A Glorious Stand (Glorious Beginning Continuation)

"You knew a bulkhead of our force was on that ship. It seems you can't do anything if it has nothing to do with risking fellow lives. Including mine."

He slurred a little as he said 'Including mine'. At this point these words were true. He had made many attacks on areas that were either taken, in battle or had allies with them. Howard wanted to end this here. Ivan was just being self loafing at this point. It seemed like he wished to become the master of the battle in his eyes and maybe others. To Howard he had no sense of strategy. Howard hoped than when he said his final remark he would think of his soldiers actions and his own orders and think better in the future however even Howard knew that this was unlikely for such a risk take on a powerful ally. These actions reminded him of Khan from 404, he knew how to deal with it at this point. Risk and be risked. However is Ivan ruined again, it wouldn't only be Howard aiming a pistol at his head.

And so, Howard turned around and muttered one final word before putting texting Addison that if she sees any rockets she should text him, though she was in combat and putting his phone in his pocket and signalling for the soldiers to follow out the little bastion to their positions.

"If you risk the life of me or an ally again with full knowledge of it. It wont be only me in this side of the room."

He smirked as he walked out the room with his troops following behind. He pretty happy of how he acted in the situation, he had matured and he hoped Ivan would too by listening to a more powerful man who had much wider experience in the game of risk.

However, Ivan was displeased. He had acted with certainty that he would do little damage to friends on the ship, while crippling any hostiles, and if Howard was not going to recognize the fact he had planned everything correctly, and pin the losses of his own men on Ivan rather than Masuda and EXPECT him to stand down, he was very incorrect. In fact, by not showing understanding and promising that there would be justice for Masuda's acts against the certain plan, he had made Ivan believe he was there to serve only his friends' interests. And he was not accepting Howard's commands. For all he knew, he was not his dad, or superior. He knew who he was answering to, and Howard was NOT that person. Besides, Ivan was perfectly willing to come to blows with him, as Howard was clearly not impartial.

Turning to one of the other men, he said:

'Alright, I want you to block all paths to our current position. If they are not going to understand us with words, then they will understand us with fire. At this point, I am not going to bear the blame for the loss of our pilots. You know it was not my fault, but that shithead's fault, for detonating the explosives prematurely. Also, I hereby declare a Free Command order...do as you please, I have no specific command for you. Might as well be my last order, considering I still cannot bear the loss of pilots, even if I wish for revenge upon this...person. No, a Monster. However, if there is one thing about my order, it is that you never give in to any more demands from this damned Admiral. We are not his subordinates, and we are capable of fighting his band of men, and then some. Lastly, I want to see this person that detonated the missiles taken away, dead or alive.'

Then, in silence, the men began to make cover and prepare for a confrontation, preparing dugouts and other defensive structures, and the intention was clear: Ivan did not accept Howard's demands, and was not going to listen if Howard was to blame only him and not his 'friend' for the disaster that said friend had caused by defying the plan. Also, the armour nearby was alerted of Ivan's intentions, and they promptly switched positions, and the Insurgents' Bastion had moved a bit closer to the rear. This positioning made it look like as if Ivan was no longer concerned about the pirates, but with Howard and his unit. And rightfully so, as clearly Ivan had nothing to fire at without 'risking others', and it would be better to face Howard, who might strike, than some pirates who were too busy to even consider it.

Masuda's maneuver, as overblown as it was, did in fact save the lives of Addison, Thurgood, Natalya, Mel, and possibly that of the armored juggernaut as well. With the Gorgon distracted, and the original anti-air defenses aboard the ships spent or otherwise preoccupied, only one vessel might've served in the defense of the Red Royal against such artillery strike. Had the Red Royal been targeted with the full barrage, it would have been destroyed, with any attempts to capture the Gorgon or the Crimson Wake wasted, and all the treasure aboard destroyed as well and sunk beneath the waves.

As well, Ivan might want to reconsider his statements about knowing what he was doing and the innocence of his pilots. If the ordinance they had fired was precision and would've led to very little collateral damage, then it took only sheer stupidity to have flown right back into their pinpoint path when they were redirected and destroyed by the ninja's efforts.

---

The hull of the ship under Mel shuddered. She would be able to feel, and hear rapid thundering vibrations coming her way.

In the next few seconds, a giant monstrosity of a man came crashing through the weakened hull of the ship coming straight at her.

maxresdefault.jpg

Moving with a speed that belied his bulk, the Crimson Wake himself joined the fight. He was the Captain of the ship, leader of the pirate tithe fleet, not the Gorgon. Weighing more then five men put together and with a maw of razor sharp teeth, he was among the most mutant of the ship's crew, an amalgam of shark and man from the depths of any sailor's nightmares. With overwhelming power, he would seek to bite into Mel, shake her about like a rag doll, and then throw her overboard.

---

The Gorgon was alerted to the grenade mere moments before Thurgood managed to get it off, thanks to one of her men screaming a warning. She dove for cover just in time, but still took a wound due to the blast. Hurt and furious that these assailants had managed to get so close, she stumbled away to regroup while barking orders for the rest of the crew still standing to bar their path.

Addison's eyes darted between the retreating Gorgon and the colossal shark which assailed Mel. The choice as to which was the greater threat was clear.

Rising from the shattered floorboards, Addison marched ahead through concentrated gunfire, her shield absorbing a vast majority of the hits. Cracking her knuckles with vicious intent, she began a forward approach on the Crimson Wake's blind right flank as it bore down onto Mel. The ground beneath them seemed precariously insufficient to hold the weight of two heavy combatants clashing, not to mention several dozen pirates a few uncouth mercenaries. This battle would not be determined by raw strength alone. One had to master the art of balance and control to gain the upper hand over their adversary.

As for the Gorgon, Addison only hoped that Thurgood would have the means to subdue her. As explosions rocketed overhead, she could only begin to wonder as to what tomfuckery was occurring in the sky. It only then occurred to her that Masuda was nowhere to be found. That lazy brat. She would speak to him after this was all over.

Meanwhile, Ivan was sitting idle. While he wanted to fight, he was also uncertain whether or not we wanted to actively engage Howard, not because he couldn't be beaten, but because it would be a hassle.

As he was sitting, he got an idea. Turning to Milenic, he said:

'Can you fetch me an attack boat and a Combat Jetpack Suit, along with an AK47, and perhaps an RPG from the spares? I believe there is something we can do.'

Milenic, surprised, began doing what Ivan requested of him.

Mel felt the attack coming, saw the bowing of the bulkhead as the Crimson Wake launched his attack; even so, the form and ferocity of her opponent took her completely by surprise.

"Oh. Well hello there!" was the wittiest thing she could think of to say as the shark-man's huge teeth tore into her. The Crimson Wake gave a mighty shake of his head, but Mel's lightning defense just happened, by sheer chance, to offer some degree of protection from this assault as well. The copper mesh Faraday Cage she'd constructed just under her skin kept the pirate captain from getting a solid grip; even as his powerful jaws tore it apart, it gave Mel time to slough off her outer layer of flesh and escape further embarrassment.

It was bloody, and gross, and as Mel backed up she grimaced at the quivering blob of raw calamari left on the deck.

"Before you try to eat me, you could at least BUY ME DINNER!" she shouted, lashing out with five of her remaining tentacles; two attempted to bludgeon the Crimson Wake while the other three sought to entangle his legs and arm.

A large metal clad hand clasped against the edge of the boat, its grip strong. Slowly the shadow of the Reaver stretched across the deck as it rose from the edge, blood dripping from the right side of its body. There seemed to be bits of boat and metal dug into its muscle which caused the bleeding. The heavy steel footsteps slammed on the boat floor, the Reaver was infuriated. The eyes of a hunter gazed at the chaos on deck, but tunnel vision focused on one target, the biggest one on the boat to be sure. A low growl was produced by the beast of a man as it grabbed its broken front chest plate and ripped it off, the metal in its skin along with it. The large steel plate caused a loud bang on the floor. With rage and blood lust, the Reaver released a loud roar, a call of challenge to the shark beast in front of it. During this call for action, it beat his hands against its chest, a gleam shining off of the dark brown chest from sea water, blood, and sweat. None could say the Reaver was not a strong creature. Its chest was muscular, very muscular indeed.

With the call for a fight out, the Reaver grabbed its spear from the still armored back and produced stance of close quartered combat, making itself wide and ready to wrestle the beast to the ground. All of these pirates and mutants were weak prey for the experienced hunter, but this, this beast would finally be worthy prey. It would have its head on the wall, a trophy for an eternity. All other fighting on this frigate was pointless when compared to the prize that this beast would make. It was time for the real fight to begin.

"Dinner brought itself to me" he growled, clearly referring to his retreating prey.

He was an extraordinarily witty chap really. Mel might've liked him in another world, as he was a stern, highly capable man of the sea, very smart despite not being well learned, with a good sense of humor. And besides, he was a shark, Mel was calamari, and oh there he goes on the move again, with a speed and fury that could only be described as:

Oh LAWD, he truckkin'!

When the lesser crew of the ship were looking nervous and were backing away, it was because they didn't want to get in the mutant captain's way when he showed up.

The Crimson Wake chased after Mel like a fat man on a jelly donut, which to be fair, she probably was to him. Electroreceptors in his flesh, courtesy of his Carcharodon heritage detected Addison flanking him, and farther behind her the presence of another imposing fighter closing in, but first he had to deal with the one who dared to call him out on his ship. As Mel attacked him with his remaining tentacles, he chomped down on two of them in his jaws, and grappled with the others. As strong as she was, it was highly likely he was stronger still, and although Mel managed to occupy his limbs, it was a simple matter for him to flex and snap his arms, cracking the limber octopus lady at Addison as if she was a living whip

Within the Trenches, Ryder Hawk sat with his men as they readied to carry out their orders. With cover from his allies, and enemy forces distracted, it was finally time to act. From their position, three ships were visible to the Field Marshal.

"Focus on that one!" Hawk shouted as he pointed his revolver to the most damaged ship know by the enemy as, "The Red Royal."

At their generals command, his men slowly rotated the harpoon cannons they were provided with until they were facing the ship.

"On my signal, prepare to latch." The Marshal added as he took position alongside his Bloodlust and Atlesian brothers.

"Fire!" He called out before all thirty of their tethered harpoons bolts were sent hurdling into the ship and embedding themselves deep into the wooden hull.

Affirming Hawk’s decision to launch their ambush on the pirates’ flagship, Cochrane looked for ways in which he could support their assault.

His eyes immediately locked into the two other pirate ships, contemplating what their next move would be if Hawk was able to bring the ship in to shore. Would the pirates turn on their own vessel to prevent it from being taken? It was a horrific thought, but not one that was to be ruled out.

Men, suppressing fire!” he shouted, giving several more hand signals to indicate the targets before standing up himself and aiming his flintlock.

In one cohesive stand, the entire row stood up, half of the men aiming at the Blackpool and the other half at the Unbridled. With a resounding roar of gunfire, another wave of suppressing bullets was unleashed to hinder any response from the two ships, before the men ducked back into cover to reload.

Mel grimaced as more of her precious mass ended up in rubbery piles on the deck. She was more concerned about how costly this attack was becoming than the fact that her head was rapidly gaining some serious angular momentum. She was going to have to go on a helluva bender after this; maybe two.

"Hey, stop me if you've heard this one!" she called out, hoping her allies were quick enough to get right the hell out of the way; there wasn't much she could do about that part, Lady Physics being the cold, cast-iron bitch that she was. "How do you tell the difference between a succubus and an incubus?"

She didn't give him time to guess; she answered her own riddle with a stream of boiling, sticky, hyper-pressurized ink from what one would presume to be her nether parts, aimed at the Crimson Wake's nose and eyes.

At the same time, she released her grip on his limbs and her slippery tentacles squeaked out of his grasp. With an enthusiastic shout of "Yeet!", Mel flew through the air and crashed head-first against one of the surviving bulkheads. She dropped onto the deck with an intentionally-audible squishing sound and her squid-matron form coalesced back into to the form of boring old human Melissande LeBlanc.

Mel fell to one knee, panting, wrapping her arms around her midsection as if she was suffering from severe abdominal pain. A carefully-practiced look of horror flashed briefly over her face. "Oh, fuck," she muttered softly. "The magic has worn off."

Changing forms mid rush, Addison opted for a high velocity slide, minimizing her horizontal surface area while skidding ahead in a controlled drag, balancing on half of her back, and the length of her right leg. Her body was prone on the ground with her legs stretched towards the Crimson Wake, her armor making loud scraping sounds as it dragged against the ground, before she lunged upwards seconds after Mel had passed her for the final time, entering into his personal circle where Mel could no longer be used as an effective whip.

The man was huge, but so were his legs. Drawing White Reflection with practiced speed, she curled her legs in, rotating briefly on the balls of her feet, before abruptly slamming upward into the man's crotch, her head rocketing upward into his large, bulging testicles. Meanwhile, her blade swept in a wide arc, aimed to slash the sharkman across his beefy thighs, tearing capillaries which would ultimately wear him down across the course of the battle.

The instant before Mel's boiling jets of ink made contact, the Wake's eyes rolled back in their sockets. Sharks were known to do that as a protective measure against close threats to guard their vision and senses. Combined with his other natural senses, he had complete knowledge of the knightess closing in, even as he shook his head in irritation. He held firm and readied to counterattack.

Addison would find her head rebounding off with an extraordinarily painful clanging noise. If she had the presence of mind to think after that, she would realize that she managed to headbutt a large metal codpiece under the Crimson Wake's clothing.

As it was, any presence of mind would be better served as the pirate warlord growled in pain at the sword slash, and clamped down on the woman before him with both meaty arms, grabbing her by the shoulders and pinning her arms to the side. His headbutt would be far more lethal in return, as it was lined with dozens of large jagged teeth, but instead he would hurl Addison into the enemy juggernaut that would be right ontop of him by now.

---

Most attacks made against all the ships from the land fell short, inadequate due to the distance, especially the harpoons that were launched.

However, the defenders on the mainland would find themselves a boon. The grievously wounded vessel, the Blackpool, would run aground on a small reef some hundred feet off the coast.

There were few direct paths to the beached vessel, and most of the land was covered in shallows and rock pools, but a ground assault was possible. The air around the ship filled with the alarm of stranded pirates, and it was apparent that despite the damage it had taken, they were still ready to fight, and they were bringing some of the damaged weapon systems back online. It was as a small fortress out in the shallows.

The Reaver would bat the flying projectile to the side with the back of his hand during his charge toward the predator. The large heart within the beast pounded as adrenaline rushed into its system, the heat of battle causing its body to go into overdrive. The metal covered footsteps were loud and crashing while it charged the creature, like loud cannon fire with each step. When the Reaver was within range it leaped into the air, spear in a stabbing motion as it aimed to drive the spike metal rod directly into the beasts eye. If it were to lodge itself correctly, the Reaver would use this new handle of leverage over the beast's head to drive its head toward the boat's floor.

Being an eight foot tall behemoth of a man, the Reaver usually kept a low heart beat when out of combat and when engaged in small fights. On the ship however, its eyes were blood shot, its veins showing the mass pumping of blood, and its muscles tensing to the point it would seem that they were bursting from the skin that bound them. Rage and blood lust clouded the mind of the beast that brought many a man fear to just be in the presence of. Although it was a mission to capture this Red Wake, the Reaver could care less. Its mission was to kill and hunt until all opposition was dead, if any ally got in the way, may they have pity on their souls.

Mel watched the others dogpile on the giant shark man and shook her head.

"Goddamnit, he was supposed to close in on his wounded prey and end up getting shanked in the roof of the mouth! Now you've all gone and distracted him. Bah."

She stood up and made a show of dusting her clothes off, throwing a withering glance at a pirate who thought he might have felt his courage rising. "Not. Dealing. With. You," she snarled.

Mel lifted her arm and formed an 8-foot-long trident that looked like it came straight from Poseidon's treasure room. She settled down to wait for a second, watching how the contest between the Crimson Wake and the giant metal death machine played out, keeping a careful eye out for the perfect opportunity to strike.
