast, but he didn't want to test the powers the demon held in this realm. Not yet, anyways. He then committed to a diving attack, striking the still-burning "Chastity" with Shadowfang, and followed it with another attack.

He then came down for a landing, scanning the land around him. Suddenly, a voice whispered in the back of his mind. Indistinct, but... familiar. Neque? The voice intensified.

"Gormaric... Noleron does not fully control this realm. Seize it... yourself. Turn... the board against your foes."

Gormaric frowned intensely. Then, nodding, he focused on the landscape around him, willing the landscape to mold at his will.

A chasm split open just in front of and around Videntia and Volentia, cutting them off from the rest of the circle and also the group. If they were monsters as well and transformed, it would take them a bit of effort to cross the chasm and reach the party, a delay that would certainly be beneficial to them, all told.

The archer crew atop Surus, meanwhile, continued to try and calm the war elephant, to push it over the edge into complete calm and sanity. Their first attempt failed. But, somehow, Gordin shouting "NUTS!" caused the elephant to perk up its ears and finally calm down. With a laugh, Captain Jeorge sent Surus charging forward. The elephant slammed into Chastity, sending the hybrid beast the supposed leader of the Order had turned into skidding backwards along the ground. The archer crew looked all around and taunted both the transformed and untransformed paladins, high on some perceived victory.

Spoiler

Surus (war elephant)

The ebon knight, a good boy of a war elephant, and the Aligorian archer crew had been so bold as to seize the initiative and strike out first. Now it was the other side's turn.

Though scorched by the black flames of the Inanis, Ingel nevertheless strode forward, intent on a particular target. Fidelitas. Whether this was sheer coincidence, or it was something of the distrust between the two manifest... who knew? Regardless, the sword and board style Twistling charged forth and thrust his sword toward the paladin of the Order, who seemed to be the only real one of them within this realm.

Erudition was the next to move. The scribe (or I suppose as he was here, skeleton assassin) sped forward with dual blades in hand. He slashed swiftly twice: the first slash at Dan, and then the second at Sera. You might note that these were the two that talked (or thought) the most shit. Whether Noleron knew that and was specifically punishing them, or if it was still just coincidence? If only the answers were so easy to find. If only.

Spoiler

Erudition

Actions Taken:

Split Attack- (Targets: Dan @HollowCipher, Sera @Zashiii. -1 HP each)

Chastity was the last to move. The head honcho, the strongest of the threats before the group. Or perhaps that was Noleron, but as the demon seemed content to stay in place... who knew what power the demon truly held? The group would not have overly long to ponder that, as the great beast charged forward and swung his halberd and a wide arc, slashing into four of the assembled adventurers. Dan and Fidelitas would be the first to be hit. It was still hard to tell if there was any rhyme or reason to the incoming attacks, as the halberd would also catch Sheryl and Gormaric along its arc. With this attack bringing it into the center of the group, the towering brute now carefully picked and chose his targets, as energy suffused his halberd. The first strike was a thrust at Middy, one that also sent a telepathic blast that struck her mind, causing turbulence and pain there. The second strike was a more controlled slash at Surus, one that caused the war elephant to bellow in anger and undoing the effort that had just been undertaken by the archer crew. But, sometimes, those were the breaks.

Spoiler

Psychic Strike- (Target: Surus @EpicRome23. -1 HP and -1 Sanity)

And Noleron? The wind demon waited. And watched.

Spoiler

As per the vote in the OOC, the Calm action has been added in this realm. Honestly? We're probably going to need it lmao.

Also, the Manipulate action! The d20 results are divided into four categories: Major Bane on a 1-5; Minor Bane on a 6-10; Minor Boon on a 11-15, and Major Boon on a 16-20. This seems mostly self-explanatory, but in case a TL;DR is necessary, degrees of good and bad, greater than 10 is ideal. This action ties into Noleron's mechanics, though I'll be explaining that one later on in the round.

The round of questionably unavoidable and extremely overpowered attacks assaulted Middy. The poor woman once known as the Mistress could not even muster the strength to protect her self, much less strike back at her assailants. To her dismay, her two companions did not even give her a glance as the duo had other problems to face. The most she could do was lie down on her back and pull out a another stick of cigar hoping a brief smoke would give her the strength to combat this realm's powers. Apparently smoking heals, both mentally and physically, as healing energy coursed through her body repairing her wounds and assisting in pushing back the ensuing madness that plagued her innocent mind.

It seemed that Sera took the least amount of damage but she was the one who screamed the most. Mostly out of frustration because her enemies are dumb enough to attack her. A series of curses streamed out of her mouth, the act itself somewhat healing her body. Then she charged at her attacker, Erudition, and delivered a mean punch into the bastard's gut with her lightning charged fist.

"You motherfucker! You don't fucking mess with me! I will fuck you up for that!"

Determined, she launches herself at Sera's attacker. Long coat fluttering, unsheathed swords gripped in reverse within each tiny hand, the little girl reached Erudition as soon as Sera steered clear of the enemy. Yellow eyes glowing with killing intent, both her blades  glowed crimson as each pointy object was stabbed into Erudition's chest.

"Time to die, you big meanie!" Khakina squealed.

Khaki's blades sunk into Erudition's chest. The skeleton assassin stared at the blades... and then, the shadowy goop re-appeared around it, dripping down rapidly onto the ground to reveal the unchanged paladin beneath. The elven scribe stumbled backwards, bleeding profusely. His own blades fell from his hands, and his gaze turned toward Fidelitas, confused and pleading.

"Fidelitas is this the end I have so much left to do still I don't want to die in this place..."

His voice faded as his blood continued to flow, and his rapid-fire words trailed off. As they ended, the elven scribe fell onto his knees, then forward onto the ground, lifeless in a pool of blood. Erudition was dead, and where one might expected some indication of an illusion like fading away, or perhaps an explosion to remove the body from sight, there was no such sign. It seemed all too real.

The windy demon Noleron finally seemed to notice what was going as Erudition was slain. A pair of glowing eyes visibly appeared in the dust, looking around before focusing on the chasm Gormaric's will had created. The demon focused its on will on the chasm surrounding Videntia and Volentia. Something, however, happened that caused the demon to let out an angry growl. The land beneath the two paladins heated up significantly, so hot as to seemingly bake the duo within their armor. They would certainly take some damage getting off of this piece of land and over the chasm around them, were they to move at all.

Having responded to the manipulation, a demonic arm extended from the wind again. A red energy formed a bolt at the tip of the finger, and this bolt struck Khaki square in the torso. She could feel the residual energy lingering even as the attack faded...

Fidelitas

Fidelitas pursed his lips when the members of his Order twisted into abominations. It was easy to block out Noleron’s words - the entity was obviously malicious, and his words held no sway over the paladin. Fidelitas has had long-time suspicions of Ingel, but the rest of the Order, no, he trusted them, and he especially respected Chastity. “You have to try harder to fool me, you foul being,” he retorted to Noleron’s taunt. “Even as Yh’mi’s creatures, I’m sure they would be smarter than to be commanded by the likes of you.”

The Ingel-twistling charged at him with his blade. Fidelitas raised his own sword to parry, but the unnatural strength of the twistling threw him off. Ingel struck a heavy blow across his chestplate, but it was deflected by the leftover remnants of Frederick’s magic. Fidelitas scarcely had time to regain his balance when the mutated form of Chastity followed up with a massive swing of his halberd. Fidelitas brought his sword up to defend against the blow. The halberd clanged against it, the force jarring his arms and pushing him backwards, forcing him onto his knees. He locked eyes with Erudition at that moment - the lanky, socially awkward boy who was lovable all the same - Erudition, whose blood was spilling out from his chest. Fidelitas watched Erudition as he exhaled his last breath. A chill went down his spine. The Order had all been prepared, some day, for their comrades to be slain one by one before their eyes. There was also an unspoken understanding among them that they would put down one of their own without hesitation if they showed any signs of betrayal.

That was the conviction that Fidelitas clung to when he channeled his goddess’ power deep within himself to refresh his strength. With a roar of defiance, he leapt at Chastity, whose illusory copies had been dispelled by Gormaric’ attack. His sword glowed with righteous might as he stabbed it through the creature’s gut, followed by a slash intended to cut off one or more of its flailing tentacles. Expecting an attack aimed at him next, Fidelitas took a defensive position, boosted by the power of his faith, which had never been stronger than this moment.

Name: Dan Palmer.

HP: 999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999  Oh fine then. 5/5.

Sanity: 5/5

Normal skills: Attack, Defend, Meditate.

Special Skills: Counter-Attack (1/3), Mass Healing (3/3), Advanced Buff (3/3).

Dan, admittedly, was not paying attention. That was why the attacks that came at him out of nowhere for no reason caught him off guard. The first one, a sword slash, Dan barely had time to move out of the way of, just enough to where it made a shallow slash into his arm, rather than a deep one in his chest. He winced, both in pain, and at the embarrassment of letting something like THIS hit him.

The halberd attack went similarly. It was swung in a wide arc, which Dan was able to dodge also, but it cut into his back as well.
That. Was a mistake. Not on Dan's part.

While not a whip, the stinging pain in his back still triggered the boy to a lesser extent. He didn't turn into an enraged, rabid killing machine however. No, this was a bit... different.

"Oh. You wanna play, do ya?"

A sinister smile formed on his face.

"Alright then. Let's play, bitch."

Spoiler

The wind picked up suddenly, and those sensitive to it would feel Dan's power spike. His hair would start changing from the roots up, until it had turned into a shimmering gold color, and stood up, completely defying gravity's weak, pitiful laws. Dan opened his eyes, revealing the brown irises to be a brilliant gold. Then, came the flash of blinding golden light. Though, interestingly, those looking would somehow be able to clearly see what was going on inside. Magic of this caliber was an interesting thing. It seemed his clothing was undergoing the most drastic of changes. Where he was previously wearing a t-shirt and shorts, Dan was now wearing a full set of golden armor, though minus footwear. His armored greaves stopped right at his ankles. The armor had naturally formed on him a bit at a time, for drama and coolness. First the gauntlets, then the greaves, followed by the waist plate, then the cape, then the shoulder guards, and finally the chestplate.
The final product looked something like

Spoiler

A smirk formed on Dan's face as he entered his form change for the first time outside of practice.

"Don't hold this against me. You asked for it."

He opened his right hand, palm up.

"But you see, we have places to be, therefore we don't have much time. So-"

His eyes narrowed and his smirk grew, malice very clear in his face.

"I'll wrap this up fast."

Dan closed his eyes, and suddenly pointed 2 fingers up together, and a cyclone exploded beneath Chastity, spiraling her upward with enough force to tear through armor with only moderate effort. After that, he simply pointed one finger in Chastity's direction. He opened one eye, his smirk widened, and he fired a beam from the tip of his index finger, to go right through Chastity's head.

He smiled, satisfied with the kill, before popping a vial from his pocket. The contents evaporated immediately upon contact with the air, and Dan took control of the air around it. He then dispersed the vapor to himself and others. This would heal them, or it was supposed to. It did in every test he'd performed on it. No better place for final test of a product than in the field, right?
But then, he realized something else. These were allies, and likely meant something to someone who wasn't him. While of course, Dan cared very little about the members of the Order, Fiddle-de-tee probably took this pretty badly. This irritated him slightly, and looked into the surrounding darkness, at Noleron, one who seemed to be plaguing Khakis, who Dan abruptly realized was here. Khakis was his.... well, friend? Maybe? Somewhere between friend and acquaintance? Dan was...not entirely sure where they stood, but they were above neutral ground, which made her an ally of his. And no one fucks with Dan Palmer's allies.

"....You. Whatever your name is."

He looked right where he sensed Noleron was.

"You gonna actually do anything yourself, or do you plan to let your minions fail at doing all the work while you hide like a little bitch?"

He spread his arms slightly at his sides. Whether this was a pose or a taunt was difficult to guess.

Noleron seemed to summon an army of monsters, mutated and unholy imitations of past White Hand paladins. Or were they? His words were clearly designed to seed doubt and despair. Sheryl would have none of it. In this moment, Fidelitas and the White Hand were their allies. The world could be grey and some truths could be exposed and handled down the line as they came, but the moment was black and white and that was all that mattered. As the imitation of Chastity swung its weapon around, Sheryl was ever ready, leaping backwards as she spun with the blow, deflecting it off the steel bracers on her wrist.

She remained alert for any other attack that might come her way.  Skimming the outskirts of the battle on a gust of wind, the main body of the party laid into the enemy, she kept an eye out for surprises and analyzed her enemy while the majority of her comrades sought to take out the corrupted version of Fidelitas. For her part, Sheryl took an especially keen interest on the wind demon. He seemed ethereal, almost untouchable by physical means.

But she was none other then Sheryl Wainwright of the Wildly Blowing Wind, Librarian-Knight of the Order of Force Majeure. Keeper of Lore and the Arcane, she knew the legends and myths of over a hundred lands, understood the whispered arcane languages and was able to read and translate the runecraft and symbols of another hundred more. Drawing upon her knowledge of eldritch beings, she raised both hands up, looking at Noleron through them as though down a barrel, and made as if she would rip him apart by the dint of her motion alone. In reality, she enforced her aeromancery and shot a visible, and extraordinarily turbulent storm across at the windy demon, focused into a spiraling cyclone.

The hybrid beast that "Chastity" had turned into collapsed to the ground after all the blows it had taken. Like with Erudition, the shadowy goop appeared and flowed into a crack into the ground. The head of the Order was there now, down to one knee. He looked toward Fidelitas, saying nothing but giving a somber nod. Then, his head drooped, and he was still.

Noleron, meanwhile, had been preparing a resounding response to Dan's taunting. However, Sheryl's attack caught him off guard, and distracted him for the moment. When he had recovered from the unexpected blow, a dark chuckle reverberated throughout the landscape.

"Hmph. So this is how you want to play, then? Very well, no more tricks. No more mercy. I will unleash everything that I have been granted control of, and whomever shall emerge alive will win this game of mine."

Noleron formed into a fully physical form now, a towering black and red demon that looked down at the brave adventurers gathered beneath him. An intense wind formed around him, flames and infernal energy being sucked into it and forming a barrier of a sort that would need to somehow be bypassed to strike at the demon. As well, the whispering winds that had afflicted Khaki and Middy now spiraled around new targets. A voice that sounded oddly like Neque's spoke to Gormaric, as the infernal buzzing he had experience in the previous realm returned. "Your sins plague them. Deep down, you know this place is born of the memories you carry. Yours, the Shadow King's, Remissio's. You grow more confident in this truth you more you see here." Around the same time, Dan would hear a familiar but hard to place voice in the back of his own mind. "Why wait for him to act further? He's just going to throw the rest of his minions out before going into the fight himself."

As the winds acted, Noleron's arm extended, and the infernal entity extended his will over the landscape once more. The earth trembled, the ground ruptured, and a pedestal arose next to the renegade paladin Remissio. Atop it... a silvery, spherical object. One that Fidelitas and Gormaric, at least, would recognize as the explosive that had killed Diligence and notably wounded Remissio. The windy demon looked toward the latter with a crooked grin.

"Remissio! Bring that here, and we shall put an end to this farce!"

"... No. I don't think I will."

Noleron's composure was visibly shaken.

"Fine then! Stand there and rot, for all I care! Being directly born from your own memories carried by that ebon-clad knight gives you no right to be so uppity!"

Noleron

HP: 18/20
Passives:
- Maddening Gale: Two randomly chosen targets receive -2 Sanity for the duration of the round. After the round ends, -1 to sanity is inflicted. (Round 2 Targets: Gormaric and Dan @HollowCipher. Numbering is based off order in this post1 and 2 were rolled on a d10.)

- Counter-Manipulation: Noleron will prioritize dealing with manipulations to the landscape of this realm over other possible actions.
Actions (4 per turn):
- Infernal Bolt- A bolt of infernal energy dealing -1 HP. The lingering energy will inflict a further -1 HP if the target takes further HP or Sanity damage in the round, but the energy can be healed away before it activates.

- Manipulate- Same as the realm action. The Boons and Banes are still considered for Noleron as they are for the other characters, as in boons are boons for the heroes.

- Maelstrom Barrier- Lasts for three attacks. Each of these now require a d6 roll, with a 4, 5, or 6 hitting as normal. 3 or below results in the attack being avoided and countered with a -1 HP, -1 Sanity blow.

Actions Taken (2/4):

Maelstrom Barrier

Manipulate (d20 = 17; Major Boon. Explosive Device is now in play, final realm action revealed!)

Realm-Specific Actions-

Quote

Manipulate- Well, this an interesting one! If you take this action, roll a d20 and share with me the result. That will determine how the landscape of this realm will shift. It could be beneficial to the group. It could be detrimental. You never know! Major Bane on a 1-5; Minor Bane on a 6-10; Minor Boon on a 11-15, and Major Boon on a 16-20.

Calm- When you take the Meditate action, roll a d2. If you roll a 2, recover an extra +1 Sanity.

Prime/Detonate- If your character gets a hold of the explosive device, they must first prime it with an action, then take a second action to detonate it. This doesn't have to occur on the same turn. I will immediately quickly post to describe to the result if the detonate action is taken.

Ingel, having been the only one of the initial wave to survive the fierce counter-attack from the adventurers, looked around for another target to engage. The shadowy goop dripped away to reveal the living and lightly wounded paladin beneath the Twistling facade as he looked around. Finally, his gaze settled on Sera, and pushing aside anybody who stood in his way, lunged at her with a well-aimed thrust from his blade.

Quote

Ingel

HP: 5/6
Actions (1 per turn):
- Sword Thrust: -1 HP

Passive:
- Shield: Blocks first (non-area) attack each round. Chance of blocking further attacks with a 3 on a d3.

Actions Taken:

Sword Thrust- (Target: Sera @Zashiii, -1 HP)

Videntia and Volentia crossed the burning ground and the decently-sized chasm that had formed around them to move closer to the group. The two female paladins scanned the group, but didn't take any action against them at the moment, having just expended their effort on moving across the hazardous terrain. Or maybe that was just a flimsy justification for a 'turn' or 'round' mechanic limited by 'actions' in which the one each allotted to the duo were used arbitrarily in crossing the terrain caused by the results of repeated uses of the 'manipulate' action. ... But that would just be silly, wouldn't it?

Enemy- Videntia, the Seer

Quote

HP: 5/6
Actions (1 per turn):
- Spear Thrust: -1 HP

Passive:
- Farsight: Avoids first (non-area) attack each round, and retaliates with a -1 HP attack. Chance of avoiding further attacks with a 3 on a d3, and will land further counter-attacks with a 4 on a d4.

Actions Taken:

Moved

Enemy- Volentia, the Healer

Quote

HP: 5/6
Actions (1 per turn):
- Mend: +1 HP to self and ally.

Passive:
- Fortify: +1 HP to up to 5 targets, can target self. Can only be activated with a 3 on a d3.

Actions Taken:

The foul wind of their enemy buffeted Sheryl, and she leapt back upon invisible platforms in the air.

She could see their foe clearly now, as well as the barrier Noleron seemed to employ in his defense. So the demonic entity sought to buy himself some time or measure of protection. Hopefully the barrier did not extend to his creations, the poor imitations of the White Hand knights. Casting her gaze across the battlefield, she singled outed the duo copies of Volentia and Videntia. Bringing her hands up again, she yelled to the others even as she cast her cyclone once more.

"Destroy Volentia! The healer! Destroy her copy!"

It was among the oldest stratagems of battle. Defeat the enemy supporting units first.

Fidelitas

Fidelitas breathed out when he saw Chastity drop. He took the nod from the elderly paladin as an acknowledgement of the righteousness of his actions. Whether illusion or otherwise, Chastity's approval dispelled some of Fidelitas' uncertainty. The hard winds picked up in intensity, and the air was drawn upwards towards Noleron. Fidelitas shielded his eyes with his elbow, and looked up at him. "You will not win, demon!" He shouted. "Your despicable ways will do nothing against justice."

The rising pedestal nd the accused item atop of it took Fidelitas' attention. The bomb that had taken Diligence's life. Why Noleron would summon it here and now, was a question that had no answers. But in this realm that occurred somewhere between reality and illusion, the explosive could still be a dangerous thing. He started towards Remissio and the bomb, but a voice from above halted him.

"Destroy Volentia! The healer! Destroy her copy!"

The words were jarring to his ears, Sheryl's cry telling them to attack one of the other White Hand paladins. But she was right. Volentia, the youngest of the White Hand, had the strongest gift for healing among them. She could reverse the injuries of the others if she was not downed first. Fidelitas rushed towards Volentia, following behind the wake of Sheryl's cyclone attack. At the last moment before his charge connected, he spied the uncertainty in Volentia's eyes and his sword arm wavered. The other paladin avoided his attack.

Fidelitas took a breath. This is all the demon's conjuration, he reminded himself. If I should lose my conviction here, then I fail my comrades. He grappled with Volentia, using his superior strength and skill to force her to the ground. His sword found the gap between the plates at her hip. Gritting his teeth, he drove his sword into her torso, closing his eyes against the ache in his chest when the young paladin screamed.
