Resources, Renewable Energy, and Precious Metals

Recommended Posts

A few months ago Athena had received a report concerning a dozen or so newly discovered precious metal mines in the Northwest portion of Gensaris, located near the edge of the peninsula. Thankfully Aurelium Incorporated's reach had long sense expanded into Genesaris despite it never having reached the same impact as in the Terran and Veluriyam Empires. Up until today, all Athena really had to go on was reports. Sure there had been videos, pictures, sound recordings, text, but nothing really gave the same impact as seeing it for one's self.

Standing atop the floating island of Aurelium, Athena glanced up at the now setting sun. It wasn't yet at the horizon but it was edging toward it. Give it another couple of hours and dusk would be obvious. Not that it matter in the end. Sun or not, her work wouldn't be interrupted by something as inadequate as nature. Finally, the island halted and Dr. Stephens called out to her that they were ready to disembark. To go give her a "tour" of the mines, as he called it.

Athena nodded and moved toward the shute. "I'm ready; do it," she ordered and Stephens complied. He typed in what she knew to be the access code and the floor under her feet disappeared, retracting into the floor around her. However, instead of falling she simply began to descend down as if on an invisible elevator. After a few minutes she landed, her feet touching down on the soft ground of Genesaris.

"This way Director Romanov," Dr. Davids said, motioning her in the direction of a cave. Athena noticed the researchers overgrown beard, the tired look in his eyes accompanied with the dark bags under them. His clothes were dirty; worn to the point it was difficult to determine what color they once were. At first it looked like it was dirt, but after a second more Athena realized it was from some sort of combustible material.

Gesturing to his clothes and overall appearance as they and eight others tracked to the mine, Athena couldn't help but to ask, "What the fuck happened to you?"

Davids laughed but his cheeks took on a slight blush. It was likely he'd gone a while without a woman's touch. "We've been trying to finalize the A01 Battery like you asked but we've come across some issues with the core. Even when the battery only absorbs the minimum amount of atmospheric energy, if it doesn't actually use that energy consistently it over heats and-"

"Exploded," Athena finished.

"Yes, Ma'am," Davids responded sheepishly. "We've attempted to add in a sort of "stop" sensor that tells the battery when to cease absorption, but since it's no longer using or recycling the energy, the molecular chains lose their stability and simply-"

"Leads to another explosion. I'd guess even bigger than just letting it overheat." Davids nodded. She tapped her chin; thinking. It wasn't a problem that she was particularly unfamiliar with as it had been mentioned in the earlier reports, though not as an issue. Other than only allowing the A01 Battery to be implemented within machines that never turned off would theoretically work, but would also likely lead to annoying law suits and a huge amount of lost potential earnings. "Well, we can get back to that in a minute. Tell me about the Glasium Madrite stone."

At that Davids smiled, the weariness seeming to drift from his eyes. "It's spectacular. Truly. The more a stone is refined, the large amounts of magic energies it can withstand. We're working on the formula for a perfect refinement. Strictly speaking, a perfect refinement should not just absorb the magic energies but completely nullify it. If they were made into, say, handcuffs, then someone's supernatural abilities would be, in essence, locked away. An magic or supernatural person would be without it."

Now that really was fantastic.

Word of new business opportunities had made its way out, through Vito's many links and partnerships. Desiring both further expansion of his small empire and further relations, the raider travelled from Fracture to Genesaris via his airship. Tho a land holding many opportunities, the raider only made the distance for something he'd consider a definite productive use of his time.

"We're entering the main land, reduce speed and begin descent. We'll should be there shortly, I'll begin announcement." Vito ordered his co-pilot.

"Yes, captain." The kobold co-pilot responded.

Grabbing an intercom, Vito began addressing the onboard crew. "Message to all crew and passengers, we've now left Gensaris waters and have entered mainland. We'll shortly be arriving on site, prepare for landing and departure."

Staring out into the landscape, Vito admired view. The sunlight breaking through the untouched clouds was something the raider got to see often, but something about newer lands made it all the better. The warm glow of the setting sun gave the clouds a gentle pink hue, gradually getting fainter in color. A few more minutes passed, the ship neared the coordinates provided. A floating island was the first thing that came into view, letting them know they'd reached their destination. The ship came to a halt, hovering a fair distance out.

"We're required on the ground, beginning decent. Keep eyes on ground to ensure no idiots are sitting under us." Vito ordered, taking control of the airship.

"Yes, captain." His co-pilot grabbed a scope, monitoring the ground for civilians.

The ship lightly shook as it began descending, breaking the cloudline and gradually nearing its landing phase. The ships thrusters shook the ground and flicked debris around, stopping as the Caiman hovered just above the ground. Several legs extended outward and touched ground, finalising the landing process. All noise seized as engines cut, giving clearance for crew to go back to their business.

"That'll be all for now, keep eyes on the cabin whilst I'm out." Vito's co-pilote responded with a simple nod, before beginning system checks. Collecting his gear and organising his guards, Vito made his way through the many levels of his airship to the cargo hold. Once there, he exited and took a moment to enjoy being back on land. Unfortunately, this was short lived. The sun setting signalled the need to meet with his employer, so followed by his kraul guards, Vito made his way to the mines.

As Khan had recently made his way to this world, he was obviously unsure of what his first move should be. So this new opportunity was, in his mind, a chance to enter, and one right infront of his eyes, just waiting for him.

As such, he did not show much care for what it would take to get from his home airfield, Sofia 1st Fleet Airbase, in his home city of Sofia, to the Aurelium Island He braced a grueling journey through space with a fairly sizeable escort fleet. And this was a risk because if he was to be caught in space by pirates, and if they managed to separate the fleets, he could well be stranded for a while there.

But, no such predicament and the crew made their way through space with relative safety, only once threatened by a fuel shortage that was quickly addressed by a complicated fuel carrying process that the BAF and SARSDC, with theirnumerous air and space fleets, and even better- expertise, could pull off with few worries.

As they made their re-entry, they began heading for the floating island. At least it was floating. That would make their landing similar to what they have practiced to do in their own small floating islands full of planes, and they could time their approach, instead of having to prepare for a landing that could be risky as they would have picked up unnecessary velocity.

As the fleet that prepared for landing, consisting of 3 'A-54K Super Spartans', one of which carried Khan and a pre-made large room for him and his most personal guard units, and the other two carried fuel, armour, paratroopers, regular infantry and other valuable personnel. Those 3 were at the center of the fleet, positioned in a rough triangular fashion, with nobody knowing where the plane Khan was in stood in that. Khan did know, and he knew that in this formation, he was at the back. They all carried the coat of arms of their country and the words: 'People's Republic of Bulgaria'.

Alongside the fleet were 6 'Mi-24 M4 Super Hind Mod. 2's, flying in a rough hexagon formation to cover the 3 Spartans, each carrying an assortment of weapons, as well as a small number of passengers, some soldiers and some minor VIPs.

And finally, there were 4 'MiG-29/35 M3 Super Mikoyan Mod. 2's, flying in a square formation and being the outer-most layer, and also carrying an assortment of weapons, as well as the pilot and their co-pilot. They, and the Hinds, bore the insignias of the BAF, those being the Black Cross on the white background, and the Red Star with the white, green and red circle inside.

Then, Khan, from his special room that doubled as a conference center, on their intercom, announced to the entire fleet that had come with him to guarantee his safety:

'Men, we are about to begin preparations for landing. Remember to behave like you are expected to in this area, because this is foreign territory a considerable distance away from our homeland. Talk to everyone nicely and be primarily disarmed when you are here. However, remember to always be on standby. We don't know if we are being pursued or tracked by possible enemies. Most notably, those ex-Gallians and Atlesians and their commander, Jack Howard. If this is true, you have any and all rights to prepare for a fight. And finally, remember that we have more people in space that need to land, eventually. Godspeed, comrades.'

Then, the fleet began to land. One by one, over the course of about 20 minutes, the entire escort fleet's airplanes had successfully landed and formed their typical post-landing positioning: the MiG's in the front, the Spartans in the middle, and the Hinds in the back. All ready to fly off immediately if need be.

At last, the crew, the guard, the VIPs, and Khan, who had not been on land for several days as a result of their journey, stepped onto the island. The crew got to maintenance duties, most of the guard formed a tight perimeter around the planes, always on standby, while a few more elite guards, alongside the VIPs and Khan, made their way to the mines.

Once both parties meeting Athena at the mines arrived at the mining entrance, they would be met by a troupe of warriors clad so heavily in armor that not even a centimeter of skin could be shown. Each of them stood at least eight feet tall with pure muscles under the large exterior armor. In battle the toughness of the skin and muscles would prove to be on-par, if not stronger, than the armor they wore.

Aurelium Super Soldiers. Elite guards in both training and physiology that would give their life for the charge if needed. Though none had been required to do so to date.

There were six of them at the entrance awaiting Khan's group and another six awaiting Vito's.

The vanguard super soldier bowed to both groups, his voice coming out just as rough and deep as one might expect from such an imposing figure. "Master Vito. Master Khan. Director Romanov is expecting you both a little deeper in the mines. For the duration of you visit within the mines, the twelve of us will be at your disposal as safety requires."

In the same swift motion to which he stood, the super soldier motioned for the two parties to follow them into mines. Five or so minutes later, the group would spot a group of white coats in the distance. Most of them men, many older than fifty, but at what seemed to be the center was a woman with different colored eyes. Her stern gaze and rather hawk like cheek bones created quite the ominous look.

The woman shrugged away from where she stood toward Vito and Khan. Those around her were her researchers. As she left them, they scurried off back to their computers and areas within the mining zones to put her ideas to the test.

"Welcome, Vito Amsen. Mr. Khan. I expect no real trouble occurred during your voyages to Genesaris, yes?" If either of them answered beyond a polite nod, Athena would nod at their response but not say anything. Her question had been, after all, simple niceties. She turned toward two of the beta test Null Magic stones and tossed each of them one to hold and observe. In their hands were semi-refined Glasium Madrite stones. Dull, empty looking stones that, when totally refined, would become colorless. Clear, like crystal. Then, as it absorbed magic, it would turn black. Theoretically if the refined stone was overloaded it would explode, but her researchers had yet to find a limit to the stone since the focus was on an absolute refinement. If they managed that, there'd be no overload anyways. "That is a Glasium Madrite stone, colloquially called Null Metal or a null magic stone. We haven't managed a complete refinement yet, but currently they are able to withstand an unprecedented amount of magic. If you go ahead and pour your magic into it, you should feel the stone begin to drink and absorb your magic with a great pull."

Upon approaching the door, Vito was met by large armored guards. The twelve guards stood tall, like large stone goliaths ready to strike. The guards bowed, to which Vito and his own guards responded to accordingly. Tho his kobold crew had different methods of greeting, they'd learned enough of other foreign practices on how to be polite. The two parties were ordered to follow, to which Vito's complied.

"I take no issues in that." The raider responded, following closely behind.

It wasn't long till Vito and his men would spot the typical white lab coats, worn by the general demographic that'd be expected to wear them. Stood in the center would be the one they'd come to meet, shrugging away the scientist who'd quickly returned to their duties.

"Good, thank you." He'd give a quick response, wanting to see what she'd have in store. As he'd hoped, she'd done so without fooling around first. Tossing each guest a stone, of which Vito could immediately tell the nature of.

Vito would do as she instructed, focusing his energy through his palm and onto the stone. Despite being aimed upwards with significant force, he could feel the magic simply shift it and be quickly absorbed. The stone seemed to darken, becoming somewhat onyx like. It was not unseen by the raider, but far greater than what'd come before. The Glasium Madrite would also appear aesthetically appealing, something that'd be obvious, as his guards eyed the stone with glee.

"Impressive, far more effective than most null magic materials I've seen in the past. My kobolds would agree. I'm curious to know, how does this stand up to magic elements? Fire, water, etc. If I target it with it say, cosmic fire, would it respond the same way?" Vito would wait for a response before continuing with questions.

Khan followed Vito into the mines, and as usual, he replied:

'Thank you, and only some problems during my trip. mostly worries about space pirates and unintended fuel shortages, both quickly rectified.'

Then, Khan saw the stone and focused energy through his palm as well, in a small beam. The pull of the stone towards the energy was so strong, he could feel the beam being absorbed into the null stone.

'Oh my, this is....impressive, actually. There are few things I can compare to this. Stunning work, so far. I was going to ask the same as Vito, but how does it handle regular, non-magical energy? Does it perform like regular steel, or exhibit some other quality we are not aware of?'

Taking a third stone from the inventory, Athena nodded in the direction of her guests and tossed the stone into the air. When the Glasium Madrite stone reached its apex, a burst of fire erupted from Athena's open hand and crashed into it. Although the fire pushed the stone further away where it banged into the mine walls before rolling around on the floor until an assistant researcher fetched it, there was not a scratch on it. In fact, it had seemingly managed to absorb some magic. As the assistant placed it back into her opened hand, she smiled and looked at her guests again.

"As you can see, because the magic was elemental based, the stone wasn't able to absorb the element itself. It would be a similar result if you used magic to hit it with earth or water or any type of element. However," Athena raised the stone and placed it between her index and thumb so Khan and Vito could see it better, "what happened is that it absorbed the controlling magic. Whatever parts of the fire touched the Madrite stone instantly lost the magic which had been controlling it. Now, if you try to use elemental magic while holding the stone, nothing will happen; the same as when you poured magic into it. Unfortunately this means that the stone has no defense against natural forces and energies such as gravity. So if someone uses magic to launch a boulder at you, I wouldn't recommend defending with Madrite." She paused for a moment. "Well, not unless it was a very thick wall of Madrite. It's strength is substantial and not easily broken. A non-magic device as strong or stronger than a crystal drill could do it, though. It's how we've been shaping it."

To demonstrate what she meant, Athena led them over to an array of carved Madrite stones. The shapes varied from sword blades to jewel like beads to handcuffs.

Turning to Khan specifically, she shook her head. "If you're referring to whether it's a conduit, I'm afraid not. And although theoretically it could replace steel, the melting point needed in order to massively reshape Madrite is astronomical. While a diamond's melting point is 4,027° Celsius, Madrite would be at least five times that. That's almost twice the heat of the sun. Even if it's theoretically possible, I haven't found a source of heat powerful enough to fully melt it yet, so we've been simply cutting and carving from larger slabs."

Turning over the stone she'd been showing them again, she eyed it curiously. "Some of my researchers have also claimed to have witnessed circumstances in which the stone releases the magic it has absorbed, like a sort of magic battery. This would give it tremendous military value. There's still, however, much work to be down in that area. We've been valuing progress on the A01 Battery more than turning Madrite into a battery since A01 will have more practical uses."

Vito watched as the second demonstration took place, followed by an explanation. She then lead the two to a table of items created from madrite stone, various items of uses and craftsmanship. The raider took particular interest in the handcuffs, whilst his guards eyed the beads. He pondered the various uses and crafting methods, before turning back to Athena.

"Hmm, I'm interest in its capabilities against magic users, particularly with the difficulty of the more advanced ones. Madrite dust may also prove useful in various circumstances, tho potentially lethal. But military capabilities aside, was cold forging any good with the processing?" After hearing the answer, Vito would proceed on with the purpose of his visit.

"So, this is what you need assistance mining? Where do we begin?" Vito kept it simple and to the point, awaiting instructions.

Khan, who had his question kind of answered, pressed a bit more.

'I meant if it was something more resilient than regular steel. Can it take a bigger punishment from say, an assault rifle, or perhaps Anti-tank missile launcher?' Though yes, knowing it's melting point is that high is always nice to know and it might mean it is a bit more resilient than I thought, and as someone who is extremely heavy into military affairs and aggressive military intervention and reclaimation, see the value of this for military purposes, especially if it can null AND absorb magic. Perhaps...perhaps... Khan drifted off briefly, barely noticeable by anyone else.

As he came back though, he said.

'I can see why you prioritized the A01 research though. It is probably easier to make progress on, considering that melting value of Madrite. While theoretically exerting that much energy is possible, I can imagine the difficulty in actually achieving it. I wish I could fix that, but trying so soon would be pretty. damn. pointless. So...yeah. I would need a plasma-based cutter retrofited for reforming to actually achieve that. Possible, but requires extensive preparation on my side, at the very least.'

Athena clicked her tongue. "Unfortunately cold forging was useless as well. At a certain point the die began to crack. But it's not a problem, as we've only just started the process. I estimate in six months or so my researchers will find a way to better mold the Madrite." As she thought over his other remark, there was a slight silence filled only by the dulled workings of researchers and scientists deeper in the mind, punctured by the occasional crack of a miner hard at work. "Madrite dust is... effective, yes, but it's proven to be rather unpredictable. The first time we tried it, the dust broke down into such small pieces that it fused onto standard molecules like oxygen and hydrogen. One of our researchers' hazmat suits was somehow penetrated and he nearly died. What the Madrite dust did once it entered his lungs was essentially absorb every inch of magic from within him. Since most of us have our magic connected in someway to our life force..." she shrugged and trailed off since the answer was obvious. Inhaling a large amount of Madrite dust was suck up all energy until you died. "Why it operates so differently as dust, we don't know yet. The condition is too unstable and dangerous to experiment at the moment. We're creating better conditions within the Aurelium labs. Only a week or so left."

"It depends on the quality of the Madrite," Athena explained. "If it was improperly refined, then no. While strong under magic forces, it will shatter under approximately 300 pounds of force. However, as we approach perfect refinement, the durability of the Madrite is increasing exponentially. Although we aren't sure, I theorize that a perfect refinement will make it stronger than steel and harder than diamond." She walked over to the table against and held up a small sphere-cut madrite stone. "Imagine a bullet that pierces through near anything. That not even a psionic shield or a thick steel wall could stop." Her words, though perhaps suggesting the military potential, were more directed at her simply intrigue in such a possibility.

"Yes," she answered, "this is what we'll be mining. I've called both of you here for assistance in mining the actual material and testing its capabilities. I assume that both of you have brought along your own researchers and miners, or have some on hand nearby? We'll begin working on this as soon as your people can arrive."

Vito was disappointed to hear about the limited method of processing such a valuable material, but was not overly concerned. Everything had its ups and downs, appearing as this material potential was more than worth the processing hassle. The combat side of the material was only a secondary concern, but one that nonetheless be useful for future battles. With the kobold eager to get moving, things could begin.

"We've brought all mining and research equipment needed, it's all aboard the ship. The kobold will mine the material twice as fast and with nearly no casualties than any other race, if only you could see the mines back home. With permission, I'll bring the ship closer to the entrance and we'll begin whenever you are ready. As for research, I'll be doing that aboard the ship with my shamans."

Athena nodded and beckoned forward a few of the research attendants. "Make yourself at home. My assistants will provide you with the necessary paperwork and temporary licenses will be distributed to both your organizations so nearby governments to bother you here."

Although Aurelium wasn't a public powerhouse, they had at least one finger in many, many pies. And, because of that, so long as they stayed in their own area and acted as if they followed the regions legal procedures (which they mostly did, short of some bribery to speed the process up here and there), governments left them alone. After all if you pissed off one of, if not they largest manufacturer and distributor of new technologies and weapons, your state's economy could suddenly take a turn for the worse.

Summary: Director Romanov of Aurelium Incorporated establishes an operation trade exchange with Eli Amson, leader and Vito of a mysterious organization suspected of drug trafficking, and the newly arrived People's Republic of Bulgaria led by Khan. After showing and discussing two of Aurelium's newest discoveries, the A-01 Atmospheric Battery and Glasium Madrite, an anti-magic stone, the sides agreed on the trade terms. The People's Republic and Vito's organization will be given access to the Glasium Madrite stones in order to study them on their own and will be kept up to date on Aurelium's advancement of the resource. In exchange, Aurelium will receive monetary payments for the access to and ownership of refined Glasium Madrite stones, updates on the other organization's research on the stones, and will be given increased manpower in mining the raw Glasium Madrite materials. Aurelium maintains rights to the Glasium Madrite mines, but the trade gives the other parties access to the mines and ownership of individual blocks of Madrite for their own personal use.

Minor Summary: Athena Romanov demonstrates and discusses the anti-magic stone known as Glasium Madrite and the A-01 Atmospheric Battery with Vito, the leader of a mysterious organization, and Khan, the spokesperson of the People's Republic of Bulgaria. The three parties come to an agreement and negotiation out a contracts for access and manufacturing rights.

Opportunities: Glasium Madrite is officially available to purchase or obtain from any of the participating parties, Aurelium's inventions are once again making its name known which makes their position known to the public as well, Glasium Madrite can be adapted for military purposes

Consequences: A dangerous material hits the market, the fight against powerful magic has taken a turn for the better, prisons made from Glasium Madrite will be near impenetrable.
